Tech Companies Apparently Do Not Understand Why We Dislike AI

It's becoming increasingly apparent that one of the reasons why tech companies are so enthusiastic about shoving AI into every product and service is that they fundamentally do not understand why people dislike AI. I will elaborate. I was recently made aware of the Jetbrains developer ecosystem survey, which included a lot of questions about AI. After I answered some of them negatively (and possibly…

Tech Companies Apparently Do Not Understand Why We Dislike AI - Dhole Moments

It’s becoming increasingly apparent that one of the reasons why tech companies are so enthusiastic about shoving AI into every product and service is that they fundamentally do not understand…

Dhole Moments
(Before anyone complains about the goatse with incorrect numbers of fingers: The other obvious parody of OpenAI's logo is a hate symbol and I didn't want to go with that.)
Oops.
Hacker News and its vaunted "meritocracy", folks:
I finally got around to adding a JavaScript snippet to add this to the front of the page if the referrer matches Hacker News.
@soatok I'd make the text even larger
@soatok I learned that dhole is a single syllable today and now the title of your blog makes a lot more sense.
@soatok how long until they add you to the exception list for referrers lol
@soatok It would be funny if it not only showed this message, but also made all furry art 50% bigger
@soatok How dare you show any personality! Go and be boring like the rest of us, goddammit!

@phryk This is always the funniest and dumbest cycle:

  • I write something on my furry blog.
  • Someone else submits it to Hacker news.
  • Someone complains about the furry art on my furry blog.
  • @soatok @phryk Quickly becoming my favourite genre of hacker news post.
    @soatok @phryk I love your blog because it appeals to… well me!
    @soatok @phryk resolution: add more furry art

    @soatok @phryk

    > Furry blog
    > looks inside
    > Furry content

    Hmm yes, the floor here is indeed made of floor.

    @sudo200 @soatok @phryk Did they think we were kidding with the photos of a bunch of furries on a plane and the title „if this plane crashes the world IT infrastructure will collapse“?

    @GreenSkyOverMe @soatok @phryk

    I never was and never will be a HackerNews user, but using basic observability tools (e.g. my eyes) I immediately noticed some entities on said platform are - to stay polite - not the sharpest tool in the digital shed.

    @soatok @phryk Add more furry art, do it!
    @Lingondraken @soatok @phryk If it's good enough for NIST it's good enough for me
    @soatok “INCREASE THE FUCKING THING” springs to mind 👀🐾✨😼
    @soatok an appeal to engineers who want to be taken seriously: quit gatekeeping workers based on how they present as a person
    @soatok of course, what they really mean is:
    `s/stop mixing.*/be a cishet white guy who worships Thiel/g`
    @soatok "An appeal to engineers who want to be taken seriously: Stop hanging around on 'hacker' 'news'."
    @soatok ppl when the furry blog has furries:
    @soatok An appeal to engineers who want to be taken seriously: get a fursona
    @soatok why did hackernews change the title on the post lol
    @Mae They do weird shit like that
    @Mae @soatok
    corollary: those insufficiently-creative to imagine themselves as a funny animal are insufficiently creative to be serious engineers.
    @Mae @soatok I don’t have a fursona, but if I did, it would be a porcupine.
    @soatok if the blog has a fursona i know im getting quality
    @soatok I don't trust an engineer without a fursona. See, it tells me they're not some weird crypto nerd gushing over whatever vacuous deadeyed techbro he (because it's always 'he') worships, they have a spirit and dare I say more humanity than the critics. But that's Hacker News for you, vibe coding as a spirit animal.
    @nini @soatok Look who's gatekeeping now. Sincerely, a boring cishet guy who has hobbies and passions which happen to be unrelated to how I identify as a person.
    @soatok please keep mixing whatever you like with very good content.
    And if I may, the images aren't rendered in Firefox reader mode (it used to work). I suppose something change in your markup
    @soatok
    The folks who keep taking your articles seriously enough to link to them sure do have a lot of advice on how you could be taken seriously.
    @soatok I suspect the gatekeeper is not an actual engineer but merely a glorified computer-toucher, a human husk drained of empathy, personality, and humor. Basically the HackerNews demographic.
    @soatok The only reason why people write blogs: To be taken seriously as an engineer.
    I mean doing it for fun, or just to get a rant out of your system, that would be ridiculous. We can't have that. Especially in a community made up of full time serious professionals like hacker news.
    @soatok To quote "Donnie Darko": "Why are you wearing that stupid human suit?"
    @soatok I feel like adding furry imagery added to your credibility, if anything.
    @soatok an appeal to random internet strangers: let other internet strangers do what they want.

    @soatok

    Remembered this existed. For the weirdo complaining about the furry art.

    A) I see what Doing Numbers means on Fedi

    B) This is Ancient and if someone wants to make a more Gender Inclusive version that would be excellent.

    @soatok an appeal to "engineers" who have difficulty coping with how queer and furry the tech world is: die mad about it.
    @soatok I'm not as active in that fandom as I was few years ago, but seeing techbros whine like this makes me want to use my ponysona and domain shine.horse everywhere I can again :)
    @soatok any person in tech should know that the furrier and gayer the avatar, the more trustworthy the source
    @soatok It's already flagged dead in the screenshot?
    @finagle Sure, but someone still went through the trouble of making a throwaway just to post that
    @soatok
    I take a lot of people MORE seriously when I know they're a furry. It usually means they're not trying to sell me (or a venture capitalist) on some baseless bullshit.

    @heathen_cat

    This!

    The day the FAANGs start dressing their salesmen as furries hell will freeze over, so it's a good metric. The furry concerned about secops is probably actually concerned about secops, and so am I!

    @tbortels @heathen_cat that's a really interesting attack vector...

    I'm imagining furry spies right now 🙂

    @heathen_cat @soatok yeah.
    In most cases, I would even say this about most people who are fine with being (some form of) openly "different" (or weird, in the positive sense, or ...). Usually a good sign when they don't put up façades or wear (metaphorical) masks.
    Also relaxing to encounter these people, at least for some you can feel it too, that feeling of them not expecting you to pretend too.
    @soatok I don't trust an engineer that doesn't have any furry art!
    @soatok
    Well, it's their fault that someone can't handle the handsomeness of this floof
    @soatok appeal to engineers who mix fursonas with technical blog posts: keep up the good work!

    @soatok

    An appeal to anyone who cares about professionalism: don't, there's no point, all it does is reinforce the idea that there's a right way to be to which all must conform
