Nextdoor cold-emailed me, by name, an invite code to a small town in Vermont, a place I have never lived. (I currently live on the other side of the world in Amsterdam.)

According to their front page, "all neighbors are verified" as actually living in their community. 🤨

@0xabad1dea accept it, maybe there will be warplans exchanged 🤣
@0xabad1dea verified with Experian maybe
@0xabad1dea
"Invite code to a town" 😳
@viq to be more clear (if you don't know what Nextdoor is), an invite code to a social media forum only for people who live in that town.
@0xabad1dea
Oooh, I read it as shorthand for "someone who lives next door to me", sending you what sounds like a code to enter a physical town 😂
@0xabad1dea I'm just imagining, going about your day, buying something in a nearby store, suddenly the person behind the counter glancing around to make sure no-one else is near, and leaning towards your "hey, psst! Wanna move? I have a code that could get you into a town in a different part of the world!" and the amount of question marks it would generate in my head would cause them to overflow and start falling out my ears 🤣
@0xabad1dea Attentie Whatsapp buurtpreventie?

@0xabad1dea they sent me a cold email as well.

I sent their email provider a cold abuse complaint.

@rallias did they at least get where you live within a hundred miles or so? 😂
@0xabad1dea I mean, they did have me spot on, didn't make it any less offensive.
@0xabad1dea I got one of those last year, but not with my name. they all go to spam now.
@0xabad1dea This may have changed in the years since, but the email invite used to only be the first step. Once you expressed interest, they sent you a physical postcard with a verification code on it.
@0xabad1dea I got an invitation for a Pittsburgh-area town I've never even visited.

@0xabad1dea that’s weird because I’ve had two invites before just like that. Each for towns in the middle of nowhere USA.

The odd part, I’ve never lived in the US and the email address used wasn’t generic (eg common name at gmail)

@Mcvicar @0xabad1dea Nextdoor email scandal about to be blown wide open, i can tell
