My cousin seems to think my fears about Pierre Pollievre taking away women's rights and building concentration camps are overblown. I reminded her that Trump is literally sending US citizens to concentrations camps. No due process, nothing.

Her response?

"They can't just take people off the street. There must be a reason they are taking them."

And this my friends, is how Nazi Germany happened.

I told this to another friend today. And she gave me a lecture on how I am misunderstanding people. These people are mostly good people. They just got hoodwinked into supporting Nazis.

Ding ding ding!!!!

That's the point!

The road to death camps is lined with good people doing nothing

@chu A "good person [who] got hoodwinked into supporting Nazis" is no longer a good person. Sorry for your friend's loss.
@chu Like, there are plenty of earlier points where there's ambiguity and room for disagreement as to whether they're still "a good person making mistakes". But supporting Nazis is way, way past that.
@dalias @chu Agreed. A good person who supports a Nazi is a bad person. Maybe they're redeemable, but currently they're bad.
@chu and the people in El Salvador are also good people. They didn't even get tricked....
@chu And they ARRESTED A JUDGE who "interfered", by asking them questions, noting they didn't have an arrest warrant, and essentially told them "not in my courtroom".

@shaungriffith

No doubt it was the judge's own fault something something something....

DO NOT underestimate people's ability to self justify

@chu @shaungriffith

“Should judges be above the law?” you will be asked.

No, but what law have they broken?

@DavidM_yeg @chu @shaungriffith whoa what is going on in the US.

https://www.reuters.com/legal/wisconsin-judge-arrested-immigration-case-retains-top-conservative-lawyer-2025-04-29/

Federal prosecutors accused Dugan of hindering immigration agents who arrived to arrest Eduardo Flores-Ruiz without a judicial warrant outside her courtroom on April 18. Dugan allegedly tried to help Flores-Ruiz evade arrest by allowing him to exit through a jury door, although agents arrested him outside the courthouse.
The government did not seek to detain Dugan after her arrest and she was released from custody on Friday by a federal magistrate judge in Milwaukee. She is scheduled to enter a plea on May 15.

@shaungriffith @krupo @chu

I know she is accused of being insufficiently cooperative with the administration and their ICE thugs, but specifically, what law do they allege she broke?

@chu She's right.

In Germany, they were Jews.

And here? Well, there's always a reason.

It's just a question of if you want "instilling fear in the population" or "being Jewish" or "having brown skin" to be a reason for being deported.

@chu "they can't just take people off the street"? why not? who would stop them? they control the government.

@wehpudicabok @chu

The nearest witness could put kidnappers under citizen's arrest and shoot them if they attempt to escape.

@LevZadov theoretically, yes. but because the kidnappers are operating on behalf of the US government, anyone who tried that would themselves be labeled a criminal and face similar retaliation
@LevZadov like, don't misunderstand me. i'm not saying people *shouldn't* stand up to those fascists. absolutely, they should! what i'm saying is that the person who said "they can't just take people off the street" was imagining there is some higher law protecting people from government tyranny. that doesn't actually exist, and people need to recognize that, so that they recognize tyranny as it occurs.

@wehpudicabok me when talking to cis people and allistics, ADULTS, and I have to explain that "just because rules exist, that does not mean that the rules are what actually happen."

@LevZadov

@wehpudicabok

There most certainly *is* some higher law protecting people from government tyranny. It is we the people.

@wehpudicabok

Only if they stayed on the scene to be arrested. Even then, the case could be beaten in court with the necessity defense. The kidnappers did not identify themselves. No normal person would assume they we government agents. Real government agents identify themselves and come equipped with the proper warrant. Anyone else, until due process enables them to *prove* they are government agents, is assumed not to be. Ergo, what they are doing is a serious crime, kidnapping. Citizens have, not just the right, but the duty to uphold the law by any means necessary.

ICE raid in Oklahoma City updates: Homeland Security says right house, wrong target

The incident comes as similar raids have ramped up across the U.S., sparking renewed debate over immigration enforcement and community safety.

The Oklahoman

@Johns_priv @wehpudicabok

I missed the part about why she didn't just shoot them as the came through the broken door. Was she not armed?

@LevZadov @wehpudicabok I'm afraid you suffer from hero complex.
First, real life is not like that, and second, if she had done that they would have killed her and her daughters, and then lied about it and covered it up.
Wake up, you live in a country going fast to become a dictatorship.

@Johns_priv @wehpudicabok

I'm afraid you suffer from a cowardice complex. You strike me as the type who would have ratted out Anne Frank to avoid angering the Nazis. We live in a country going fast to become a dictatorship because of cowards like you. Shame on you all.

@[email protected] @[email protected] “And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin's thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn't love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.” -- Aleksandr I. @LevZadov @wehpudicabok No mate, I am European, we don't have guns here.
But I'm also a catalan pro-independence whose name is Jordi, and thus have been dealing with fascists my whole life, something I believe you know nothing about.
And I will keep fighting them through legal means while we have them and other means when we don't.

What you were doing was both victim blaming and being a racist. Own it, reflect on it and do better.

@Johns_priv @wehpudicabok

He lied. He insulted me. He's blocked.

@LevZadov @wehpudicabok it would be great if you were right, but there is factual evidence that that just does not happen. Idealism is great, but it needs to make friends with reality

@mgleadow @wehpudicabok

Reality is nothing but agreed upon illusions.

@LevZadov @wehpudicabok yes, you tell that to the authorities as they haul you away. I'm sure they will stop and marvel at how philosophy can defeat any nefarious state sponsored corruption

@mgleadow @wehpudicabok

Have *you* ever been hauled away? I have. So I know exactly what I'm talking about. In 1967 I was the victim of a COINTELPRO frame up. It's purpose was to stop my organizing resistance to the Vietnam War. I was not the only one. I was totally innocent of the crime of which I was accused. They didn't even plant any evidence. They just checked a box on the form that indicated that they had. They wanted to give me five to seven and a felony conviction. Fortunately, I'm white, so they afforded me the "privilege" of bribing my way down to a misdemeanor and five years probation of which I served two and a half. They shot Fred Hampton through the damn wall. How fair is that?

So I figure that if that's how they're going to treat me when I *obey* the law, why should I obey? I figure the cops are nothing but the gang in blue.

I'm a pot head. That means that for most of my adult life I was a criminal. Now it's legal, so I'm not. Nothing in behavior changed. I smoked when I wanted to, and didn't when I didn't, same as I do today. It was my choice, not the government's. I'm a free person, so like the song says, "Fuck the police." They're not as smart as they think they are.

@LevZadov @wehpudicabok right, so your advice to people was missing "be white, and live 60 years ago"

The current day has a different terror to that of the past.

@wehpudicabok @chu It has to be the rest of us.

@chu I wonder why ACLU might be suing them when the most obvious course of action is to sit back and assume they must have a good reason.
@chu Right-wing have great difficulty in questioning leaders as they prize loyalty and moral purity which your cousin has just displayed

@chu

There's so many mocking ways to handle this from playful sarcasm 'oh, yeah, The State never does anything illegal' to pointed questions about the existence of a Justice Deity who simply doesn't allow it to happen but...

Since it's your cousin...

I don't know, like how do you get the utterly credulous to not be?

@chu @nickrauchen Yep. Due Process and the concept of a Republic (no single person can make decisions without oversight) are two things that Trump is bent on destroying.

Even in the Soviet Union the Politburo (Presidium) would occasionally overrule the Soviet leader.

@chu they don’t even need to be on the street, they can enter your home without a warrant.

Yes, there are “reasons” they are taking those specific people, but they are not legal or good reasons.

@chu yep, biblical stupidity & ignorance. The numbers are against sense & reason. We are entering an age of lies, where cold comfort & misinformation rule our society...
@chu His wife belongs to an American group Moms for Liberty that hates LGBTQ and women's rights so he is in good company
@chu When you tell them that what has already happened is the reason for your stress they don't believe you. I've seen it every time I talk about current events at work.

@chu if one of my cousins said that, I'd reply with one of the following depending on the cousin:

1.) maga fascist: "yes, that's because you have a child's understanding of how governments operate"
2.) youngest & queer: "are you serious? You know the law isn't a physical barrier, right? Are you high right now?"
3.) the rest: "no, in this essay I will...." Followed by an email with academic sources

@chu I don't have access to Spotify to provide the primary source, but maybe send her the Joe Rogan podcast and his view on the matter? The YouTube video which seems to encapsulate the episode is here:

@chu i think the problem people face is that they live under the assumption that since "this is a civilized society" no one will do anything so extremely unreasonable.

And that's why it's important to look at what's in front of you then form an opinion, not form an opinion, and then try to shoehorn what's in front of you to somehow make it fit.

And "there must be a reason" is a shoehorn

@chu The US is Practically there! Trump and his Party certainly are! Thank God for judges with Integrity and Insight-into the Hell this Administration is attempting to create!

@chu sorry, forgot the quotation marks!!!

@chu Someone shared this with me recently, and now it's my turn to pay it forward:

Show your friend. Don't explain why until after she reads it.

Normalcy bias - Wikipedia

@chu

Yeah the "reason" is the people doing the taking are racist, white supremecist cunts.

Same shit we saw in Nazi germany, same shit was saw in East Berlin, same shit we see in China.

@chu
I had heard about a US citizen being arrested/detained for half a day in Florida I think and had heard about the deportation of a couple non-citizen mother's with their citizen children (one who lost access to cancer treatment!), and I recall the non-citizen husband of a citizen being sent to that prison in El Salvador, but I had not heard about a US citizen being sent to El Salvador.

I need to read more about this. Do you have a link to an article?

@chu She or who ever they are ... just another plain IGNORANT soul and why the USA cult was so easy to feed the poison kool-aid...plain dumb and STUPID ...🤔🤨😬🥴😠

See where it got the USA 2025 and Germany way back then FOR SHAME ! 🤬🚨🤬

@chu Your friend would indeed have made an excellent citizen of the Third Reich. She is confusing 'can' (able) with 'may' (allowed). The US regime is doing many things that are not allowed, because they CAN do them.

There is indeed a reason they are taking them: to prove they CAN, despite the law.

@chu the proof that they have a reason to just pick someone off the streets is due process. If they do not have due process, there was no legitimate reason.
