My opinion of the #fosstodon drama:

It's fair to expect mods to be on the right side of history, and not to have heinous views. And it's fair to call this out. At the same time, this server is run by VOLUNTEERS. The needless attacks, the immediate moves and blocks, and the insane expectation for @mike and @kev to constantly be on top of this and aware of about 500 threads of toots at the same time (and on different platforms) is SO TOXIC. Yall need to CHILL. Everyone is just doing their best.

@Gina you put together what I thought way better than I could. Thanks for that!

@Gina

Yeah this is my view too - having a far right mod is not good. Moderators are representatives of the project. It doesn't matter that moderation is a group thing and auditable

But also the reaction from other servers and users is incredibly toxic, and the move to defederate so quickly without any actual harm is damaging to the fediverse as a whole

@rubenwardy @Gina Is there somewhere I can get a summary of what happened? What are the "heinous views" and how did they come to be known?
@apodoxus @rubenwardy apologies, someone else will have to help you with the links. I've been DM'd a few but I've mostly had to click through threads of comments to find context. Apparently things were said about a wrongful deportation in the US, about LGTBQ+ kids and about the privacy of trans people? The problem is that most Reddit comments have been deleted, so I don't know the specific details either.
@Gina @rubenwardy Hmm, okay, well those are some clues at least. I'll do some googling. Who's the mod in question? kev said something about snowflakes but that was ages ago.
@apodoxus @Gina @rubenwardy In case you didn't find it yet, this is basically the drama as far as I know: https://mastodon.social/@lo__/114370692797365997
And
https://fosstodon.org/@mike/114394345053697948

A bit out of proportion in my opinion, and some of the takes are honestly pretty disingenuous. I don't have to agree with the mod's opinions to think that some of the characterizations and attacks have been unfair, and labeling them as "fascist" or "nazi" isn't warranted, but I suppose other people don't agree.

@[email protected] To be clear, we're happy with the effort that Carrotcypher has put in as a moderator at Fosstodon. @[email protected] @adamsdesk @[email protected]

Fosstodon
@taylor @Gina @rubenwardy Yeah, thanks, but I found it and I agree completely.
@apodoxus @rubenwardy @Gina Here's my take, having investigated and spoken to the mod in question: https://underlap.org/fosstodon-and-authoritarian-behaviour
Fosstodon and authoritarian behaviour

My Mastodon account is on fosstodon.org which has come under fire recently for allegedly harbouring a moderator with extremist views. Wh...

underlap
@underlap @rubenwardy @Gina Yeah, I found the guy and posts eventually. I'm inclined to agree with you. Indeed, the left has been incredibly authoritarian for years and it's highly counterproductive to getting anything done, as we can see *gestures at world*. We need to be organizing and actually helping people in real life, not engaging in online drama.
@rubenwardy @Gina Maybe, and I mean MAYBE, we are in times where people are afraid and you have to be reassuring and clear when you're managing an instance. We get permanent right-wing rhetoric all over the place and in every country. In my opinion, there has been a "cock-up" here and the ‘non-political’ response is no longer sufficient. Toxicity is disdain, not the need for reassurance, and the response may have been slow in coming here 🤔

@rubenwardy @Gina

having a far right mod is not goodIs he actually "far right" or is he just not in complete agreement with what you consider the acceptable political opinion?It doesn't matter that moderation is a group thing and auditableI think it does. The whole point of it being a group thing is to ensure one fringe political stance won't interfere with the freedom of others. There's great value in having a diversity of opinion, even.the reaction from other servers and users is incredibly toxic, and the move to defederate so quickly without any actual harm is damaging to the fediverse as a wholeThis is what people on the fun side of the #Fediverse have been telling everyone for years. But because they are considered "far right", "nazi", "fascist", or any other of the popular means to indicate disagreement, they are defederated anyway without any means to appeal or otherwise change the outcome.

@Gina @mike @kev Yep. Did not read anything about it until now. Will stay until I read if there‘s a real probem. All humans make mistakes. If we‘re not allowed to do that anymore we‘re not human anymore.

@Gina @mike @kev I'm with you here. Free and Open Source Software is different from Free Speech. I appreciate that this community has a focus, and love that the moderation team is keeping that focus on FOSS.

Yes, please do punch a fascist, but do it somewhere else ♥️

There are many other Mastodon communities. Make an additional account, no need to migrate. Use both 🤷

@Gina

I like the recognition that everyone is just doing their best, as they see to do it.

I like holding open some time and space and grace for
@mike and @kev to figure out how to do better

people refer to this kind of post as "tone policing" though because they, too, are trying to do and be their best, but running into this sort of situation is alarming and does demand action, whether from the admins, from everyone else, or, as here and as usual, a mix

@Gina @mike @kev the fediverse is a world where intolerance is not tolerated and where many users take a safe refuge from many attacks. This is how it works. It's not twitter. This safety and trust expectation is built-in and any failure of safety is an important threat for these people. This has to be respected. It is not hard to satisfy. A moderator who has been reported for intolerance must be suspended FIRST and investigated NEXT. Fortunately we're free to move for increased protection.

@f4grx @Gina @mike @kev it will be interesting to see how the next team sets things up.

Im lazy and so havent migrated yet. I like the idea of a reasonably big instance, that I throw money at, to ensure its stability... which is why i came here and havent moved yet.

But all that can't be at the cost of core values, and I have been closely watching the recent events.

@Gina @mike @kev
I was switching instances before this as my situation dictates I need a supportive community in that regard. As a trans woman, I'm marginalised, ridiculed and used as a political pawn. See #wokeagenda and #uksupremecourtruling.
I'm disappointed in the comments that I see about this is a FOSS instance not politics. If the FOSS community is that short sighted then feel free to block me and move on. I'll miss Fosstodon but not the #broligarchy and I don't mean everyone btw.

@cygnusx11 @mike @kev I mean.. it IS a FOSS-oriented instance though? That doesn't mean you can't talk about political topics (a lot of FOSS topics are inherently political), but they just need a content warning.

Idk, why wouldn't this work?

@Gina @mike @kev
I know and I understand that. This is exactly why I'm switching. You've just validated my comment by once again using the line, "this is a (insert interest) instance here". I've aged decades over the last few years just trying to fight for basic human rights and dignity only to have it thrown in my face by a tech community that I actually hold much respect for. It's not fun being sidelined and used as a tool for a binary cause. It's disappointing.
@cygnusx11 @mike @kev sorry I don't understand how one excludes the other? We're a tech community, there's a place for everyone who wants to talk about tech. If you want to talk about politics that's possible too, with CW's. I think we should all support human rights for everyone, incl and especially trans rights at this time, but that isn't the ~main focus~ of this server.
@Gina @mike @kev
Yes, true and I realise I haven't been using CWs with this... sorry, 🙁. I'm leaving #fosstodon after nearly 5 yrs. for many reasons but I'm taking my follows/followers with me as my love of FOSS and tech in general is still there. Maybe I'll find something bad elsewhere but that's the great thing about the Fedi, the ability to move around. I don't feel the support from Fosstodon that I'm getting elsewhere. I guess it's too niche here for my taste...
@cygnusx11 @mike @kev sorry about that, I hope you'll stay and help make this place more inclusive, esp with the new mod team. We can use all the help we can get and an intersectional lens is even more valuable. But if your mind is made up then I wish you all the best at your new instance. 💚
@Gina @mike @kev
Thank you and maybe one day, I'll reactivate my #fosstodon account. I'll still be around as I follow many fosstodon accounts and hashtags. I've even kept my profile details practically the same.
@Gina @mike @kev yup. Fully agree and support @mike and @kev.

@Gina @mike @kev I saw Marc Rebillet in concert last year. It was really memorable. Even if it's not really the type of music I like to listen.
