Are you using Ublock Origin ? Add "google.com##.hdzaWe" without quotes to your Ublock Origin My Filters to block the google AI overview and apply changes.
@nixCraft Or just add "google.com" and never worry about them changing stuff 🙃 (if you still need to fall back on their search there's leta to do that privately)

Do you know if this works on corporate domains with Gemini enabled?

@jwp it blocks google search AI overview crap that is displaced on top of each search query.

For Gemini corporate your Org's admin can enable or disable Gemini per user.

@nixCraft

Just wondering if it would kill all the annoying popups. Appreciate it's not going to save the Data from the AI grey goo; but the amount of distracting and 'getting in the way' popups related to gemini in gsuite is pretty obnoxious

@nixCraft
No need for this if you don’t use Google search engine.
@nixCraft Or, simpler, don't use Google as your search engine.

@1HommeAzerty @nixCraft
I don't but since it's started flipping into brick (they call it "safe" but it bricks EVERY non-factory app) mode every time I restart it & it keeps cutting out the wi-fi unless I restart it so I'm looking for a SIMPLE* way to delete the whole thing without a factory reset

*As I tried to add this word to the draft, the wifi went out AGAIN

@nixCraft
I switched to Qwant. No AI for now...

@nixCraft

Or...

Just use [Kagi.com] for search and forego stupid Google entirely.

🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

@lupus_blackfur @nixCraft I completely agree. I know not everyone can afford another subscription but Kagi is a no brainer and has improved my life. Pro tip: sign up and change your default browser search to Kagi immediately on all your devices. Making it automatic makes switching easy.
@lupus_blackfur @nixCraft I don't want to add an american company to my list of american things I use anymore
@lupus_blackfur @nixCraft kagi were pumping AI crap out sooner than most. It's why I cancelled my subscription!

@nixCraft
For Google searches to get rid of all the extraneous guff in the results, add a new search URL "Google Classic" https://www.google.com/search?udm=14&num=50&q=%s

Similarly "DuckDuckGo Lite" with https://noai.duckduckgo.com/?q=%s

@nixCraft I'll just keep searching on startpage.
@nixCraft Thanks it was really useful
@nixCraft Or just switch to another engine.
@nixCraft o7 thank you for your service
@nixCraft omg, thanks! Extremely useful!
@nixCraft I don't have that issue, I'm using Qwant.
@nixCraft Have we just abandoned UDM14?
How I Made Google’s “Web” View My Default Search

Forget AI. Google just created a version of its search engine free of the extra junk it has added over the past decade-plus. You just need one URL parameter.

Tedium: The Dull Side of the Internet.
@nixCraft Works, thanks!!

Also: the corresponding adblock rule to block AI overview in DuckDuckGo search:

duckduckgo.com##div[data-react-module-id="wikinlp"]

@nixCraft

@BradRubenstein @nixCraft
Duckduckgo generates summary for websites in search results themselves (even for nojs version). Foe example if you search some obscure thing and the first result is its Wikipedia page, the summary is almost always "Learn about xxxx yyyy" but such sentences is no where to be found in the original webpage.
@BradRubenstein @nixCraft Both of these rules (for Google and DuckDuckGo) also work in AdGuard for Safari.
@nixCraft Thanks dude. You're a lifesaver ♥️
&udm=14 | the disenshittification Konami code

A quick way to get an AI-free search without any extra work.

@nixCraft I thought Ublock Origin was dead because the API did no longer work? 🤔

@Bebef

It no longer works in #GoogleChrome, but it works perfectly in #Firefox. Firefox also protects you from tracking in a way #Chrome never will.

@nixCraft

@nixCraft Google? Hehe. I use SearXNG w/ DuckDuckGo.
@nixCraft Now if someone could just provide something like this for those stupid login popups a bunch of sites use... I can't even click on them with uBlock's picker.
@nixCraft This is excellent, although I don't use Google.
@nixCraft
That class name will change (as it is dynamically generated) and the rule will suddenly fail

@zm @nixCraft

yeah it's like the drone wars, if the enemy comes up with better drones we then improve our own

@nixCraft

Qwant.com seems nice.

@nixCraft This only does cosmetic filtering on AI overview, right?
@nixCraft

I don't use Google's search, any more, so blocking its AI overview probably doesn't mean much?
@nixCraft just go ahead and make a plugin for us simple minded people 😂
@nixCraft yeah, only leave the bad people feed ai , gonna work great
@nixCraft
Ou faites comme moi : utilisez DuckDuckGo ou Qwant ....
#FuckGoogle
@nixCraft Or is it simply better to use searchxng

@KevinZ @nixCraft

I'm in camp searchxng. Blocking a url is fragile at best.

@nixCraft

uBlock Origin & Firefox & Ubuntu

How do I get to the filter settings with uBlock Origin
to the filter settings?

In the add ons administration I find uBlock Origin but no possibility to set filters or similar.

@Gehtso @nixCraft Click on the uBlock Origin icon that appears to the right of the address bar. There is a button that looks like a typical settings icon, the text is "Open dashboard". There is a tab for filters.

@GreenSkyOverMe

there is no uBlock Origin icon next to my address bar.
but it is installed and displayed in the add on directory

@Gehtso @GreenSkyOverMe

Use the puzzle piece icon and make this addon appear on the toolbar (pin to toolbar).

@nixCraft Interesting - I'll test this. Although DDG is now my default, I do resort to the big G sometimes when all else fails. At least DDG allows you to turn off all the AI related garbage, and I keep providing Google with some "nice" feedback on their AI overview "results". Sometimes I do get a little angry in my feedback too.
@nixCraft Well, it totally works. Found a search term that generated an AI overview result, added the term and bam! No AI overview! Added bonus for no large empty block either!
@nixCraft Thank you so much for this! It worked for my partner who still refuses to switch from Google.
@nixCraft
For everyone interested in blocking more AI slop to avoid loosing brain time to filter garbage, there's this (still regularly maintained) uBlock Origin block list :

@nixCraft I do use ublock origin. But there is no scenario in which i would ever be confronted with a google AI overview.
