We should have a memorial day for COVID. It is horrific that we as a society have done virtually nothing to remember the millions who have died. Rushing to forget what happened also makes it much more likely that we will continue to repeat our deadly mistakes.
A memorial day does not mean COVID is over. Far from it. Formally acknowledging the devastation that has happened — and is still ongoing — is critical for continued action. Remember the dead, fight like hell for the living!
@luckytran In the same way that Memorial Day doesn't mean Americans are no longer dying in wars.

@luckytran yeah, some kind of annual recognition sounds like a good idea tbh

I just had an experience last week where a group was *shocked* to discover people are still dying of it. And that's so much more measurable than disability/suffering etc.

@luckytran Agreed. If the U.S. were to hold a national annual Covid memorial day, what date would be most relevant or appropriate?

I can think of a few possibilities:

The date of the first known USian case/death.

Or the date of the emergency order.

Or maybe the date the first vaccines were offered to the public? Something else?

I think of seeing all those hospitals being rapidly built in China early on, and the toll of Covid in Italy...and how we didn't heed their warnings early enough.

@luckytran I agree, but in today's political climate it is likely not going to happen unfortunately.
@luckytran I think we, the international covid-conscious community, should find a date and share it to the world
@luckytran I’m terrified of future outbreaks now that vaccines won’t even be recommended for healthy people going forward.
@luckytran Unfortunately, for those in power it wasn’t by mistake ;:(
@luckytran With vaccinations instead of grilling meat!
@jon_giraffe @luckytran I do not get some holidays in the states.

I highly recommend the posts above. We're not done yet by any means. It keeps evolving so this looks like a good source to help us stay informed. Stay safe.

@luckytran there is in U.K. and across a number of other European nations
@luckytran We are! Trump is president and he is firing people that monitor deadly diseases. Also canceling studies and so much more.
@luckytran March is international Long COVID Awareness month, and March 15th is the International Long COVID Awareness Day. A group I’m a part of as a caregiver for a LH spouse, C19 Longhauler Advocacy Project recently did a week of activities and events to remember the sufferers. Take a look at the website here:

@luckytran @Krosen_nw Imagine if they had treated the 1918-19 Spanish flu pandemic like they have COVID. I’d suspect the population would have been cut in half over time.
@luckytran
I’ve been asking about this since 2021. We (globally) lost MILLIONS of people who are never collectively mentioned.

@luckytran

Do a poll, we pick a date. Then we discuss what the event could include so that it is meaningful to participate.

The only cultures worth anything are the ones we build together.

@luckytran

I thank you for your post - I want, on this Memorial Day. to remember a friend...Russ Stang. He fell to Covid in the early days of the pandemic. Well, actually he didn't fall in the early days, he was infected early but it took him a full year to finally pass because he was the most virile, capable strong man I have ever known. The virus that took this giant from my world is not to be ignored!

@luckytran definitely doing a lot of pretending it's not happening right now in my country. I feel like WHO is not even especially helpful right now. Everything seems reactive instead of proactive.
@luckytran Just like we rushed to forget after 1918.

@luckytran Do we celebrate that before or after "Spanish Flu Day"?

Oh wait, that doesn't exist either, albeit double digit million deaths...

Black death day? No?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think we're lucky that we barely managed to install AIDS day.

@luckytran people would just take it as yet another signal that it's over when it isn't though
@luckytran
Not properly mourning everyone we lost to COVID has made the USA insane. It's our crazy aunt in the attic. It will eat at us until we address it.
