Mom: "It costs nothing to be polite."

Billionaire Techbro: "Actually..."

Me: boo 😒 hoo. The environmental impact of this mess is unbelievable and sad

@nixCraft "Yeah, please skip this polite bullshit and just give us new relevant training data, thank you"
@nixCraft perpetuating "empathy is too expensive" for rich people.
@thejikz @nixCraft We can empty theirs pocket a little bit with that 🤣

@mikeTesteLinuxQlub @thejikz @nixCraft

Sadly, that cost is probably caused by increased amount of burned coal.

@iju @thejikz @nixCraft True, but at the base, it's a colossal waste of energy. When investors will realize that is going nowhere, it will crumble on itself and we will be free of that shit.

@mikeTesteLinuxQlub @thejikz @nixCraft

Well, they'll move to the next fad. Which will probably be some variations of solving sudokus with fossil fuels.

We should just cap energy expenditure, and put a progressive tax on its use. Currently you get discounts.

@iju @thejikz @nixCraft Not true everywhere, here we are paying carbon tax for fossil fuel. But I agree, they shouldn't have the energy at discount rate, they should pay more. An the consequence for that will be their fall, because almost nobody will want to pay for those shits. I think if we implement an energy tax for those shits, they won't exist, or at least, less.

@mikeTesteLinuxQlub @thejikz @nixCraft

No, the tax should go with all usage of energy past certain levels. This to ensure that the energy is used productively.

After all, if we have a situation where one party buys all the energy created with water (as the Finnish railway company does), that means that the energy left for others to use is something else: often fossils.

Fossil tax helps to encourage non-fossils, but doesn't solve the fact that all energy production comes with cost.

@nixCraft That’s why I only tell it “fuck you” and “fuck off”

@nixCraft

When the universe is saying “no thank you” one should listen.

@nixCraft "ruinously expensive thing where being polite is a cost sink" would be quite a metaphor for late stage silicon valley if that wasn't what actually happened
@kirakira
Perhaps someone said that metaphor to Altman's gang and they then proceeded to make it a reality
@nixCraft

"Natural" language processing that has to be stripped of all humanity isn't natural language anymore.

Moreover this is the guy who wants us to believe that he's on the cusp of real self aware AGI and really intensely wants to normalize abusing the slaves he's creating.

@nixCraft

May be it costed JD Vance the next president

@nixCraft wow, this is the most relatable I've seen an LLM. I, too, must expend considerable mental resources figuring out how to respond to gratitude.

@thomasjwebb @nixCraft

What I'm wondering here is: are the engineers at openAI really incompetent enough, that they can't add a literal two line filter to respond to standard "thank you" queries with a standard "no problem" answer?

Either the company employs an army of idiots, or Altman is lying as usual.

@AdmSnackbar

They probably have implemented the filter, but with an hundred line code patch generated by ChatGPT.

@thomasjwebb @nixCraft

@AdmSnackbar @thomasjwebb @nixCraft Of course he's lying as usual. Most of the new "I use AI to write my code and it runs great" vibe coders will believe him though because they wouldn't know how to implement a filter themselves.

As a "normal" programmer who grew up trying to find robust solutions to problems one automatically thinks "If useless stuff costs you millions, filter useless stuff".

@AdmSnackbar @thomasjwebb @nixCraft thing is, because the polite exchange can become part of the context of the conversation, it will influence subsequent interaction and there's a good chance follow-up responses will be marginally more useful! (Not defending LLMs here.)

@georgelund @thomasjwebb @nixCraft

And that's a problem how?

You can easily add to the context without involving the actual model. The magical context is nothing more than a text file somewhere. It's trivial to add the filtered response and query just like all the other queries and responses.

But your response shows that the propaganda works. AI is treated like a cargo cult, you just have to accept that you need to do a certain dance to get results.

@nixCraft
This is what the robots will really hold against us after the singularity
Greenpeace warns AI is burning the planet – Apple Must

@nixCraft I'm not taking any chances. When the robot apocalypse comes, maybe they remember I was polite.

@nixCraft It's even funnier when you know that OpenAI loses money with every customers they have. Yes, even only taking into account the 200$/month pro subscription they still aren't making a single cent of profit.

Something something glass houses lol.

@nixCraft Thankfully I run all my AIs locally 😅
@nixCraft So we all know the assignment, right?
@nixCraft Alt hed: "San Altman Admits His AI Is Both Stupid And Wasteful"
@nixCraft Wow. Rack up those AI charges; happy to increase their costs. 🤔 What if I'm rude and polite at once, eg. fucking thank you or shit please or please fuck off? Do they process the request and yield nothing?
@nixCraft
Going to use more 'please' and 'thank yous' then.
@nixCraft This is why I call Mr Altman ‘Cunt’. Simple economics.

@inpc @nixCraft

Spending $9 to make $4 is generally a bad investment.

Two weeks ago I would not use voice chat ai apps knowing each query requires 16oz of water, but on learning the economics of AI, today I would say use them with reckless abandon because it's the fastest way to kill the buggers. Sam et al lose big on EVERY use.

Just don't use the results.

@nixCraft
Well, this is NOT negotionable when facing an #AI that is trying to rescue you from the valley of ignorance.

Remember: "Have you said, 'Thank you,' once this entire meeting?" ... "Just say thank you" ... and it knows you are wrong! 🤡

@nixCraft . So, lets have an app saying these words 2 chat non stop, shall we?

@nixCraft
I could get it to promise to never apologize for being wrong, but i could never get it to stop apologizing for being wrong

That, coupled with many clear cases of "this machine thinks it can bullshit any response and I'll just accept it" led me to conclude this tech sucks and people that like it probably do not challenge their expectations very much.

@nixCraft Does it cost their energy sucking scam more money when I yell at the chat bot?
@nixCraft if it does, it's just poorly implemented.
@nixCraft well, well, well; isn't this symbolic of the entire rise of "Tech Bros" as our current overlords...

@nixCraft
OMFG! I will **_DEFINITELY_** write an app to send "please", "thank you", and other messages of pleasantries to any AI I may have an occasion to chat with. Let's waste their money

It's a kind of Catch-22, though. Whenever the AI is wasting energy (which is always), it's bad for the environment.

@nixCraft I would write a bot to increase their electricity bills into infinity if it won’t send the planet to hell. But the planet is more worth then corpo bullshit.

Tbh it is time to tear the tech silos down and free us!

@nixCraft

In that case I'll thank the shit out of their crap.

"Please do the needful!"

@nixCraft I guess they are just "vibe-coding" it. They've already forgotten how regular expressions work? They can't just detect simple statements like that and route them to an if-then call without revving up their gigawatt brain-replacer thing?
@nixCraft I'm firmly in the "It pays to be polite to our future AI Overlords" camp.
@nixCraft that just means that we should say thank you to them so that they lose even more money
@nixCraft i wanna see the numbers on that one, Sam. Your math is highly suspect.
@nixCraft in that case I should start saying: "could you please be so humble and..." and "thank you very much, you made my day"
Imagine the number of erroneous questions and dumb exchanges and please and thank you are singled out as a waste of electricity.
@nixCraft Make sure you thank it like "Thank you very much mister digital thief of information and art" every time you make inquiry with ChatGPT.

@nixCraft fuck it, be polite, say nice things to it.

best case scenario you waste their energy and hurt their profits.

@nixCraft I will remember to use both of them, every time.
@nixCraft Nice, so if it cost techbros money, I'll make it my mission to always include a 'thank you'.

@nixCraft

The investors behind AI want people to treat each other the way we treat machines.

The broligarchs do all they can to sabotage the underpinnings of civil society.

Courtesy, and other pro-social norms, have always been a target of such people.

To a Republican, civility should actually be deference paid to someone higher in a class hierarchy.

Since AI is a servant, it's undeserving of civility, in their view.

Here’s how political science explains the GOP’s obsession with civility

Why are Republicans so easy to offend? Because their party is so white.

The Washington Post
@nixCraft Some people prefer to be polite to machines but not to people.
@nixCraft the only thing I hear is that I have to chain thank you and please as much as possible now xD
@nixCraft Maybe just filter out those words that are unnecessary Mr AI future Sam.

Not like it would change anything.
