While I’ve been inspired by the work of Margaret Macdonald Mackintosh and her particular take on the Art Nouveau style, I’m proud to say that with each piece I’ve started to step further away from trying to emulate her work and leaning more into my own preferences and skillset. Every new piece I’ve made has been more and more my own expression. And this piece, The Ugly Duckling, was no exception. I’m quite proud of it!

Loving the fairy tale series. Any chance of The Princess and The Pea?

This piece is the beginning of my more narrative, storytelling pieces. It took me a long while, but I figured out that I could use this new and exciting style I was exploring to incorporate my instincts to tell stories. I had been a bit blind to the body of work my art heroes had been creating over the course of their lifetimes, and it hit me like a ton of bricks that the majority of the work they’d made referenced symbols and tales that were part of history and their current cultural zeitgeist. I wanted to do the same, and I was stunned I hadn’t seen it before. I didn’t need to create “High Art” by inventing a new perspective on seeing the world—I could simply tell the stories I wanted to tell in a way I wanted to tell them. So I started with this image. It alludes to the fairytale, “The Princess and the Pea”. It’s available as a greeting card here: https://goimagine.com/princess-and-the-pea-single-illustrated-greeting-card-5x7-with-envelope/ and part of a pack here: https://goimagine.com/art-nouveau-fairytale-variety-pack-1-of-greeting-cards-5x7-with-envelopes/ And here’s the speedpaint: https://makertube.net/w/uwpznb4pBPLovoGvLDN62Z #art #illustration #fairytale #ArtNouveau #IndieArtist #GreetingCard #FediGiftShop
