Hundreds of thousands of Computers won't be able to upgrade to Windows 11, but that shouldn't make them eWaste.

Kudos to the @kde team for this amazing initiative!

@kevinrns Very cool resource. I put Ubuntu on my Surface Pro 3. It's absolutely cursed but I kind of love it.

@lovemakeshare

As its linux, it will continue to improve for as long as you're willing to deal with Microsoft hardware choices.

@kevinrns the Pro 3 has served me for a decade, hardware was never the issue. I just wish it had a little more horsepower for web tasks!

@lovemakeshare

Yeah. That was the top hardware choice I meant, that and cameras.

No one could convince them to upgrade the 3s CPU.

@kevinrns

Would be poetic karma of it turns out Microsoft are the ones who make Linux on the desktop a bigger thing, because of this.

@tsvenson

It has, it is. Its huge, multiple stories on multiple non linux sites saying:

"NO NO NO, don't throw out"expiring" Windows 10 laptops and PCs !!"

Its not tens of thousands of computers MS is abandoning, its millions.

Don't throw out a Windows 10 computer, easily make a Mars Rover Level Modern Computer. To use, or share, or give away.

you want it to just work.

Friends of mine know that I've tried for a long time to get confirmation that curl is used in space. We've believed it to be likely but I've wanted to get a clear confirmation that this is indeed the fact. Today GitHub posted their article about open source in the Mars mission, and they now … Continue reading Mars 2020 Helicopter Contributor β†’

That's awesome. Will be great preparation for fall, when Oktober 14 is passed and support for windows 10 ends: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-of-support - but Microsoft will probably, like before, move that date forward at least a few times.

Win 10 is at 53% versus 44% for win 11 according to: https://gs.statcounter.com/os-version-market-share/windows/desktop/worldwide/

In a year https://gs.statcounter.com/os-market-share/desktop/worldwide will be interesting to revisit.

@tsvenson @kevinrns

They certainly convinced me to finally make the switch!

@violetmadder @kevinrns

Cool. And if you don't mind, assuming you are a new Linux user, a few questions:

- How was selecting a distro and experience installing and using it for the things you want to do?
- Did you try more than one distro, including in "live mode" before first install?
- What things have surprised you about using Linux?
- Anything you really really miss on Linux?
- Anything new you found and like on Linux?

@tsvenson @kevinrns

The distro thing was confusing at first but after a while I got the impression it doesn't make all that much of a difference, or won't until I get into things deeper. I ended up just picking Mint xfce to start off with (I'm on a weak laptop).

Biggest surprise I got, was when I tried to change the username and password and something glitched that totally locked me out of the system. That was a bit scary, the idea that one glitch can just bork the whole thing. Fortunately I hadn't put any files on the machine yet, so I could start again from scratch but yikes.

I'm also surprised by other glitches, like the way the wifi keeps going kaput for no apparent reason, and how the system won't go to sleep (it gives an error saying it requires authentication??).

When I did start putting in my files, I was surprised by the character limit to filenames-- and that there is no option to rename the files it's failing to move. That's hugely inconvenient, I had to note down and go find, rename, and move each offending file individually.

It hasn't been very long, so far the main things I miss are small, like my screensaver slideshow and the ability to set music on a sleep timer. Oh and the "troubleshoot connection" button for when wifi acts up.

No doubt there are ways to fix a lot of things via command line but I don't have any fluency in that yet.

@kevinrns linux mint and openmediavault for me.
@kevinrns
I heard there is a Windows emulator that runs on Linux (the trouble is that my favourite game won’t run on Linux, and Missusji is non-technical. She can deal with windoze, but would hate Linux.
Can anyone point me at such software?
