HELP!
I need to install a #TOTP app and don't want to use Google's. Any recommendations that are more privacy compliant? #hivemind #degooglify
Do you recommend Aegis Authenticator? #totp #degooglify #degoogle
@diraquel I switched to Aegis from Google a year or so ago. No complaints, no regrets. It's possible to do a bulk transfer using a giant QR code. Your mileage may vary depending on how many codes you have.
@edinburgh_man I"m starting from scratch, so I will not have that problem 😉
Thank you!
@diraquel I've been using Aegis for 2+ years, including a phone migration. No issues whatsoever!
@diraquel
Aegis has good rep.
I use andOTP...which is unmaintained. Guess I'll switch.
@tuga yes, I'm getting many recommendations for Aegis IRL also.
@diraquel I use #Aegis with local backups. People here also recommend @ente which provides a cloud backup: https://ente.io/auth/
Both are open source.
Ente Auth - Open source 2FA authenticator, with E2EE backups

Protect your accounts with Ente Auth - Free, open source, cross-platform 2FA authenticator, with end-to-end encrypted backups

@diraquel uso a freeotp https://freeotp.github.io/ já não te sei dizer quem me recomendou, nem porque.
FreeOTP

@diraquel apart from the “Microsoft” part, is there anything wrong with Microsoft Authenticator? Asking for a friend…
@clanger9 the Microsoft/Google part is the problem 😁
@diraquel indeed. While Microsoft Authenticator appears to be fairly benign (compared to Google), I know it’s not going to stay that way… 🤖
@diraquel I've been pretty happy with FreeOTP so far, local only, does backups with encryption.
@diraquel
FreeOTP+, available on F-Droid, also supports backups.
@diraquel I have used Aegis and it was good enough. I haven't used Ente but it looks good from a solid team - https://ente.io/auth/ . Lately I've been saving tokens inside OTP tokens inside keepass, but the UX sucks since there's not really a good was to import the qr code easily inside the app/database.

@diraquel The TOTP built into Bitwarden has worked well for me.
