I’ve had this idea for a very long time. Never did it until yesterday. It’s fucking glorious. It is so so fucking good and it was my idea.

You just take a bunch of phone plugs and unscrew the barrel thing. Plug them into a mixer and patcg with crocodile clips. Suddenly you can do out of phase stuff, use the xlr inputs (just plug the plug bit in), split signals, do the kind of dead short mixing you’re not supposed to do. (Continued)

My mixer was making a bunch of crazy sounds a normal no-input mixer would struggle to do. Not just a clicking with timbre but complex chaotic messy huge thick gnarly stuff.

You can send one signal to the in-phase input and another to the out-of-phase (cold) one. You can send stuff to the xlr and phone inputs at the same time.

I haven’t done this yet but you could also have diodes, capacitors and stuff in between.

Playing with touch also works. It worked really well.

@Max Wainwright That's the beauty of analogue gear: Every Mackie 1204 sounds different. After two years already these formerly hifi eqs start to sound dull, the capacitors wear out quite quickly, however each individually different. That totally qualifies for having 4 of them just to be able to do different no-input settings. It's like using 12 standard SM 57s each for different use cases in recording - just because of technical instability in manufacturing. You never get all this from digital audio. @recording group

@jrp its’s a 1202, but perhaps you’re right. Haven’t compared it to my VLZ4 1202. That has very crap input trimmers at least.

The capacitors in the filters are ceramics and should last ~forever, but will have pretty wide tolerances.

i put up the video: https://youtu.be/ygJS0wLR4-c
it’s still unlisted, wanted to add some sort of video description but I have things I need to do right now.

@maxwainwright
WHOA! That easy. This gives so many possibilities.

@noisio yes it’s incredible. I’ve had this bag of shit jacks for such a long time and have been meaning to do this. It was much much better than i thought.

I filmed some stuff but want to edit it just a bit before i upload.

@maxwainwright hee, hee. My other ed did something along these lines with the mixer section of a tascam 4 track cassette recorder. Patch mania. It sounded like aphex twin being chased down a dark alley wearing tin can shoes and beating a frame drum while screaming. It was great.
@poetaster i believe you are mistaken, this was my idea, no one did this before i did 🙃
@maxwainwright of course this is your thing. Ideas are just smoke. But U built that amazing thing. Now post a recording.

@poetaster i didn’t build it, it’s just a mixer with crocodile cables! But the possibilities are huge.

I shall. But not right now, I’m in bed pretending to be trying to sleep.

@maxwainwright also reminds me of alain wergefosse, a mixer musician from belgium/barcelona. Large mixers cross connected with lots of contact mics and ldrs patched in. He used to take those tablets that emit co2 when wet and put several on mics that were in feedback loops. Then he'd play his beard.
