Fuck it. The ARM Cuauhtémoc, a tall ship used as a sail trainer by the Mexican navy, just collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. I've always liked that ship, and the video of it striking the bridge is horrifying. Apparently there are critical injuries among the crew -- it looks like the yards were manned when she hit — as well as substantial damage to the ship.

@angusm I know nothing about sailing, but how does this happen? Wouldn't they know the clearance?
@blakeashleyjr @angusm The video shows them drifting backwards into the bridge. They lost power. With no engine, and no sails up, you can't maneuver. All one would have is dropping anchors. It's a terrifying situation with a large boat.
@angusm This was tragic. An incoming tide leaves very little room for error for a tall ship in that part of the harbor. Probably not even enough time to drop anchor and get it to hold.

@jpreardon Video shows a Moran tug trying to overtake her, perhaps with the idea of getting astern and pushing her away from the bridge, but she was moving much too fast.

She’s at Pier 35 now. I caught a glimpse of her masts between buildings when I was on my way past earlier today, and they’re a mess.

@angusm Can understand your affinity for her...she's a beautiful ship. Such a tragic accident.
