A thread of non-electronic songs I've enjoyed. For me electronic and non-electronic music are just such different moods this needs a separate thread.

It'll probably feature a lot of reggae and soul, because I like those styles a lot, some disco, that kind of stuff. Occasionally something else too, whatever I'm in the mood for. But it'll mostly be stuff that makes me want to dance because I love that feeling.

1

First up, as I'm in a 'rocking mood' (if you get the reference...), a couple of scorchers from The Viceroys

The Viceroys - Let Him Go (Wrap Up)

Really don't know much about this song. Produced by Derrick Morgan, maybe with Lynn Taitt & The Jets. Not even listed on Discogs except on some 21st century compilations so maybe unreleased back then. But it's fantastic.

Second one from The Viceroys

The Viceroys - Give It to Him

From 1968. Also produced by Derrick Morgan. Also fantastic. Literal goosebumps when that bassline kicks in ❤️

And in the same mood, this one:

The Consummates - The More They Get

Or was it The Consumates? These guys don't even have a Wikipedia page, which is a shame given how good this is. Seems like it was maybe Frank Brown, with Lynn Taitt & The Jets. No idea the year this was recorded, just somewhere 66-68.

Real message for our times in this one, too.

More rocksteady...

The Clarendonians - Baby, Baby

The Clarendonians made a name releasing ska, before moving on to rocksteady and early reggae. This from 1968, Tommy McCook's Band on backing, is kind of bittersweet - lovely, yet melancholy.

The late, great Alton Ellis:

Another one from The Consummates:

The Consummates - Do It Now

These guys really knew how to make music. No idea why they had so few releases, this (from 1968) is wonderful.

Winston & George - Keep the Pressure On (Alternative version)

Such a feel-good sound, lovely stuff! George Agard was Desmond Dekker's (half) brother, later of The Pioneers; seems like this might be the only credit for Winston Weir.

Derrick Morgan - I Mean It

This is just shockingly good. Proper goosebumps listening to this one. Had to rewind twice. Just check out those pianos backing Derrick's voice, the bass, how perfectly they all complement each other, so so good ❤️

This is stunning:

The Originals Orchestra - Say You

Something really special about that contrast of that bassline with the almost ethereal tone of her voice.

Produced by Sonia Pottinger, Jamaica's first female producer.

Oldie, heard on last week's Glitterbox podcast:

Loleatta Holloway - Love Sensation (Shep Pettibone Remix)

Sampled so many times in so many tracks (Wikipedia lists more than 40). Ride On Time perhaps the famous of which (named from a mis-hearing of the lyrics), for which sadly she did not receive any royalties - or even credit.

@picard listen! You need to stop educating me about music I didn't know about. I needed this today :) :) :) Goodness how did I not know this existed. This is some good old ska! fantastic.
@cordova5029 😀😀 glad i could help! 😀 likewise really needed this sound, really hit the right spot today.
@picard IT was the thing where I didn't know what I was going to get when I clicked the enter thingy, and I got, horns and other ska noises in E major. Coooool! WIll never say no to a good sak song, unless of course, I'm feeling overloaded, and horns are just too rough a texture for my poor overloaded autistic ears. Then I'll throw on some Manheim Steamroler or something lol.
@cordova5029 I get you with some sounds being too much sometimes, and horns are definitely quite abrasive so can understand why they'd have that effect
@picard I can hear that George is Desmonds half brother, somehow. i wouldn't've immediately thought of it, but ya know what? it's totally there.
@cordova5029 interesting that you heard it! i didn't and was surprised when i went to find their details on discogs, but will have to take another listen later!
@picard it's in the top end of his voice. and some of his vocal articulations. I'm really strange, and can pick up on little insignificant to most, idiosyncracies about songs, voices, sounds, etc. yay Autism!
@cordova5029 that's really interesting! Thanks for sharing that, it sounds like a great skill to have 🙂
@picard I was more being snarky and playful when I said the thingy about the horns.
@cordova5029 oh right 😄 it has been a long day, I didn't notice. I'll be putting my phone down now but I usually get fixated on certain styles for a few days so may update the thread with more tomorrow 😄
