Alberta now has over 600 confirmed cases of measles. The entire United States, with 10× the population has 1050+.

Alberta is more than halfway to the U.S. total and closing fast. This is Danielle Smith’s Alberta, where UCP priorities favour ideology over public health, and their sheer failure to act fuels preventable outbreaks.

FIRE THE UCP. #abpoli #alberta

@jace not to remove anything from the Alberta criticism, but the US infrastructure was already shit and has been basically dismantled, so their numbers are severely underreported

@jace

Not surprising that the hot spots in Canada are the two most committed conservative governments (AB, ON)

Comparing case levels between Canada and the US is tricky because we have much better surveillance system… who knows how many uncounted cases are hiding in rural Texas?

But your point stands: that this is an outbreak centred in conservative strongholds on both sides of the border, fuelled by their wacky anti-science stance.

@jace Not to be “That Guy” but Alberta’s population is way lower than you’re making it sound here. I know you meant to say “The entire US, with 10x the population of all of Canada, has 1050+.”

So it’s actually much worse than you made it sound. 🧐

@jace
Alberta's next step will be to restrict access to the statistics of communicable diseases.
Vaccines have the obstacle of a poke with a needle which for many is an obstacle to be overcome. Governments need to help by encouraging motivating people to vaccinate.

@jace in the States, the secretary of health and human services had prohibited testing people who work with livestock for bird flu, because he didn't like that there were cases detected.

So I wouldn't put much stock in the US case numbers.

Danielle Smith demands referendum to separate measles from Albertans

EDMONTON – As Alberta suffers its worst measles outbreak since the 1980s, Premier Danielle Smith has called on Albertans to demand a better deal from the airborne disease.

The Beaverton

@joacim @jace

About right:

"Fittingly, a small minority of us are going to do our best to decide the entire province’s fate,” said a measles-infected Albertan."

@joacim @jace "As we all know, medical science has yet to find a way to prevent preventable diseases" 🤣
@NovaNaturalist @jace Here I am, thinking Canadians were the sensible ones.
@jace - We can blame RFK jr "Worm Head" for this fiasco.
