Boy oh boy... Its 2025 but I sure am seeing a lot of #URLShortener links here.

A lot of people refuse to click shortened links.

Why?

Because most link shortening services are commercial. They are not free. You pay in data.

They can also be misused, captured and redirected.

The good news is, you don't need them on the #fedi! Put any URL of any length in your post and it will count as 23* characters - no shortener required!

*edited from 25 to 23 as per documentation.

@sb
URL shorteners have been abused to hide malicious websites, hence we don't click them. It is taught to us at the corporate level
@sb hi
shr.gej.pet/
sorry for self advert but this is just perfect opportunity
Link shortenender

@sb WHAT THE FUCK LINK DIED SORRY
@sb ok it works now sorry
@sb Except my domain is shorter than 25 characters. *whistles innocently*
@Dianora
I haven't looked at the code myself, but I suspect that 25 chars is a *maximum*. Now I'll have to go look!
@sb Indeed. I would think the shortener would take the smaller one.
@sb @Dianora ALL url's count as exactly 23 characters, shorter or larger, so using a "shorter than 23 character" url shortener url doesn't matter, it still is 23 characters.
@sb And please remove those tracking params.

@sstrader
AMEN to this!

If you must share a link to a resource on youtube, facebook, instagram etc, you can (and SHOULD) delete the tracking info included in the URL.

Recently this is often found as a parameter called "si".

For example:

https://youtu.be/K0QeSpu26wM?si=naCfyNJIwSv7qghj

Remove everything from "si" onward:

https://youtu.be/K0QeSpu26wM

quitting your youtube addiction is easy, actually

@sb 25? I thought it was 20. Well, that explains why my link-heavy posts always seem to run out of room before I'd planned!
Posting to your profile - Mastodon documentation

Sharing your thoughts has never been more convenient.

@FishNamedDog
We were both off - let's meet almost in the middle at 23.
@sb are there any good URL lengthener services that will get the real URL back without you having to click it?
@semitones
Cool idea! If it doesn't exist, it could very easily.
@sb I think it might be a thing for those using cross-posting services that post the same post on multiple platforms while some of those platforms count URLs by the actual number of characters rather than a fixed number. Those services should be updated to not use shorteners when posting on Mastodon or similar Fediverse platforms that follow this principle. Or at least they should offer that as an option. And they should disable shorteners on Fediverse by default.

@sb It would be even better if Mastodon's web UI had an option not to short links either.

I mean, visually, literally, it obscures part of the URL and adds "..." if it is long enough. It might not help promoting the idea that it's ok to just put non-cryptic URLs without shortening them first, but it sure annoys me.

And at least here that also makes it harder to select the address to paste it somewhere else, if it's at the end of the post.

#MastodonWebUI

@sb LOL queue someone embedding the Lord of the Rings movies as an urlencoded string
@sb Is 23 the common practice in the #fedi ? Can you link to the documentation you mentioned? I didn't pay attention to it until you mentioned it. As far as I know, each software—Misskey and forks, Friendica, Lemmy, Mbin, Pixelfed, Hubzilla, Bookwyrm, Mastodon®, etc.—follows their own. Did the #Fediverse standardized it recently?

@sb

not only these critical points, but also, in the age of phishing, people need to be able to see where they are going to go before they click on links

personally i think link-shortener and link-tracking tech is antithetical to the fediverse and should be called out more than people not CW'ing things

i refuse to boost things that use link-shorteners, especially ones owned by other social media giants like twitter

@sb

s/fedi/Mastodon/

The character limits and special case for links are specific to Mastodon.

@sb The service can also disappear, leaving the links broken!

@sb yes, archiveteam have enough work to do without using more of these stupid shorteners.
