The goal of the companies who run AIs is to

1. get us all to use AI until the point where

2. we're dependent on AI, then

3. remove all access to AI and

4. grant the privilege of use only to those who pay a monthly fee,

5. which will periodically rise

6. while the service becomes worse and worse.

It'll be enshittification of enshittification.

enshittiception

@courtcan I can't wait for this year's Enshitticon in Palm Beach.
@AinsleyLowbeer @courtcan Entry fee only payable in Enshitticoin!

@courtcan Sounds about right. It's currently costing them vast sums of money. They're not spending that without the expectation they can recoup it eventually.

And even if you try to avoid getting dependent on AI for your own life, you can't stop your employer and every business and organisation you deal with getting sucked into this trap, so one day you'll be paying for that when their costs go up

@courtcan With this enshittification cycle though, not only services will be enshittified.

Information & language itself will be the target.

The enshittified systems won’t even talk about things that better your life, only of the owner class.

Everything’ll be wrapped in covert advertising, and you’ll be expected to think of it as ”normal”.

They’ll just lie to your face with a smile, while people in charge shift blame to the system, the makers of which can’t ever be reached.

@courtcan In the worst possible scenario, the libertarian cucks went and formed a ”freedom city” of their own, where legislation can never reach them. They’re their own country now.

Which is where we should leave them if they’re that stupid.

Let them eat their servers.

@courtcan Black Mirror S07E01
@mnf @courtcan that’s exactly what I thought of when I read this.
@courtcan Automated progressively increasing enshitification as a product. Great, where do I sign up.
@spanghero NEW OLD ACHIEVEMENT! If you're using the internet, you're already signed up! 😀
@courtcan they're running their AI engines at a massive loss right now and burning investor funding. They're all trying to dominate the market and squeeze each other out. The technological leaps to make each query cheaper is being cancelled out by the increasing complexity for diminishing returns. It's definitely going to get more expensive.
@courtcan
Sounds like the business model of drug dealers. 😉
@plumeros @courtcan Damn, this is something to think about tonight 🫨

@courtcan yeah, nah mate, I'll just keep writing my own mails and code thanks

Gives me the advantage of actually understanding what I'm doing as well.

While we're at it, when did all this learned helplessness start, that AI is making worse?

@lucydev @courtcan Right, doing our work on our own makes us confident and gives us a better understanding of our material
@lucydev My guess would be the Industrial Revolution.
@courtcan
For me the goal is to get more and more data from everyone without render a decent service.🤮
@DataKnightmare

@courtcan
...All of this by steal-mining the data ore produced by us, contributors, help-seekers, content-producers, writers, scientists, designers, coders, photographers, artists, ...

#extractivism #automatedGreed

@courtcan
You are writing "default drug dealer business model" wrong ;)
@courtcan AI is about power, money is just a tool here. A power for gods, with the brain of a immature man baby under influence. So the only horizon is end of democracy, end of livable climate and... Paradise bunkers for gods ruling over ruins.
@courtcan 'everything is a grift now' as @ErikUden already mentioned 🫤
@courtcan
Wouldn't be the first time they pull the rug from under us.
@courtcan to reach a state of enshittifentropy.
@courtcan: Enshittification²

@courtcan I think you're 100% correct. It's the only way they can make it profitable.

Microsoft did it with Windows on Govt computers a while back - gifting the OS for 'free', then charging later.

Elon did it with Ukraine and Starlink.

And now they're doing it with AI. But there's a crucial difference - Windows and Starlink *worked*. AI is a toy.

@courtcan And how bad would your life be if you opted out of social media to avoid the trap. And also thinking for ourselves rather than be dumped down by technology. Maybe the grass would be greener and the skies bluer
@amazing_steve94 @courtcan dropping the other social media sites driven by algorithms and dark patterns definitely made a difference, I include YouTube with this as well, because it is also very much part of the problem. Non AI and non-algorithm driven interaction will be the gold standard for me forever going forward having seen the difference between both...
@courtcan

SaaS as "software as a service" to be replaced by "shit as a service".
@courtcan The only winning move is not to play.
@courtcan Desinformation will Always BE free though
@courtcan It worked with search. It'll with with AI unfortunately.
@courtcan isnt there a point to be made about destroying better and open infrastructure by basically crawling it to death in the meantime (hence furthering their monopolization)? we need a new web
@courtcan Some AIs you can run locally, offline on your own PC, that could help mitigate this if it ever happens.

@helloyanis

The people addicted to AI use will still have no skills, be unable to think for themselves, and believe themselves to be extra special geniuses...

Intellectual zombies, in other words.

@courtcan

@courtcan
Same with online banking and online shopping versus cash.
They're getting rid of banks so we have no choice how we use money.
Then they have a shit load of data on what we spend and where and how often. Then we are in their control.
@courtcan more basic bitch rent seeking behavior. predictable and pathetic.
@courtcan - AI is almost like the Nosy Neighbor tattling on the new lawn mower you bought and not lending it to them.
@courtcan also see Amazon, Netflix, Uber & Google business models...

@courtcan

There goes your preference you have in your handle.

I Would Prefer Not To: Žižek’s Bartleby Politics - The Dangerous Maybe - Medium

The assertion “I would prefer not to” has become the official motto of philosopher Slavoj Žižek. For those of us in critical theory and continental philosophy circles, it has even become a humorous…

Medium
@courtcan I think you're right, but I suspect it'll end up like ads on a streaming service - we'll have to pay NOT to have it.

@courtcan

Or maybe/also...

1. get us all to use AI until the point where

2. we're dependent on AI, then

3. Start to re-engineer the LLMs to reflect a new political and social reality backed by an entirely new history to supports the new reality

@courtcan if you put it like that... it's the new drug. It's alcohol, tobacco, or opiates all over again.

❗❗❗ONE HUNDRED FUCKING PERCENT ❗❗❗

AI is most definitely the latest in the human-history-long line of Things We Humans Use To Ward Off The Reality Of Our Lack In This Universe.

We've found out that

gods
nature
other humans & our interactions with them
accumulation of wealth, power, security, and status
drugs and other substances
food and drink
health and fitness

ALL do not have The Answer.

Generative AI leaders are the new pushers and preachers--and AI is the "salvatory" drug.

@kyonshi

@courtcan in this context, it makes sense that students would be socially encouraged to cheat on assignments at school (the place where you usually learn about the basic things you need to know so you can develop further on your own)

both to undermine their ability to do that,

and also to burn out the teachers who are, for the most part, operating in spite of all of this

@courtcan (and in _that_ context, i'd strongly discourage any country from trying to "compete" in this race, because doing basically nothing already is a long-term advantage for the society you live in)
@courtcan "enshittiception" = word of the century
@courtcan
Let's please also coin the term enstupidification
