Happy #SherlockHolmesDay & birthday to #Edinburgh scribe Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, still commemorated with a statue of the great detective close to his family home here our #UNESCO City of Literature, & a nearby pub named after him (the greatest honour a Scotsman can hold!)

Also, Jeremy Brett remains the finest screen incarnation of Holmes. I will brook no arguments on this point!

I wonder what Conan Doyle would make of the huge triumph of modern Scottish crime fiction and the rise of #TartanNoir ? I'd like to think he's be delighted, also that many crime writers today will be raising a glass to Doyle's memory.
@LordWoolamaloo I also like Jeremy Brett version the best😃
@LordWoolamaloo
No argument from me! 🙂

@LordWoolamaloo I googled 'pub conan doyle' to find it, and found out I knew it when I lived in Edinburgh, but had forgotten 😳.

BUT: There is another Conan Doyle pub. In Italy! Here, to be precise:

Piazza Gioberti, 5, 84091 Battipaglia SA, Italien

I think a pilgrimage is in the offing ...

@LordWoolamaloo Agreed. Basil Rathbone was excellent in his time but Jeremy Brett WAS Holmes. A masterful interpretation of a character if ever there was one.
@LordWoolamaloo of course his is the gold standard against which all Holmes film characters are measured. Although quite fond of Clive Merrison’s radio Holmes.
