Hands off our cycling infrastructure!

@ellie THIS IS SO EXICTING! DAMN!

@ellie

Amazing news! Great work to everyone who fought so hard over this! Keep it up!

Sadly we in #yeg may need some guidance from you folks soon as we currently have a rural MLA overstepping their bounds and trying to meddle with urban civic infrastructure projects too...

@Daveography @ellie

This is today's discussion topic on CBC's Alberta at Noon.

The MLA's opening argument (re jurisdiction) seemed to go along the lines of that provincial highways connect to Edmonton/Calgary roads, soooo … 🙄🙄🙄

@Daveography @ellie

Ah, just realised the MLA was Devin Dreeshen, he of MAGA-hat wearing infame.

Seems like a legit expert on jurisdiction, amirite??!? 🙄

@likelyjanlukas @ellie

For a government that really raises a stink over a higher-order government's perceived meddling, they sure like to meddle in the affairs of lower-order governments themselves.

@likelyjanlukas @ellie

I can't really listen in now, but I'm glad it's my Councillor speaking against him on the show. She's fantastic.

Also heard Dr. Markland called in to the show. Another great and well-respected voice (and friend).

@Daveography

Exactly so. They're constantly overreaching their authority at every level. 🙄

That's somehow the fault of the feds tho, amirite???!? 🙄😂

@ellie

@likelyjanlukas @Daveography @ellie to be fair, just this once, in this case it kinda actually is P.Trudeau's fault that our constitution doesn't carve out any kind of independence from provincial interference in municipal affairs....

@megmac

I haven't read them since I did my masters but I don't recall such clarity in *any* of the many BNA Act iterations over the years, so an understandable omission.

(My fave BNA Act is the shortest: it is basically agreeing that Canada is allowed to make new provinces if it wishes. 😂)

@Daveography @ellie

@likelyjanlukas @Daveography @ellie it is understandable yeah, but 1982 would have also been a very reasonable time to reconsider whether municipalities needed more consideration (Toronto was 3 million people!), and updating it has since become impossible, so it is at the very least a very real missed opportunity.

@megmac

I completely agree! There's also the issue of statistics -- constitutionally they are solely the domain of the feds yet for reasons of expediency (and the need to account for estates of the deceased in a timely manner) vital stats became a provincial activity. But this is by need, NOT defined jurisdiction. 😂
