Canberra Press Gallery: The issue that matters most to voters in Western Sydney is the price of eggs.

Meanwhile, in actual Western Sydney… #AusPol #AusVotes #AusElection

@ajsadauskas yeh, Coles & Woolworths looks like that down here.

Meanwhile, the Asian and Middle-Eastern (and Foodworks) grocers all have eggs piled to the ceiling.

It's not about a lack of eggs, it's about Coles & Woolworths squeezing egg producers when they're already under pressure

@sortius @ajsadauskas I've seen the egg section empty in our local "Friendly Grocer" shop just once this year. Restocked by the morning. It's definitely ColesWorth as you say.
@pelicangut @ajsadauskas yep. I think Aldi has been without eggs for maybe 2 weeks. They secured a new supply pretty quickly, just put the price up and we deal with it

@sortius @pelicangut @ajsadauskas Yeah I’d have to agree that the other non-ColesWorth supermarkets here (ACT) aren’t having much of a problem.

(Says the parent of a child who consumed 20 eggs in one day)

@troberts @pelicangut @ajsadauskas hehehe, not looking forward to that with my son!!!! But, yes, my kids love their eggs

@pelicangut @[email protected] @ajsadauskas Aldi, Coles and woolies have been empty many time this year. The IGA a little more reliable, but only the expensive options. Our egg delivery subscription guy was also out of stock for a few weeks leading up to Easter.

It is a little more than the duopoly pulling it over us.

@LovesTha @ajsadauskas hmmmm. It might then be more a case of suppliers. My local gets eggs from about 15 minutes down the road. ColesWorth mostly has supply from major companies.

@ajsadauskas

Y'know, ya don't have to eat eggs.

And if H5N1 reaches pandemic level (which becomes more likely by the day given everything being done by the Trump regime to help it along), no eggs are going to be the least of our problems.

@pewnack @ajsadauskas My comment was more a reference to sections of the Australian media that want to regurgitate the "cost of eggs" narrative from the US election.

Let me give a couple of examples.

Here's 2GB's Mark Levy interviewing Peter Dutton earlier this year: "Yeah, exactly. I get messages here on this programme, Mr Dutton, from listeners who say, ‘well, all we keep hearing is the Treasurer saying that, ‘oh well, we’ve brought inflation under control. Look at what we’ve done to the economy”. And the point they make to me is: ‘have they walked into the local grocery store and done the weekly shop because everybody’s prices of everything is going up’ – petrol, groceries, eggs. I mean, it’s all there and there for everybody to see."

Murdoch's Sky News has trotted out a handpicked supposed ordinary voter from Western Sydney who is supposedly concerned about the price of eggs.

Source: https://www.skynews.com.au/australia-news/politics/thinking-of-starting-to-raise-our-own-chickens-voter-pushed-to-extreme-measures-as-costs-of-fresh-produce-becomes-unbearable/news-story/3ac548f84106d939fae065b3d0beaf68

As usual, our ABC is jumping on the News Corp bandwagon: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-03-26/why-are-eggs-so-expensive-in-australia-us-donald-trump/105091068

I'm sure you can find more examples.

So the narrative News Corp and others in the Australian political media are so confidently pushing is that the politicians (especially Labor) are out of touch with ordinary voters in Western Sydney.

And the big issue supposedly on every voter's mind in Western Sydney is the price of eggs.

That the people of Parramatta and surrounds are deeply upset by the price they're paying for their eggs.

And the Murdoch press are so deeply in touch with the local zeitgeist they know this is the big issue.

Well, as an actual voter living in actual Western Sydney, I find it somewhat amusing.

Because *WHAT BLOODY EGGS*?!

No-one is worried they're paying too much for eggs, when there's often none in store to buy!

And here's the funny thing.

Had any of these Dutton stenographers so much as stepped foot inside a Coles or Woolies in Western Sydney these past few months, there's an above-average chance they would have said: "Huh. There's no eggs here."

Because *WHAT BLOODY EGGS*?!

Peter Dutton MP - Federal Member for Dickson

@aj @ajsadauskas

I know, Dutton is literally repeating Trump's campaign on egg prices.

@pewnack @ajsadauskas It's disingenuous, much in the same way Dutton's claim that people in Melbourne are scared to visit the local shops: https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal/victorians-afraid-to-go-to-the-shops-because-of-rising-crime-dutton-20250421-p5lt6u.html

Which I'm sure is news to most Melburnians.

Victorians afraid to go to shops because of rising crime: Dutton

Eight years after warning that Victorians were afraid to go to restaurants, the opposition leader said they felt unsafe going to the shops as criminal incidents rose by 20 per cent in 12 months.

The Sydney Morning Herald

@aj @ajsadauskas

Everything Dutton says is disingenuous or an outright lie.

I mean, he used to be a Queensland cop. What more do you need to know?

@aj @pewnack @ajsadauskas I’d still like to know what’s the go with the au pairs.
@aj @pewnack @ajsadauskas He's such a creep. We haven't forgotten his "African gangs" bullshit.

@timrichards @aj @pewnack @ajsadauskas

Turnbull said he was a thug and wholly unfit for PM. I actually agree with a Liberal on that point.

@Godfrey642 @timrichards @aj @ajsadauskas

Oh he's definitely a bully. It's in his nature.

@timrichards @pewnack @ajsadauskas It's amazing how quickly Dutton's supposed Sudanese gang crime wave went away as soon as Matthew Guy lost that election in a landslide 😒
