#UpliftMoment

This morning I learned the Soup Kitchen in my #nyc neighborhood was $50k in the hole bc of fed grant cancellations

By midday I learned the entire neighborhood was throwing a fundraising party to feed mouthes uptown

This evening 100s of neighbors danced to Caribbean music & raised ❤️❤️&💰💰

@atthenius Gut-wrenching to see the effects of Federal funding cuts to feeding those in need. Noticed the Cabrini sticker on the poster in the image you included....cool...assuming it's related to the amazing Saint Cabrini who came to the States from Italy and helped so many in dire need get food, clothing, care, medical treatment, and access to education. Her good work not only in the States, but also in South America lives on through the hard work of good souls.

Yes - there used to be a Mother Cabrini high school in the neighborhood. Catholic Church downsizing sold that to a charter school about a decade ago. But that onsite shrine persists in the community. Other parishes in the neighborhood maintain the mission.

I’m not totally sure the relationships between this group and the shrine, but they are all dedicated to the mission of helping the poor.

Btw: it may not be obvious in the pic, but Everyone from the neighborhood helped. Even folks of other religions and allies you wouldn’t have expected to be fundraising a soup kitchen in a Church.

We are a united community.

@atthenius United to help each other regardless of religious belief is the only way to go. Although I happen to participate in a local church, my two best friends are athiests...they're awesome. 😃🤍😃
@atthenius yet another project where they can claim it was a waste of taxpayer money because obviously it can be funded by different means, so cutting the funding was right.

@dummzeuch

I will organize my neighbors to declare these deductions.

I expect my tax dollars to keep people from starving.

@atthenius

This is the kind of community mutual aid that infuriates the six dynasties funding Project 2025.

@Npars01

My community is very close - perhaps because the monetizing rent and what not that drive high community turn over hit us pretty recently. Folks here have lived uptown for years if not decades (rare in manhattan).

These deep personal connections mean that we step up for each other.

Of course we aren’t billionaires- tax bills aren’t coming down to bankroll these personal passion events so it takes everybody chipping in not just the few.

But folks will do all in their power to help out each other.

I think we can do it. It won’t be easy- but I think we can.

@atthenius humans are inherently community driven!

The capitalists privatize and restrict community because they know we are so powerful together.
