Sustainability requires a long-term systems-based approach to the planet. Often our politicians are too short-term and parochial in their thinking to tackle big challenges such as this. So we go through election cycles freewheeling downhill when we should be leading people to higher ground.
I think politicians have lost confidence in their ability to change people's hearts and minds, to truly lead. Maybe it is harder nowadays, but it is unambitious and patronising to think you can't.
