Gonna be blunt here… the fact AI has given large companies an incentive to want copyright/trademark/IP law reformed should probably be seen as a positive.

All those complaints about Disney and the RIAA, and Nintendo trying to take down fan projects and people losing millions to unfair court cases and legal demands… and now we may see that change.

By sheer greed and technological ‘luck’, we may see these companies tear each other to shreds.

Of course, some people will complain about it. And I do get it, you may not want large companies taking your ideas or what not.

But it’s obvious to me that the current system is a ridiculous mess. No, works shouldn’t be kept under copyright for life plus 50 years or whatever it is now. No, we shouldn’t allow entire families to coast off one IP for decades or centuries. Or see works from the 50s or 60s kept out the public sphere.

Let’s make it 30 or so years after publication and no more.

That way, any real hype benefits the creator, and once a work has been around long enough to inspire a genre/become a cultural icon, we can see how others will remix and use it as well.

There’s no real reason Super Mario Bros 1, 3, World and 64 shouldn’t be in the public domain for example. Same with Zelda A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time, the first few Pokemon generations, etc.
