The #rTorrent developer on adding support for webseeds, which is necessary for people wishing to help mirror #InternetArchive items via #bittorrent:

芦Unless the work is sponsored I don't think it will happen anytime soon.禄

How to sponsor it?

@Amgine I don't know. The only mention of sponsored development is on https://github.com/rakshasa/rtorrent/releases/tag/v0.10.0 . Presumably it starts with an email to ask them for a quote.
Release RTorrent release version 0.10.0 路 rakshasa/rtorrent

Thanks to a 3rd party sponsoring development, and recent changes in my personal life, I've started actively developing rtorrent. Some of the recent PR's merged include: libtorrent Significant perf...

@nemobis

I would absolutely chip in on this, but likely cannot afford to pay for it myself.

If someone starts that wagon, I will happily pay for a ride. (Ping me if anyone does!)

@Amgine Yeah, I imagine a sponsor would need to be some org which for whatever reason is very invested on rTorrent/ruTorrent and webseeds at the same time. Perhaps a seedbox seller (where it might be difficult to switch to qBittorrent/transmission/other)? Some obscure research group relying on some ad-hoc data transfer process? Otherwise a grant/donation from some entity or person interested in digital preservation is more likely.

@nemobis

Yes. I am in that latter camp. If enough of us get together and talk about it, we could certainly get this rolling.

@Amgine For donations, I would probably suggest setting up an #OpenCollective "project" donation pot, but that requires a parent collective which donors would be comfortable with absorbing any unspent donations.

@nemobis

Hmm. I *think* I would be okay with this, in principle, since presumably the parent collective would be rtorrent or Archive or similar?

@Amgine If they take the lead on this, yes. But they may not have resources to do so.

@nemobis

<nod> You're saying we need to build an independent org to collect the money, or find one which could end up with the proceeds of our collecting if we do not spend it all.

I do not have the bandwidth (or skills) to organize something. But I can help.

@Amgine Actually we're in luck, rakshasa posted a quote already: 2000 $. Seems reasonable for the value provided.
