The new Harry Potter show is upon us, and while there's debate as to how much JK Rowling is involved in the running of the show, the fact remains: it's her IP. It makes money, she makes money.

If you watch it, if you buy HP merch, if you visit the HP park attractions, if you make others curious to watch it, etc., you are funding this TERF's persecution of trans people.

So, don't.

J.K. Rowling uses personal wealth to fund anti-trans org

This is where "Harry Potter" profits are going.

@herhandsmyhands

Yup. You cannot separate the art from the artist if the artist is using the art to fund hatred and bigotry.

If you care about queer people, avoid anything that Rowling profits from.

@FediThing @herhandsmyhands

And "separate the art from the artist" isn't even ABOUT ignoring horrible shit the artist did or continues to do. It's not an excuse to consume their media anyway.

@herhandsmyhands Didn't you advertise a UK-based theatre production (by a royal knight no less) in your very last post before this, therefore funnelling money directly into one of the most transphobic European countries' tourism coffers?

The critique of personal consumption is ridiculous. Every purchase you make of anything tangentially contributes to awful things. Push for JKR to be arrested or something actually tangible instead of taking random people's fandoms away.

@herhandsmyhands Its what Hermione would do. ✊️
@herhandsmyhands
What should I feel about my granddaughters applying to be extras in the school scenes?

@pthane Given you have grandkids, you probably know how you feel and why about most anything.

In the off chance this is a good faith question, here's my answer:

A good friend doesn't let a friend date a Nazi; a good grandparent doesn't let their grandchildren go into supporting a TERF uninformed. Whatever happens after they know, it's their decision.

@herhandsmyhands
Older one is 14 and might understand the issues. The younger (9) not so much. But even at my age it's not simple. There's a long history of unpleasant people making great art, or even mediocre movies. There's a lot of heat and not much understanding on all sides of sex/gender issues. Rowling has her opinion and a right to campaign for it. I don't agree, I guess you don't either and we have a right to protest but Rowling is the wrong
target. The recent court decision was about clarifying what parliament intended when it passed the law. Those who feel it's wrong need to campaign to change the law. Attacking those who support the law as it stands isn't going to change anything. And do we really want to stop kids having a blast on a film set?
@herhandsmyhands
@pthane @herhandsmyhands
So not a good faith question, then.
@justanotheramy
We'll yes it was really. Is my view as expressed above acceptable or as they say on some forums, AITA? Life is baffling at times.
@herhandsmyhands
@herhandsmyhands @pthane
It’s only a good faith question if you haven’t already predetermined the answer you’re willing to accept.
At your big age you should know that.
Your essay in response to the answer you solicited showed that to very much not be the case.
@herhandsmyhands @pthane
Presumabably your grandchildren have parents who are old enough to understand the issue, and who are capable of understanding that responsible parenting means you don’t always get to be the fun mum/dad.
Parenting includes helping our young people become ethical and engaged members of society, and that sometimes means putting the rights of others above self gratification.
This is basic stuff β€” or it is if our own parents did it 🀨
@pthane @herhandsmyhands put yourself on a rocket into the sun, thank you!
@pthane @herhandsmyhands Rowling is absolutely the right target. If you've been paying attention to US politics, you would immediately make the connection of how money impacts policy. I can't believe it's that different in the UK

@pthane @herhandsmyhands It's not about her opinion though is it? It's her status as a billionaire that gives her access to the media and the government, and allows her to interfere with people's rights. This was settled law for decades which she has torn up using vast amounts of money almost entirely from Harry Potter.

People with 100 million pound yachts (which she has) seem to get their way a bit more easily than the ordinary people's lives she is ruining and endangering. It's a perversion of democracy to let billionaires play with the lives of human beings just to suit the bigotry of the wealthy.

@pthane @herhandsmyhands When you purchase or promote anything relating to Harry Potter, you are funding her bigoted campaigns. You are making her voice even louder so she can drown out her victims' voices.

That probably isn't the intention in most cases, but that's the effect, and vulnerable people will suffer the consequences.

@pthane @herhandsmyhands "Rowling has her opinion and a right to campaign for it." Oh go fuck yourself

@Ember
"I disagree with what you say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
I don't agree with Rowling but...

There is a separate issue about how the wealthy can use their wealth to influence politics. That's tricky too.
@herhandsmyhands

@pthane defending "to death" nazis ability to say nazi things makes you a fucking nazi

@herhandsmyhands Hot take: The story of Harry Potter is a hash of stolen tropes and bigoted stereotypes, about how people who are Simply Born Better, fighting to restore the unjust status quo so they can grow up to become literal cops and dictators.

Even if (load-bearing "if" right there) most people don't give a tenth of a fuck about trans people and the brazen efforts of this literal fascist to destroy us, there is no artistic or ethical reason to ever financially support this franchise. Period.

If people absolutely must watch this shameless cash grab, they can and should get their asses to The Pirate Bay, and if they have any decency, give the money they'd have spent to trans artists, who are not literal billionaires.

@SymTrkl huge, load bearing "if", indeed.

The original movies have been out ages, anyone who 'grew up with the books" has watched them already and likely owns them, or can probably borrow them from the library.

There's no need to watch this tripe, period.

@SymTrkl @herhandsmyhands I hate the "born this way" trope. As a kid I remember the "I became a hero by reading a book" and "I became a hero by falling then learning" trope. Birthright nonsense is not just anti-trans, it's antisemitic, racist, misogynistic, and a throwback to some very dark times in human history. Anyone trying to justify anything with bloodlines needs a long hard stare.
@herhandsmyhands : yes ! It needs to be reminded that there is no "watching ironically", "just taking a look to see how problematic it is" or "downloading illegally so she doesn't profit directly". These options still boil down to engaging with the content. The mere act of engaging with the franchise, for any other reason than discussing her activism, gives the IP cultural capital. It should be radioactive.
@ladyteruki Yes, exactly; there's no reason to watch this shit that is not well outweighed by the fact that it's very existence is making the TERF money, money that she uses, publicly and abundantly, to destroy lives.
@herhandsmyhands Who even wants a new Harry Potter show? The movies are universally aclaimed. Just a pure money grab, seems like.
@drew @herhandsmyhands JKR wants a new version so that people forget the original actors who loudly disagree with her views

@drew @herhandsmyhands I heard she wants to reinvent the franchise because Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson are basically the three faces of Harry Potter and they all spoke out against her bigotry. So she wants to reinvent the characters as different people.

Not sure how accurate it is but given how Rowling is a petty, spiteful bitch I honestly don't put much past her.

Spores in her brain.

@herhandsmyhands if people pirate it and talk about it, it's free publicity. Same with pirate merch from aliexpress.
@herhandsmyhands Is it just me or do her eyes look deader than usual?
@herhandsmyhands My sincere thanks for getting a couple of now-suspended sealions to whatabout in your mentions. Works every time. Rowling can get fucked.
@futzle @herhandsmyhands It's honestly like clockwork. Post something about JK Rowling. Some dude shows up going "but what did she say that was really that bad?"
@futzle They were suspended? I just blocked them.
@herhandsmyhands I should wish. No, I only meant that my instance has suspended them locally, blocking them for all users here.
@herhandsmyhands
Please don't use 'TERF', this has nothing to do with 'feminism', it is toxic femininity.
@herhandsmyhands There are a lot of decent, but ignorant, people who still support the HP franchise. They need a talkin' to.

@herhandsmyhands

Boycott bigots and companies that are ok with bigots

@herhandsmyhands I'm not a Harry Potter fan, never been. But if you really want to see it, my advise is to 'illegally' download/stream it via torrents and don't talk about it that you watched it.

@herhandsmyhands In North America a transphobe is almost guaranteed to be an extreme social conservative who is also opposed to things like immigration, women's reproductive rights, and DEI, but in the UK, you can somehow get away with calling yourself "progressive", "left", and/or "feminist" and still be a raving transphone.

Something broke badly there.

@herhandsmyhands Yeah, I will pretty much unfollow anyone who puts jk propaganda on my timeline. I don't need that. My trans kid doesn't need that. My trans friends don't need that.

I just wish she would go back to her moldy castle and go sit with her nose real close to the blackened walls. I bet it smells real pretty JK! Try it!

@herhandsmyhands plus it's extremely, extremely mediocre fiction. Children are being sold short if this is the lore they are growing up with. Very bad literature.
@herhandsmyhands Disillusioned HP fans, please check out Little Witch Academia #anime which gives you a similar universe but much more wholesome.
