I’m on a #kdrama pilgrimage today, visiting the noodle shop from Nevertheless and most importantly, the railway crossing from #MyMister, a leading character in the show. This is a super cute and trendy area with upscale cafés and restaurants side by side with very old and tiny houses and businesses.

@EllenInEdmonton Hmm, I should pick Nevertheless back up. Just looked like it was going places that hurt last time

@joakimfors
I really liked Nevertheless and I recently rewatched it. It approaches relationships a lot differently than most k-dramas. More realistic, in my opinion. And the Art School environment was interesting.
@EllenInEdmonton Yes, only 1.5 eps in but that's the vibe I'm getting. Also why it is a bit scary as it's unpredictable. Quite high, but fragile, tension already.
@joakimfors
Agreed. A lot of folks have pointed out that you are only inside her head for the show. Personally, I find his character super interesting. And attractive, obviously. Song Kang has taken on a pretty wide range of characters in his work and he nails them all. It was amazing that Sweet Home (especially season 2) was just appallingly bad but any scene that included him just glowed. Excited for his military service to be completed.
#kdrama
@EllenInEdmonton @joakimfors I enjoyed the Japanese version of Nevertheless, too.
@JillsJoy @EllenInEdmonton @joakimfors I liked the Japanese version for the styling; scenery, clothes etc was all amazing. Story wise the #kdrama wins for me. I liked how rounded the characters were, and eg. how the ML always asked for consent etc while everyone was messing up just like you do at that age.

@mel @JillsJoy @EllenInEdmonton Even though there is tension it's still very relaxed and free from the most formulaic stuff. Nice. Nabi is just stuck in her own preconceptions/trauma/societal expectations.

I'm actually a bit more interested in the Sol/Ji Wan ship as that is a lot more complicated/sensitive.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Nabi falling asleep while camping… just accept that you're 2ML bro.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Rolling up in the PPL Maserati you just received as you do. Turning up the pressure. Awkward bro roadtrip to the fairs.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Everything and everyone blowing up now.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

BTW Bit Na (Hye Ji) looks like STAYC Yoon

Sol/Ji Wan 😭 화이팅

… aaand 🦋 cliffhanger

#Nevertheless #kdrama

IJBOL, said Bit Na looks like STAYC Yoon and now she’s in a bar where ASAP is playing in the background

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Seol Ah always causing trouble. At least JiSol is on the right track.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Bit Na is a riot. The desperation.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

… well that's one ship hoisting sails. A few more to go. Some people better hurry t f up to get their stuff in order, only 1 ep to go.

… starting to recognize this city wall.

… yellow umbrella time?!

#Nevertheless #kdrama

YES! ☔

Well… ok then.

Writer-nims causing trouble again. Suspect ep 10 is going to be complicated.

… haven't seen Mr White Truck yet either.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Yes, Jae Eon, you should have listened to Gyu Hyeon and stopped playing.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Hmm, is JiSol confirmed sailing too?

… and Bit Na is D E D HAHAHAHAHAHA

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Confirmed, JiSol is the cutest… BitHyeon not far behind. Needed those couples to hold the angst team at bay.

A bit curious if KPam and KJim in the KOffice are going anywhere too.

The sculpture got hit by the ghost of the white truck.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Seems like Mr Noodle is back in the friend zone. KPam&KJim are basically married, just that no one has told them yet.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

Well, everything is sailing.

Would have liked the ending resolved just a tiny bit differently. Felt the later part of the drama was carried by the other couples.

#Nevertheless #kdrama

@joakimfors Yes. I'm not fond of the #Kdrama custom of waiting until the last 5 minutes of the final episode to put couples back together. It isn't very satisfying. But I loved their teamwork completing her final project.

@EllenInEdmonton Yeah, it's quite lazy. A lot of the time preceded by some unnecessarily dramatic trivial misunderstanding just to stretch the episodes.

Pinging in @mel as I understood they have thoughts on the complete show

-

Aaaanywhooo, after having slept on this and digested it a bit my crazy wild delulu theory is that the real main leads are Sol and Ji Wan. Nabi and Jae Eon are just a really elaborate cover to get past the censors/prejudice. 1/n

#Nevertheless #kdrama

@EllenInEdmonton @mel

They went wild and free with the initial decoy mains to make room for the more "controversial" actual main couple. When the audience has been lulled into a false sense of security in the first half the fake mains get a generic storyline and the actual story can develop beautifully.

Thank you for coming to my TED talk.  2/2 (?)

@EllenInEdmonton @mel IJBOL, reading the intertubes it seems like I'm far from the only one with the same observations. Damn, this* ship has a huge fanclub.

*) SolJiwan

@joakimfors @EllenInEdmonton Ha! My main point was that a lot of peeps say that the main OTP relationship is toxic, where to me it seems like something that happens a lot nowadays, eg. a fear of labeling what you have, trying to be poly (which is different than one-sided wanting to be 'free' as in this one) and other experimenting, and where the ML here at least is very open about what he wants and she can stop it anytime. (All newer to Korea than EU of course!)
@joakimfors @EllenInEdmonton But besides that, I am there with you that all relationships in this series where about that same point: young people who want to do things differently, and are all trying to find the type of relationship that fits best. So it is not so much about the first OTP, and it would have been better if they had not spend so much time on them. However, the 1ML was interesting, yes.
@mel @joakimfors
I think OTP is One True Pairing, which I don't think this show conveys. Both leads had other relationships and are still unclear about what they want for themselves. Even though they both said they didn't want to date, they were pretty exclusive with each other during the hot phase of their relationship. They were. very considerate towards each other. And then, she decided she wanted something different. In any relationship, that can happen.
@EllenInEdmonton @mel I interpreted it like she really did want it (first half rel) but imposed limits on herself based on preconceptions, misdirected respect, societal demands and past traumas. (that's a pile and a half 😅). Jae Eon was basically hooked from the start (confirmed later) but didn't do much in clearing things up. Hot-phase they were basically dating but she didn't want to go public even though I think Jae Eon wouldn't have had any problem with that despite the image

@EllenInEdmonton @mel I don't really know where I'm going with this train of thought. Perhaps it's more a rejection and criticism of societies that create such rigid artificial rules that make persons forsake good things. 😅

*feeling rebellious against norms*

#Nevertheless #kdrama

@joakimfors @EllenInEdmonton Not entirely her fault, the mess, right? He also did not want to date bc he did not like the concept, he did not want to label what they had... And wasn't he showing his butterflies to other girls as well?

And on another level: a bit rebellious is always good 😄

@mel @EllenInEdmonton Yeah, he for sure didn't help by being vague and mysterious. But during the not-dating-dating phase he was committed IIRC.

I don't think he himself actually said that he would not date, only other people told Nabi that. Though there was a brief exchange where that could be implied though at the same time not.

(Don't know how much was lost in translation either, might be more clear in Korean)
