My frozen home somewhere near Halti Fjell, Norway, in 2023, during my six-week solo ski tour. For next winter, I’m planning to upgrade from what I call this ‘coffin-style’ tent to a dome. One of the biggest reasons is space—it’s nearly impossible to cook safely inside this tent during a storm.

@JakeHikes we found that in Patagonia. Lightweight is great until you are tentbound during a blizzard. Some good but expensive lightweight dome tents around these days. Originally we used Terra Nova Quasars (3.4kg) but recently invested in a 2 person Samaya 2.5 (1.7kg)
@[email protected] yeah, if I had unlimited budget there would probs be more options. Though, my experience with light weight gear is that they are not as durable and I tend to break stuff quite a lot 😅 but definitely will check these options out! Thanks!
@[email protected] have you used the Samaya in winter or in cold conditions? How does it handle the condensation given that it is a single wall tent? And lastly do you have the vestibule addon for it?
@JakeHikes yes we have the vestibule which is great for expeditions but we don't bother for overnight trips. Condensation hasn't been a problem so far in cold and dry conditions but will need managing if a still night with no wind.
okay, this is good to hear. Though, I've never slept in a tent where there is zero condensation, so this is not a big issue. Can the tent and vestibule be pitched together, or do they need to be pitched separately?
@JakeHikes They need to be pitched together
Have the Orión II Extreme, but the weight is 3.3 Kg
The weight is not super big of an issue in the winter and since I might change my pulka for a lighter Era Pro from Fjellpulken, I can manage a bit more heavy tent. The most important features, at least for now, are the ease of setting it up alone and the ability to cook inside it. It seems like Orion has huge vestibules on two sides, so it definitely goes into my list! Do you have experience from using it in the winter or setting it up alone?
Setting up alone is a little tricky but with some experience it works. Used it in temperatures around -5 C without any problems. Will also works in colder regions. Good materials, good heigh inside.
