I wish I could fund a mail client for modern #GNOME. Geary is going to be stuck in GTK3 for the foreseeable future, Evolution, while nice, is in the same position due to it's custom widgets, and Thunderbird doesn't use GOA ...
It's a bummer that there is a whole IMAP/SMTP setting in GOA, but no GTK4 application consumes it!

@pojntfx Never heard of GOA... though I use #Gnome. Just searched for it... "Gnome Online Accounts" doesn't sound like something I want or miss. 🤷

Anyway, with mail clients I am "stuck" with #Thunderbird anyway, 'cause it's the only client I know that handles identities the way I want:
If I have my own domain like mydomain.com and so I do enter my email addresses at services like "random123@mydomain.com" I can easily send and reply with that sender without having to setup a whole account. Win.

Pre-alpha stuff though, not necessarily going to materialize. But folks are working on it

@AdrianVovk I tried this yesterday, it's quite nice UI-wise, but yes very early-stage!
@AdrianVovk Honestly it sounds like one of those "I wish I could just pay someone to work on it, so many people would benefit but I can't work on it myself" kind of issues ...
@pojntfx @AdrianVovk i’d love to know, in broad strokes, why geary can’t be brought into the gtk4 world. it’s so close to what i want in an email client. so close.
@deobald @pojntfx Technically it can be. Just need someone to work on it... And the maintainer has little interest because the other project exists

@AdrianVovk @pojntfx ha. i should have read the issue before posting emojis. guess it’s on me to find money for this. :p

A decade ago, Yorba tried and failed to meet their all-or-nothing crowdfunding target for Geary: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/geary-a-beautiful-modern-open-source-email-client#/

Email clients are a special kind of hell to maintain, and since historically they all use custom widgets (whether HTML rendering or GTK) with ludicrous scalability/performance requirements, they are very vulnerable to devhell on any major new toolkit releases…

@pojntfx I am lost without Evolution, but I would love to see a few things modernized with it, as well as a Fediverse plugin so I can do my tootin' while I work better.
@pojntfx I am unfamiliar with "GOA". I imagine it's some kind of persistent dictionary which stores your mail/calendar/notes account providers etc? If the only limitation to thunderbird is that, then why not fund somebody writing a fork of Thunderbird which *does* support GOA? (Personally I don't use Thunderbird, I use web clients but I am trying to transition). You could even try to add the functionality yourself?

@pojntfx There's a bug report on @thunderbird issue tracker https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=847989. "P5" means they'd accept a patch.

Or, maybe we can convince @ryanleesipes to reprioritize it. :)

@pojntfx just ✨give up✨ on GNOME 😊
