You don't get these kinds of locations at conventions, you just don't. If you want rich environmental portraits you need to scout locations and plan. This is a herculean team effort between upwards of 20 different artists including actors/models, costume/wardrobe, makeup/special FX, animal handers, location management, craft services, and photographers. So much planning effort went into making this all work.

It took a while to get everyone posed so we'd have a good composition but I really like how it turned out, so it was worth the extra effort. Also I didn't have any powerful lights with me so we just used natural light but it still worked great. I might turn this into posters but I don't know yet.
