“Autism doesn’t destroy families.
Ignorance does.
Isolation does.
Shame does.
Especially when it comes packaged in a suit with a microphone and a claim to public good.” 👍🏼💪🏼
@mwl I've known a number of people who are on the spectrum and have some familiarity with some of the severe challenges of raising them.
Most are/were not tragedies.
The problem with you, RFK, and your supporters, is lack of understanding. Sure, some people on the spectrum are tragedies, just like some neurotypical people are tragedies. But if you only look at the tragedies, you're misinformed and doing huge harm, both to millions of people as well as to our society and our country.
Right in the feels. Being diagnosed with autism on my sixth year - and mid twenties with ADHD - I reckon both myself and the beloved ones in this letter.
And I am incredibly honored to have a supportive environment while growing up - for the most part. But others don't have that privilege.
As controversial as this might be - the attitude of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. feels like discrimination and a crime against humanity.
Having been there - having experienced what a diagnosis is like - the good, but also the bad and worst sides - we should be supportive of everyone. Especially if they are "different" or fall outside the lines of the system.
I am fortunate enough to be where I am now. Mid-thirties, happy and cherished. And while my youth might have been painful at times - I realize how fortunate I am, coming from a privileged background, having the space to figure out whom I am and to fall on my nose - knowing I'd be caught and given the opportunity to recover and heal.
However - many don't have this privilege. I will gladly offer my voice to them if needed - and take a strong stance against any form of injustice and/or discrimination.
Last one for now: feel free to boost / toot as you see fit. I tooted this publicly on purpose - as I rather rot in jail saving a single person than any other scenario.
@mwl On one hand, this is a perfectly written rebuttal of RFK. On the other hand, RFK himself claimed that would have been probably diagnosed with ADHD by modern standards, the condition he self-medicated for with...wait for it... heroin. He's a charlatan.
edit: added citation given the absurdity...

Thats beautiful 😀
@mwl
No.
Anyone forcing me to read a URL to figure out what the post is about can fuck off
@mwl You remember the line about W: "Born on 3rd base and congratulates himself for hitting a triple"?
RFKjr was born halfway between 3rd base and home plate and then ran backwards along the bases to get thrown out at 1st.
@mwl "The question isn’t whether people like my daughter have something to offer. It’s whether society is finally ready to stop measuring value with the wrong scale." /applause
You could have tone down the request for reading it though, cause I read it prepared to find flaws and use them to insult you.
What can I say, I run through spite :)
@mwl @PE4KH Thank you for pointing out the urgency. At first I thought, ah, Anerican politics, so awful but not my hill to die on (as a European), and any beef someone has with JFK Jr. is most likely well-founded, but I don't need to know the details.
But your sense of urgency got me, and I did read this. I am very glad I did. I didn't know an expression of anger could be so beautiful.
So, to y'all, do read this. You'll be glad you did.
