[1/2] 𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝕋𝔼ℕ: Another cover, 𝗧𝘂, 𝗦𝗼𝗹𝗼 𝗧𝘂 was written by Felipe Valdés Leal, a Mexican song writer, in 1949. There have been several covers of this song, but the most memorable, in my opinion, was Selena’s version from the 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙛 𝙔𝙤𝙪 album. It originally was made for the movie 𝘿𝙤𝙣 𝙅𝙪𝙖𝙣 𝘿𝙚𝙈𝙖𝙧𝙘𝙤 released in 1995 with Marlon Brando, Johnny Depp, & Faye Dunaway.

[2/2] When Selena recorded this song, she was sick, so her voice had a bit more raspy tone to it. She hesitated in recording because she didn’t want it to sound bad, but after her dad pushed her to give it a try, it turned out to be perfect and the hoarse voice blended well with the ranchera / mariachi style of the song.

𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝔼𝕃𝔼𝕍𝔼ℕ: This was the last single from Selena’s self titled album, 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙖. 𝗕𝗲𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗼𝘀 is a cumbia track where it talks about needing your significant other’s kisses, all day, every day and wanting to be told you’re their only one. It sounds very playful and fun. Based off the Netflix series, it sounds like the song was originally going to be in a bit slower tempo. On this compilation, the 𝗖𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗿 𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗹𝗲𝘆 was created and included. A.B. Quintanilla III remixed 𝗔𝗺𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝗱𝗼, 𝗦𝗶 𝗨𝗻𝗮 𝗩𝗲𝘇, & 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗟𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿 into an acoustic version of the songs in one medley. [1/2] 𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝕊𝔼𝕍𝔼ℕ𝕋𝔼𝔼ℕ: Another two songs, 𝗗𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗲 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝗤𝘂𝗲 𝗘𝘀𝘁𝗲𝘀 / 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗔𝗿𝗲 is a collaboration between Selena and the Barrio Boyzz. This song was originally included in Barrio Boyzz’s album of the same name. It was also included on Selena’s 𝘼𝙢𝙤𝙧 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙝𝙞𝙗𝙞𝙙𝙤 and then an English version was included on the album 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙛 𝙔𝙤𝙪. The English version still had Selena’s Spanish vocals but replaced Barrio Boyzz with English vocals.

𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝔼𝕀𝔾ℍ𝕋𝔼𝔼ℕ: 𝗦𝘂𝗸𝗶𝘆𝗮𝗸𝗶, or it’s actual Japanese name, 上を向いて歩こう (Ue o Muite Arukō) which translates to “I Look Up as I Walk”, is today’s song. It’s on the self titled album, 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙖. This was originally a Japanese song performed by Kyu Sakamoto. There have been several covers of this song, but Selena Y Los Dinos recorded a Spanish translated version from Janice-Marie Johnson lyrics. The music remained mostly unchanged. This became a really popular song and honestly is very soothing and relaxing.

It was re-released as 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗮 𝗔 𝗠𝗶 for the album 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙖 𝙔 𝙎𝙪𝙨 𝙄𝙣𝙞𝙘𝙞𝙤𝙨, 𝙑𝙤𝙡. 𝙄𝙑. This album is also very rare as they no longer sell it. You can hear a very young Selena singing. I came across this song while watching the 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙚𝙣𝙖 movie and haven’t been able to get it out of my head. We need it on streaming ASAP!

I remember being in my teen years, listening to this song and really feeling like I lost the love of my life. HA! As part of the 20 Years of Music, 𝙑𝙚𝙣 𝘾𝙤𝙣𝙢𝙞𝙜𝙤 was released with a couple extra tracks, one being a 𝗡𝗼 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿 (𝟮𝟬𝟬𝟬 𝗠𝗶𝘅). 𝗡𝗼 𝗤𝘂𝗶𝗲𝗿𝗼 𝗦𝗮𝗯𝗲𝗿 was also included in the official Latin album for the 1996 Summer Olympics, 𝙑𝙤𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙐𝙣𝙞𝙙𝙖𝙨.

I also remember hearing my dad sing it while he was cooking one day. He’s never sung Selena songs, but somehow he knew the words to this song. She recorded 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗠𝘆 𝗕𝗮𝗯𝘆 and included it on her album. Later, EMI Latin wanted Full Force to do an R&B remix to the song. Full Force then agreed to do backing vocals but ultimately EMI chose Full Force’s version of the song over Selena’s.

She mistakes the girl for the guy’s girlfriends when in reality it’s his sister. It’s a fun Mexican cumbia with influences of Colombian and South America music. This song was remixed as part of the 𝙀𝙣𝙖𝙢𝙤𝙧𝙖𝙙𝙖 𝘿𝙚 𝙏𝙞 remix album. The remix changed the sound to more of a “bouncy” cumbia. #Selena

Chris was already contributing to the music at this point and they secretly were dating. I don’t think the song was specifically for him, but it’s crazy how 5 years later, she would be murdered. My favorite is when she performed it for her 𝙇𝙞𝙫𝙚! album.

𝔻𝔸𝕐 𝕋ℍ𝕀ℝ𝕋𝕐: Originally released on 𝙀𝙣𝙩𝙧𝙚 𝙖 𝙈𝙞 𝙈𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙤 but later slightly remixed & changed to fit her live performance style, it was re-released on 𝘿𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙢𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙛 𝙔𝙤𝙪, 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗼 𝗟𝗮 𝗙𝗹𝗼𝗿 was the signature Selena song. The song has gone 9x Platinum in the US. Selena would sometimes get tired of performing the song & would sometimes just tell the band to change up the set list because she wasn’t singing it.
