Makes a lot of sense.
Rail vs trucks as well as solar powered buildings.

Construction giant Calder Stewart has proposed a "$3 billion" solar-powered inland port it says will boost Otago's export capacity and create hundreds of jobs.

The 'Milburn Quadrant development', north of Milton, would span over 200ha in total and host a 55ha inland port that connected directly to State Highway 1 and the South Island's main trunk rail line, a statement issued this morning said.

@BigD More trains and solar power, I'm totally there for it 🚂 🌞

The Port Chalmers road is full of container & logging trucks and the Port lacks storage space. Calder Stewart's announcement last week of a 200ha inland facility north of Milton, covered in solar, with direct connections to SH1 & the main trunk rail line. The rail connection will remove 10,000 heavy truck trips from the road each year. Even better, the entire $3bn project will be privately financed by Calder Stewart.

A few days later, Shane Jones announced the government was giving Port Otago and Dynes Transport an $8.2m loan for a competing plan to put an inland port in Mosgiel. This can only proceed if NZTA funds a heavy traffic bypass, which they’ve said they won’t do. And I’m sure Mosgiel folks don’t want a massive increase in trucking movements to clog their roads.

Whatever happened to ‘let the market decide’? Trust this coalition to back the wrong horse.

Government opens wallet for Mosgiel inland port

Days after Calder Stewart unveiled plans for a "$3 billion" inland port in South Otago, the government has stumped up $8 million for the rival...

@BobLefridge @craftygardennz @BigD @Antigrav Sounds like National ministers don't own enough shares of Calder Stewart to me.

One plan seems to be forward-thinking, fully-funded and very environmentally friendly. The other is fraught with difficulties and will likely require substantial government funding.

I wonder which donor/s Shane Jones was rewarding this time?

@yojimbo @craftygardennz @BigD @Antigrav

@BobLefridge @craftygardennz @BigD, haha, signs of the quality of this government - first you rob women to have some money for the budget, then you waste it where you don't have to and achieve a second grade outcome.
@BigD , Milton, I guess, is better than Mosgiel regarding flooding - I guess they would've worked that out.
Less trucks on the road, yay !
@Antigrav Calder Stewart are locals. They hopefully know where to build. They have built some impressive stuff elsewhere in the south. It looks a huge investment they are making, so let's hope it works for the good of many.
