Trump is shutting out European movies from the US market by putting a 100 percent tariff on them.

Put a 100 percent tariff on US streaming services, and let us see if Trump still has the support of Jeff Bezos, owner of Amazon Prime.

@randahl
I see this more as move towards them controlling which movies get made, to miminize the "wrong kind of movies" aka pushing their narrative.

But, It will be interesting to see if the European consumers willingness to be anti-American for food and cars can extend to streaming and movies, and it'll be interesting to see the production cost go up for the hollywood movies.

@randahl Hmmm, I think it also is a way of shutting out ideas, worldviews and criticism.

@randahl @ashtime

Agreed. In 1983, the US tried to label Canadian movies as propaganda because the filmmakers had the courage to challenge ideas like nuclear weapons.

This is just a continuance of that.

@randahl He may also be upset because many of the studios use Canadian locations to film and fake them into being US locations. Canada is a foreign land to him.
@CodieneC @randahl Haven't heard whether this new #trumptax on Americans will apply to films made in #Canada

@CodieneC @randahl LOL. Everyone & everything not him is foreign to him.

Not foreign to him: His own "Me! Me! Me! Want! Want! Want!" instincts & obsessions.

@randahl Only the wealthiest DESERVE the bread and circuses provided to true loyal MAGA.

I’m sure it will work out fine.

We’ll just eat all that cake while watching the exclusive Marvel movies that only WE can barely afford because now there won’t be the other 2/3rds of income from the rest of the planet who can’t afford triple the retaliatory tariffs on US films.

War makes EVERYTHING AWESOME!!

@randahl More than that. Let every country that kowtowed to the US in the last 40 years and reformed copyright to be +90 years go back to the traditional 20. Let's see how they fare when all movies released before 2005 are public domain.
@spineless_echidna this should be a worldwide strategy in response to the stupidity that the US is promoting.

@randahl @mkoek I cancelled already my US streaming accounts (HBO & Prime) .😅

(And advised others to do the same)

@randahl Why does he care about Hollywood? Isn't that part of the RADICAL WOKE LEFT?
@lnkvt @randahl good point. Maybe he wants to turn Hollywood into a part of the radical fascist right 🤷🏻‍♀️. I wouldn't be surprised
@randahl
I literally don't understand how that would work. What exactly is the "good(product)" crossing borders that an importer would have to pay the tariff for in that case. Film reels? Hard drives? "Data"?
@painting_squirrel
Yeah, it seems like the kind of thing lawyers would work around with US subsidiaries renting movies very very cheaply.
@randahl
@randahl My first thought was, that he probably didn't like 'No other land'. Is European cinema a thing in the US?
EDIT: I think he is talking about the production of movies, that can be anything that wasn't produced in Hollywood. It still doesn't make sense.

@randahl

Wait until he finds out that the Beatles are English , that Abba is Swedish , that the original versions of Beyond the Sea and My Way are French….

Luckily not books (foreign or American ) will be taxed , they will only be banned .

This country is in freefall ( new motto for the UStandAlone )
#usa #tariffs

@randahl

How will he set the tarrifs for movies like the Marvel ones, which are US "made" but are filmed and often produced in places like Europe, New Zealand, and Australia?

He really IS a moron.

#USPol

@randahl

LOL there’s no way he wrote this himself. The sentence structure is too complex, and some of the words are too big for him. I bet he’s never said the phrase “concerted effort” in his life.

@KydiaMusic @randahl Has he got a bespoke LLM for ranting like him?

@ariaflame @randahl

Probably a staff member, possibly that Temu Nosferatu ghoul, Stephen Miller

@randahl Offering incentives to have movies filmed in a country isn't a national security threat to the US.

Dementia Donny still has to adhere to the Constitution and law, and specifically said this was a national security threat as a means to justify these tariffs.

They will be struck down as unlawful, as usual, because he's acting unlawfully, as usual.

Can Presidents Set Tariffs Alone? - U.S. Constitution.net

Constitutional Basis for Tariff Authority Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution vests the power to lay and collect tariffs with Congress. The Founding Fathers intended for legislative oversight on taxation, tariffs, and related financial matters, viewing tariffs as strategic levers to be used with caution and prudence. Historically, Congress set tariffs and maintained […]

@randahl How does one tariff a streaming service? It doesn't go through customs.

@randahl the antichrist is such a fucking moron

that is all

@randahl
Marvel should make Hulk orange!
@randahl How does one impose tariffs on a movie? Double ticket prices? So streaming services get exempt?
@Abazigal @randahl @ariaflame something tells me this tarif is going to be an actual tax, exempting US products from it
@Agonio @Abazigal @randahl But what are they going to tax?

@ariaflame @Abazigal @randahl I'm guessing licenses. Like, next time Netflix renovates the license to a series made overseas, there will be a 100% tax towards the US government

Now that I think of it, this simply means Netflix and other US-based services will have a harder time buying exclusive licenses to content compared to other services...

Also, Sex Education is a Netflix original but it's set in the UK... Will it be taxed?

@Agonio @Abazigal @randahl Ted Lasso is on Apple TV but it's set in the UK.
Do they want even more Americans to forget that other places exist?

@randahl

Spreading disinformation and lies are his style.

More than 200 lawsuits and many judicial setbacks in Trump's first 100 days, and this number is growing. Most of them argue that the EO (Executive Orders) on unconstitutional ..

@randahl The moment my Netflix goes up I'm canceling it. We shall sail the seas once more then.
@randahl
I hope streaming services are going to pay more to foreign content to onboard them. And consumers stop subscribing to streaming services.
Win-win situation in a way.
@randahl Cancel Netflix and Amazon Prime, folks.
@randahl
Trump didn't understand (as usual) the problem: the American film industry is dying because they haven't had any new idea for years. If they had them they wouldn't need prequels, new versions of old films or new films with the same script as always with minimal differences. Which is the vast majority of american movies these days.

@ModestinoSycamore

Uhm... much of the movies of "former glory" have been rip offs from EU movies.

50 American Remakes [aka Rip-Offs] of European Movies

Since there were a few classics missing that I remembered in the list above, here is another list of US movies ripped off from EU movies:

*Note: When the US appropriates it's a "remake" if others remake US movies it's usually headlined with "Rip-Offs"

List Challenges

@randahl It is staggering to realise how little he knows. Most pple reading this can see without thinking why it is a bad idea and would hurt the US more.

Unfortunately, the man in charge is ignorant enough to actually do it then act surprised when they don't thank him for it. Smh

@randahl More to the point, how do you administer a tariff on something that essntailky never physically crosses a border?

How do you define a foreign film? Does having some scenes shot on location in London or Paris count? What about foreign films that use US writers, VFX, directors, actors?

As usual another unworkable, half baked brain fart.

@Beelbeebub I suppose it is when a non-US company sells a movie to theaters in the US. But of course no one knows in the age of government by Trump post.
@randahl, I tell you a secret: the last time I watched a Hollywood movie was in 1992.
@randahl Or, even better, as I suggested the other day, dismiss IP protection for US streaming services & let businesses download their content & offer it to audiences on whatever terms they feel like...
@randahl ai is taking more jobs in Hollywood than nations outside the iron american curtain

@randahl wtf…

Never had Netflix and don’t need Prime either…

@randahl Are books next?

@Thoreau @randahl

Yes, but maybe they won’t get his attention as he never reads and has the attention span of a rabbit…

@randahl

Well done Donnie, let's just paint a big BOYCOTT THIS MOVIE on everything coming out of Hollywood.

Let's ignore what happened in CA when you threatened them.

(Yeeha more space for Eurasian, African and Lower Americas movies.)

@randahl
Per usual the orange oaf didn't do his homework. It is German public funded ARD and ZDF that produced shows with US companies to lessen the risk investment any production presents. Just ask Kevin Costner on his Waterworld losses.

US companies preferred Toronto over Hollywood.

Trump is only giving Hollywood the final death blow by his tariffs since foreign money and more affordable locations are cut off.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

#Hollywood #Trump #MemesPolitics #Tariffs #Economics

@randahl Can't wait to see his reboot of the Oscars.

@randahl
What I've not gathered from the headlines is what about the films made in UK by US companies...
Are they British or American?

What about if they are filmed in Canada (as many cities there stand in for more expensive US ones) they are American if not US?

Anyway from an idiot who sends out images of himself as pope.. and talks about reopening a tourist attraction (closed because it was too expensive to run because it had no natural water supply and dumped it's sewage in San Francisco bay) as a prison in the 21st century what can you expect.

He even rolled back his headline policy within hours...

The man would be a joke if he hadn't been elected into the most powerful job in the West and being supported by morons afraid of their shadows

@cockneylaurie British actors in a Danish movie written by a Swede are streamed from a Canadian streaming service by a Californian.

What is the price Donny?

@randahl Ahh... So all these RED STATES that ended any support for the movie industry in their states by ending incentives, tax breaks, etc. didn't create most of this issue? Check out how Republicans KILLED the largest movie industry on the East Coast in NC.

@vinmagistrado @randahl

Self inflicted economic collapse, flagellation in fact…

@randahl Time to shakedown AMC and the other big theater operators, huh? Guess they haven’t been paying their dues to the Racketeer-In-Chief.
@randahl not just European movies, Prague and other studios will be affected as well. Wednesday was shot in Romania
