This piece is the beginning of my more narrative, storytelling pieces. It took me a long while, but I figured out that I could use this new and exciting style I was exploring to incorporate my instincts to tell stories. I had been a bit blind to the body of work my art heroes had been creating over the course of their lifetimes, and it hit me like a ton of bricks that the majority of the work they’d made referenced symbols and tales that were part of history and their current cultural zeitgeist. I wanted to do the same, and I was stunned I hadn’t seen it before. I didn’t need to create “High Art” by inventing a new perspective on seeing the world—I could simply tell the stories I wanted to tell in a way I wanted to tell them. So I started with this image.
