[1] Last day to submit a #PublicComment on the #fda's policy to limit #covid #vaccine accessibility to those who are 'one or more risk factors that put them at high risk for severe Covid-19 outcomes' or who are 65 and older. Here is the policy document published in NEJM (1).

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMsb2506929

It's published in a reputable journal and it sounds fine on paper, right? We want to protect those who are at the highest risk. So then what is the problem?

[2] First off - vaccines are #safe and #effective. Full stop. No question about it. Safety has been proven over and over, again and again. (2) A collective base of knowledge, expertise, and experience totaling in terms of centuries goes into each stage. Vaccines are thoroughly tested in a careful, painfully slow process. The number one priority in every step is safety. They don't even test for effectiveness until stage 2 and even then, the primary focus is safety. I really like Wikipedia's short and sweet overview of how clinical trials for vaccines work. (3)

[3] Secondly, I had a case of mild COVID. At the time I was in my late 20's, otherwise completely healthy. My life was completely flipped in a matter of weeks and months. COVID-19 infection complications for me include POTS (4), #brainfog (5), #migraines, debilitating increase in ADHD symptoms, and #cfs (6). I personally know several others like me. Mild != no consequences

[4] Thirdly, as a computational infectious disease modeler I spend a lot of time infecting fake populations in order to more completely understand #disease #transmission. Vaccinating high risk people alone cripples the protection this policy claims to desire. I could stand on a soapbox for months, but I will spare you and instead direct you to a great tool surprisingly published by #nyt (7 -gift article link).

[5] Then there is the #money portion of this debate. They want to strip #VaccineResearch away from the public. They claim its to better direct resources. We know that is a lie. This is shown by their recommendation that only 'high risk' individuals be vaccinated. In my previous post we established this is counter to the goal of 'evidence based public health'. By vaccinating a small proportion of the population, we do very little to move the needle. The enemy is transmission at a population scale.

If you want to know the effect of this policy, take a look at how #healthinsurance companies decide what and what not to cover (8) This recommendation will lead to #insurancecompanies dropping vaccinations (8). Fun side fact, many people assert vaccines are a money laundering scam and big pharma wants you to get vaccinatied to rake in the cash. However, vaccines actually end up hurting the pharmaceutical industry's business model (9, 10, 11)

[6] Beyond direct #clinical impacts, the FDA policy also targets research funding, stating that research not directed towards their defined group of 'high risk groups' should not receive public funding. This will ripple out to other vaccines with #misinformation from government health agencies lending credence to conspiracy theories and power hungry assholes. Another fun fact, the alternatives these demon spawn are hawking are part of a $6.3T (yes, trillion) industry. (12) Follow the money? Your nose will point straight at the wellness industry, compared to the 'paltry' $1.6T big pharma was estimated to be worth.

[7] I would like to make a shoutout to all of those who are working hard in public health communication. I really respect and appreciate those of you, like @luckytran, covering these horrific policies and events. You make sure the public is informed of the facts and how this administration is twisting and breaking the truth to suit their desires.
