Need any more proof that our electoral system is fundamentally flawed? The #NDP and #BlocQuebecois got exactly the same vote percentage. The Bloc get 22 seats and the advantages of Official/Recognized Party status. The NDP are left to lick their wounds.

It's well past time to end first-past-the-post. #Elxn45 #cdnpoli #ProportionalRepresentation #ElectoralReforms

@thejcorn It's not flawed. It's because those votes are concentrated in Quebec.

@politicer Reasonable folks differ! I think it would be better for the country if the seat distribution in the national assembly better reflected the percentage of votes in the nation as a whole.

There are other issues with regional vote concentration resulting in over-representation by a particular party...in Alberta, the Conservative Party got about 65% of the votes, but they have 91% of the seats. Fair enough most Albertans vote blue, but not 9 in 10. Other voices here are underrepresented.

@thejcorn What makes you think PR would stop Quebec from having the Bloc party?

@politicer I didn't say it would; it probably wouldn't. The Bloc can have as many seats as their national popular vote reflects, but if the NDP has the same popular vote across the country, they should have the same number of seats.

Such a system could distribute seats per-province, so all the Bloc's seats (obviously) would come from Quebec's allocation, while the NDP seats would be peppered throughout, depending how many votes they got in each province.
