Four years ago we introduced this #curl graph
@bagder Any idea if it will be included in the Dragonfly mission to Titan (though that would be a moon not a planet...)
@ben @bagder They are all "worlds". Planet definition shouldn't matter. It will be three worlds that curl is used on ;)
@matejpp @ben @bagder could rename the graph for simplicity?

@matejpp @ben @bagder No No don't go down that slippery slope, stick with the standard definition of "whole of reality".

This becomes incredibly important because a lot of licenses grant you "worldwide" rights.

@matejpp @ben @bagder extending the concept to the many worlds theory, aka the multiversum, implies that a single world/universe/cosmos/reality is simply a coherent set of possible realities (or facts).

@matejpp @ben @bagder the question of software licensing across different realities of course is tricky.

So curl places no "worldwide" restrictions on its use but if you cross into another reality where curl is GPL-3 how does that affect your license and who will believe you?

@juliank things heating up in the open source licensing AU fandom
@juliank @matejpp @ben @bagder
All these worlds are curl's, except Europa. Attempt no GETs there.
@bagder I suppose if you instead ask "Number of computers running curl outside of earth", it would already be too many to count?
@roseen it would be really hard to get an accurate number...
@bagder @roseen I know for certain of around a dozen LEO and GEO satellites that actively use curl

One of the CLPS lunar lander program contestants used curl pretty heavily on their lander though sadly they went bankrupt before getting a chance to land on the moon
@bagder β€œNo new planets added for four years. Is curl losing its appeal?”
I'm mostly a bit miffed that #curl hasn't measurably been on the moon yet πŸ˜‚

@bagder

Who knows if someone uploaded the source code to the Trisolaris system or wherever? Hmm or maybe some alien species developed their own version in Rust based on earth's code.

We really don't know.

@bagder - wouldn't you expect that any of the soft landing moon probes have it installed?
@resingm @bagder I don't think the moon qualifies as a planet
@can @bagder - that's for sure. But the moon is already a rocky celestial body that is significant enough to be perhaps considered by this statistic.
@bagder The moon isn't a planet, but you could modify the graph to be "terrestrial bodies". 😁
@bagder how does it feel to have written code running on another planet
@bagder is it running there with ridiculously high timeouts?
@bagder And Space is closer to Mars then you might think

@bagder

What if the graph begun at the beggining of time (1970) and started at 0 planets?

@bagder Based on explosive growth in usage area around 2021 you should be able to raise billions in VC.

@bagder

Nothing on the Moon? πŸ˜‰πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

@simonzerafa since when is the moon a planet?

@bagder

True, I was just thinking of other celestial bodies where curl might be found.

@bagder They have used ALSA on Mars already... are you sure there's no curl (or at least libcurl) there?
@wonka maybe I should make a graph about it? Wait, I already did...
@bagder how similar is the one for ffmpeg?
@bagder What about number of celestial bodies running curl?
@bagder Which system on Mars is using it? A Rover?
@crash_override they don't say how or where it was used, only that that it was used
@bagder But why do you need curl on the Mars? There are no webservers on Mars, are there?
@js @bagder not even https://www.mars.com/ ? 😞

@bagder

This is a perfect example of why I really, really, really hate the placement of that "HIDE" button 😑

@bagder @catsalad

You are never going to get venture capital that way ;-)

@bagder heh, is the one for number of spacecraft too? cuz that number would be pretty wild. i bet all the starlink satellites, and the space telescopes are running it
@bagder plus almost certainly all the gps and weather sats!
