#QuestionOfTheDay oldest movie or OVA you would genuinely put in your top 10 favorite films of all time and still watch now?

@ami_angelwings Vampire Hunter D the original one😌
@ami_angelwings Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is my all-time favorite movie, of any kind, period.

@greyduck @ami_angelwings Superior taste right there. I like using it in my "way to mention more Ghibli flix"

Favorite Miyazaki: Nausicaa
Best Miyazaki: Spirited Away (maybe only just barely over Pricess Mononoke)
Favorite Ghibli: Umi ga Kikoeru
Best Ghibli: The Tale of Princess Kaguya

...aaaaAAAAAAnd now I feel like I have to reread the Nausicaa manga, it's been a hot minute.

@cthellis I just got through a manga reread late last year. Absolutely worth it.

@ami_angelwings Chirin no Suzu (Ringing Bell) from 1978.

(my bad for answering this to the tv series question, sometimes I can't read🙈)

@ami_angelwings Grey: Digital Target

@fraca7 @ami_angelwings Damn, nice pull, and a strong year. On my first tape of anime provided from my friend's college club, just after BGC eps 1+2, and just before the Dirty Pair movie and Megazone 23 Part I

Technically the 2nd anime I watched!

And so far, far gone from any availability. 😭 poor thing

@ami_angelwings might be a bit of a basic answer, but it's probably 12 Angry Men (1957).

@ami_angelwings Heeere we gooooo!!

So glad to see folks mentioning Nausicaa (1984), and certainly that's up there for me.

1984 is the winning year overall due to Beautiful Dreamer, and if you're going to restrict me to one choice I will boost Macross: Do You Remember Love? most, because of Mikimoto and its unavailability until JUST THIS FRICKIN YEAR I HATE YOU HARMONY GOLD

...

--ahem--

Anyway, Dirty Pair: Project Eden is 1986. Boo, so late!

I will never not use any excuse to link this date scene: https://youtu.be/sBmEjZIcrtY?t=30

@ami_angelwings This is kinda cheating because I hardly watch movies anymore, but in any case, I’d watch anything by Ghibli over and over. Between Nausicaa and Totoro, ok, fine: Totoro.
@ami_angelwings there’s plenty of Italian and Argentinian cinema that would fit, too. If only I could remember.

@adriano @ami_angelwings I was thinking much the same thing! I don't watch movies basically at all. At least not really watch them.

But people keep bringing up Nausicaa and oh man, that one is just something special. If I had to pick one oldest movie, I might just lean that way.

@ami_angelwings Experiments in the Revival of Organisms (1940), though it is a difficult film to watch, esp. the infamous dog head segment.
I rewatch it mostly out of morbid fascination.
@ami_angelwings Not all that old, and I don't need to watch The Princess Bride when I can still recite the whole dang thing...

@neia @ami_angelwings Bob Anderson was fantastic. Wish he could have gotten more recognition.

(He’s one of the few that has physically played Darth Vader:))

@ami_angelwings Rashōmon (1950). There are not many films that have genuinely made me change my viewpoint on life, but that is one of them.
@ami_angelwings One of my favourite movies of all time is the original The Day The Earth Stood Still from 1951 so that’s probably my answer.
@ami_angelwings bleach, but it's been revived so not sure if it counts. Fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood is old enough? :)
@jonyua as long as you like to watch the original it counts

@ami_angelwings Slayers (TV series, not OVAs or movies.) The first season aired in 1995.

Darned funny, great characters, and despite its silliness, pretty decent story. (They even surprise you sometimes.) And then it gets just serious enough at the end of each without going gritty or anything in the process.

And you can't help but to love Lina Inverse, lol.

@ami_angelwings Sasuke (1982). 🔥🔥🔥
@ami_angelwings Space Carrier Blue Noah/Thundersub (1979-1980).
@ami_angelwings I'm always down to watch lupin the third ('71 and '77 both)
@ami_angelwings SOAP. While some of it hasn't held up, it's still pretty progressive for a show from the 70s. Jodi's character arc has a few missteps but he's still a great homosexual character who gets to drop some anvils that needed to be dropped.

@herebewonder @ami_angelwings I have actually seen this via one of my local stations that shows a lot of old stuff. It was actually a pretty good show for a weird parody thing, lol. The only way I'll ever watch a soap opera!

It seemed like it ended rather abruptly. Was that intentional?

@nazokiyoubinbou @ami_angelwings

I think it was canceled on a cliffhanger (several, actually). It was kind of a controversial show at the time so I think the network got tired of the complaints or something.

@herebewonder @ami_angelwings Yeah, I forget, but I seem to recall it was quite a cliffhanger in fact.
@ami_angelwings
Cowboy Bebop.
@ami_angelwings
Of course, if you want to go really far back, I have a fond memory for Space Battleship Yamato as well!

@ami_angelwings Mobile Suit Gundam (1978) all day long. It set the stage for everything in the franchise and had a very big impact one anime in general.

I find that many that follow fail to live up to it (Gundams jumping around like ninjas in Naruto saddens me), while others have stood on the shoulders of giants.

Seeing the RX-78-2 for the first time is a bit like seeing the Tie Fighters and X-wings in A New Hope. Can’t be matched.

@ami_angelwings For Top 10, it would have to be Super Dimensional Fortress Macross. But for an even older show that might not make the Top 10, but that I'd still watch and would recommend to anyone, Cutie Honey.
@ami_angelwings Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure OVA

@ami_angelwings Probably YAWARA! A fashionable judo girl! Started back in 1989, it might legit be in my top three.

I'm rewatching it right now, so I could maybe include Attack No 1. in there (1969) depending on if it still holds up or ends up being even more fun the second time.

@literalgrill @ami_angelwings See, now Yawara was not a thing I thought I'd share reference to.
@cthellis @ami_angelwings You know it too? I swear I know so few others who have seen the show!

@literalgrill @ami_angelwings Yeah, I'd gotten some fansubs way back in the day, but it wasn't popular enough for the place I got them from (hole-in-the-wall shops in NYC Chinatown) to keep going, so I was stymied until AnimEigo (my favorite anime distributor from the wayback) announced they were licensing Yawara and accepting pre-orders, back in '07 or so. (Same thing happened with the KOR LaserDiscs. One reason I associate the series together, I guess!)

At any rate I got and loved the 1-40 set they made, but it too didn't do well enough, so they didn't license further.

I found the Live-eviL fansubbers doing the series and was able to slowly collect more when they picked it back up, until FINALLY getting the whole series!

I beg Discotek every con to rescue this 😝

@literalgrill @ami_angelwings I asked Robert Woodhead about it at Otakon Q&As, but he said Yawara (or any long series) were things they wouldn't approach as Kickstarter projects.

But maybe now that AnimEigo is under new management it might be possible.

Here's to hope! The world needs a little more fashionable judo in it.

@cthellis @ami_angelwings Sadly, I have heard that there may be a bit of am licensing hell involved in Yawara, which is part of why other companies haven't tried to pick it up. I hope that's just an untrue rumor, but it certainly does suck a great deal!

It's such a lovely show and I wish I could more easily show it to other people. Perhaps when Live-eviL is done with their full Bluray remastering dealio of their fansubs, I'll just host a watch on Fedi somehow!

@literalgrill @ami_angelwings It wouldn't be shocking. But AnimEigo got it in 2008, which feels recent enough to not be in a confused state. If the only reason they didn't continue was "it was too expensive to go further" then you'd think as long as a company thinks they can make the moneys work...

@ami_angelwings Well, SDF Macross is still my favourite anime, period. And M*A*S*H is still my favourite TV show.

So, uh, SDF Macross and M*A*S*H.

@ami_angelwings Scrolling back by score (at least a 9/10) and stopping off at TV anime (and/or a long enough OVA series) while over-extending on age would take me to...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjXJrkxQeAE (Yawara - 1989) or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xUHBABuuGDI (Kimagure Orange Road - 1987)

I am not positive either definitely WOULD hit my Top 10 TV series, though...?

Hm.

SB, Chihaya, Rakugo, 3-gatsu, PMMM, Kyousougiga... There are a lot that definitely rank higher.

But I feel like I can squeeze a Top 10 for OTHER Madoka, just due to nostalgia-perfection, and total $$$ spent on KOR cells. 😝

@ami_angelwings Movies, we'd be talking a WAY different story. 😛
@cthellis that's tomorrow

@ami_angelwings The Vision of Escaflowne
@ami_angelwings Patlabor has been my favourite since like what, 8 years old? Little me had good taste, especially considering I was way too young to follow the office politics then.

@ami_angelwings Probably "Marchen Awakens Romance". It's not the greatest but I have a soft spot for it

Other than anime, maybe "Air Crash Investigation"?? It's still ongoing and probably won't die any time soon though lol. But sometimes I watch the older episodes (especially because some are available for free in YouTube/Pluto TV. The licenses are messy)

@hako_aiko i was obsessed with this show a couple of years ago after i saw clips of it on youtube xD
@hako_aiko it's weird cuz i've never heard of it but it had an english dub and everything and people seem to be very fond of it
@ami_angelwings ReBoot (1994)
@speckledlemon @ami_angelwings Great show, though I kind of wish the silliness and etc had gone on for longer before it went dead serious and gritty.
