Lenovo Cuts the Windows Tax and offers Cheaper Laptops with Linux Pre-installed

Lenovo is doing something that many aren't.

It's FOSS News
@itsfoss goddamnit. I recently bought a Lenovo and the Linux ones were all over my budget, so had to pay the Windows tax. Knew I should have waited.

@bluetea @itsfoss

Next time you should have a look at refurbished computers. My experience with that is very good.

Save money and not bad for our environment ...

@Harald @itsfoss I've been using hand-me-ups from my kids for years, replacing batteries and uaing an external keyboard when the keys are worn out. And eking every last bit of mileage out of the old gaming machine I built years ago using lightweight linux. I wanted a quality new build for once.

@bluetea @itsfoss

I can understand that - but if you have the right shop you can order it with a new keyboard (as example).

And the Thinkpads (best computer for Linux) are often in a excellent condition - because they was used in offices on the desktop with external keyboard, monitor and so on ...

But I can understand: Sometimes we need something new just for ourselves - it's good for the soul and totally okay. 🙃

@itsfoss semi-rare lenovo w. my yoga c740 is made of metal plates and will never die but it was ridiculously expensive for a shittily-specced laptop. does have touchscreen and pen support though, very thin but not easily upgradeable
@easterman They like to solder RAM now. 😓
@itsfoss only Canada and USA? :'(
@SomeAnoTooter @itsfoss sh*t. I remember hyped when I heard there would be laptops with suse 20 years ago, but never in my country 🤦‍♂️
@SomeAnoTooter Check with your regional Lenovo website, maybe they offer Linux on laptops?

@itsfoss I prefer laptops without any OS. They are rare, but they are out there. I used to prefer ones with Windows, but I fell in love with Ubuntu few years ago and now it's the first thing I install on my laptops.

I don't know why people transition relatively easily from Windows to MacOS, but something like Ubuntu is so alien to them even though it's almost the same damn transition as it is to MacOS. Even the dock is there...

@itsfoss glad that they are offering linux pre-installed, especially because for some people its the hardest part and if they can make everything to work, or at least make it easier to use out-of-box for the user, then its really good! And they can save money not choosing windows either!

For me, advanced user, I wish they would offer laptops without OS, so I can do my own installation without forcibly paying for the windows which I dont want or need

Hopefully in the future we see more brands

@itsfoss In Finland a few models appear to have the option of no OS, but unfortunately no Linux options.
@CosmoCoo @itsfoss I just bought an E14 with pre-installed Ubuntu in Finland, and it looks like one can get at least some of the T and X series with Ubuntu.
@CosmoCoo @itsfoss I got my T14s G4 without an OS in Finland some months ago. I could've chosen Linux too.
@harald @itsfoss Good to know. The OS filters on Lenovo's website didn't have any Linux options when I checked right now and I assumed they would be accurate. Silly me!

@CosmoCoo

@itsfoss @grb090423

For many countries the OS filter does not work, you need to find the customize option and check each interesting (#Thinkpad) model. I wrote about it at https://mastodon.social/@timojyrinki/113635736674245726

See also #Ubuntu Finland's page https://ubuntu-fi.org/kaupalliset-palvelut/tietokoneet-ja-laitteet/

These #certified models have been available for years, and still many pay the windows tax and might get incompatible components, do not know about the availability, so keep on spreading the word!

@itsfoss I'm not sure about other countries but #Dell AU/NZ customer support is apparently happy with installing Linux on any laptop before shipping it if you arrange in advance, according to what they told me.

@itsfoss

Ah ah China trade war with US ?? 🤔

@itsfoss and a community project is looking into building EU OS, an OS based on fedora Linux to create an alternative to Windows and MacOS. This could in the long run mean more software independent of the US. Exciting times for Linux.

@itsfoss It's not a tax, it's a license fee. Huge difference, even if the result may be similar.
@itsfoss been running Linux Mint for past few months on my Lenovo Yoga that's from 2022 (I think). Been a pretty good experience so far.
