A phrase I used often when I was a consultant leading executive workshops was “It Depends”. It was not unusual that a term used in different parts of the organization (e.g., Sales, Accounting, Order Processing, and Shipping) had slightly different meanings depending on the context. So it is with the term “Side Hustle”.

In general, a side hustle is any income-generating activity outside of your primary job. It’s how many professionals and retirees supplement their income, gain financial security, or even transition into full-time entrepreneurship.

But not all side hustles are created equal. Robert Kiyosaki’s “Cash Flow Quadrants” breaks down income sources into four categories:
✅ 𝐄 – 𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐞:: Some side hustles still fall in this quadrant — think gig work (Uber, freelancing). You trade time for money. Pros: Quick income, low risk. Cons: No leverage, limited scalability.

✅ 𝐒 – 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐄𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐲𝐞𝐝: You own the job. This includes consulting, coaching, or running a solo business. Pros: More control, higher earning potential. Cons: Requires time & effort, still dependent on YOU.

✅ 𝐁 – 𝐁𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫: You build systems that work for you. This includes online businesses, franchises, and automated income streams. Pros: Scalable, residual income. Cons: Requires initial investment & strategy.
