Noem also demanded info “regarding each #student #visa holder’s maintenance of at least the minimum required coursework to maintain nonimmigrant student status.”

“The failure to comply with the student records request will be treated as a voluntary withdrawal,” Noem wrote in the letter.

Sarah Kennedy-O’Reilly, a #Harvard spox, said the #university was aware of the letter, which she said “follows on the heels of our statement that Harvard will not surrender its independence or relinquish its constitutional rights. We continue to stand by that statement.”

#Trump has threatened to withhold federal #funding to those institutions over the issues. Rights advocates have condemned what they call an assault on #FreeSpeech & #AcademicFreedom.

US #law [already] requires #universities to report donations from foreign sources exceeding $250k in a year.

In a letter to #Harvard President Alan Garber, Trump’s Dept of *#Education* said Harvard made "incomplete & inaccurate" disclosures between 2014 and 2019.

"Today's records request is the #Trump administration's first step to ensure #Harvard is not being manipulated by, or doing the bidding of, foreign entities," *#Education* Secy #LindaMcMahon said in a statement. The letter cited NO EVIDENCE to show that was happening.

Harvard said it has filed such reports for decades "as part of its ongoing compliance with the #law."
