When this is over, U.S. rights abusers must be tried for crimes against humanity

Escalating reports of human rights crimes from Kristi Noem's propaganda to ICE cruelty must be wiped clean with justice.

The Philadelphia Inquirer

"I want to know who these people are, because they are wantonly committing human rights violations in my name and yours. Because when all this nonsense is over — and I swear that one day it will be, at the ballot box or in the streets or by any means necessary, even though I might not live to see it — I want more than just people feeling ashamed of their role in this spree of inhumanity.

I want justice."

"The sword of justice should someday come for the likes of Noem or immigration czar Tom Homan, who sees no problem in sending an innocent man into a gulag and who presides over the system that rounded up a mother and her three children in his hometown of Sacketts Harbor, N.Y., before his neighbors united in protest.
"Think about it. There’s a reason those ICE agents hastily pulled masks over their faces before they handcuffed a stunned and shrieking Rumeysa Ozturk and threw her into a van. They understand enough about the moral consequences surrounding their actions to know they don’t want decent citizens to know who they are.
"I want to know who they are. And just like we once saw at Nuremberg and in courtrooms from Tel Aviv to Cleveland, I want the worst offenders to face judgment for what they have done. Because right now, the American Experiment is going off the deep end, and it’s going to be a long swim back not only to save democracy, but to reclaim our humanity. "
@jackhutton This is it. It isn't about democracy, it is about humanity.

@jeffmcneill @jackhutton Exactly.

"You've done enough. Have you no sense of decency, sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?"

@jeffmcneill @jackhutton

"once the State of Israel was allowed to genocide Gaza humanity left the planet" - all that was holy

@jackhutton I like all of my Nazis wearing their uniforms so I can see where all the Nazis are.
@jackhutton I expect that when the Trump regime finally ends, that personnel records will be destroyed to prevent identifying the perpetrators.
@WackyIdeas @jackhutton they definitely will, so if you* can: keep paper records. Write down the names of the ones you can identify, which position they held, and what they did. With enough people collecting names there will be enough records that overlap to build a case.

* = Anyone and everyone
@jackhutton I hope that we have learned enough nonviolence from the Civil Rights movement that it will be trials rather than truth and reconciliation.
@ccdudley85 @jackhutton
My concern is that trials don't seem to be working. We're gonna need a bigger nonviolence...
@jackhutton
That is very well written! I hope many people have read it. Because that's how it started here in Germany at some point ...
@jackhutton Ha! They can't hide who they are from themselves. Not without real consequences to their psyches, that is. This is bad at the deepest human level.

@Bon_Jardin @jackhutton

Kristi Noem is mean and cruel to hide her stupidity.

@FrozenPeach "Pay no attention to the conscience behind that curtain." @jackhutton
@Bon_Jardin @jackhutton if it bother them they would stop. They will not feel remorse for what they’ve done because they think they are right. Letting millions of poor and disadvantaged die is ripping off a bandaid to them.

@jackhutton

This is the really telling bit. At the moment, those people still know, somewhere inside, that this is wrong.

But I fear there will come a time when they feel entirely free to show their faces.

@jackhutton People didn't work this out in 1967? Or in the Poll Tax riots of 1992?

Or on 2021/01/06? No, actually the prosecutions there were considerably aided by the anti-mask rhetoric of the instigators. Counter-point.

@jackhutton Fail-Safe was a good movie but Seven Days in May is more apropos!
@jackhutton You mean they're fucking cowards? Why not just say so? Most bullies are.

@jackhutton

That was my first take. They know what they are doing is abhorrent.

But they are doing it anyway.

@jackhutton

It won't. As soon as people like this are turfed out, we all breathe a sigh of relief and move on. "Move on" becomes our ideology. (C.f. Guantanamo Bay.)

That's why we keep ending up here again.

@jackhutton Don’t forget that NAZI biaaatch, the AG!

@jackhutton I want to know how paying $6 million to another country to hold 300 prisoners is “America First”.

Please understand I’m not advocating for profiting from locking people up. That’s disgusting, I’m just saying that if this administration was really about America first wouldn’t we be paying American trades people to build prisons in America and paying American people to work in those prisons, and American businesses to feed the people in the prisons ?

Our taxpayers can give $6 million to another country to make money off prisoners from America? How is this America first?

@maggiejk @jackhutton I think it's to show the world that the US is run by wicked people. They want to terrorize us.

@BLTpizza @jackhutton I also suspect it’s money laundering. I live in New Hampshire and Governor Sununu made a big show about shipping 300 troops down to the southern border a couple years ago.

They were sent for six months but the budget line item for it was outrageous. He never even tried to justify the ridiculously large amount. And I know the soldiers who were sent didn’t get paid a proportionate amount to what the taxpayers were charged.

It’s a grift for all of them. And yes, absolutely a threatening intimidation tactic.

@maggiejk

I've been saying this too. Other countries are using the US to launder money, and/or the US is using other countries to launder money. It's a two-way grift street. The US response to Ukraine and to Israel are proof enough for me.

@BLTpizza @jackhutton

@jackhutton
The Nuremberg trials established universal moral principles that can be prosecuted, irrespective of national boundaries and local legislation. The reckoning will come. Don’t forget their names.

@jackhutton
Does the author realise that human rights have basically no legal standing in the USA?

Yeah I know it's ironic, but the topic the US diplomats liked to use to irritate the "bad guys" is not the law in the USA.

Now civil right violations have been traditionally a civil issue, basically PD are used to pay for breaking your civil rights.

@jackhutton
If this ever ends…
There, I fixed it.
@Dawilson999 It'll end. I may be gone.. but, this'll recede into history.. and those responsible will be remembered and reviled.
@jackhutton I don't think people take this seriously enough or they think it's straight up hyperbole, but the fact is, human rights have been violated, people have been forced into confinement, slavery, and even death because of this. These are internationally recognized crimes against humanity and the world is not being nearly loud enough against this.
@nazokiyoubinbou @jackhutton
Why didn't the US ratify the ICC, you have to wonder? 🤔
@jackhutton
I recommend the trials occur in Neuremberg because the american law system is fully compromised and cannot deliver justice anymore.

@jackhutton

If Americans want this to end in their lifetime they are going to do a lot more than they are doing now. And quickly.

Without more overt action now, Trump will ensure there are no mid-terms.

18 months to save a country, at most, maybe less.

@jackhutton

Americans also need to consider that if Trump succeeds in dismantling Democracy now, whoever follows him may be even worse.

@jackhutton In an international court where Trump's pardons don't count.
@jackhutton first someone has to put an end to it

@jackhutton

That's a big ask for a country that was founded on colonization, genocide and white supremacy, that continues to this day, btw.

@jackhutton phhhhh. It’s not going to be over EVER unless people start waking up FAST.
@jackhutton I really wish they would stop using that disgusting picture.

@jackhutton

Agreed

But short of a failed attempt to annex planet followed by unconditional surrender, this will end with bloated orangutan's state funeral while defenders of the orthodoxy urge us to not speak ill of the dead

Like cops & clergy, politicians believe public shares their glorified view of their stations & tarnishing that image will damage society more than any crime committed

But public doesn't share their delusions & these "look ahead" decrees corrode what they seek to preserve

@jackhutton Don't look to America's other right-wing party for justice. If the Democrats are ever in a position to bring these people to justice, you are going to hear a lot about "healing" and "moving forward" etc. Look at how the Obama administration passed on charging anyone for the crimes committed in Iraq.

Those in power will never do anything that sets a precedent for holding powerful people accountable for their crimes because they know it will come back to bite them.

@jackhutton

This is why it's important to get & keep evidence.

The lack of evidence was how IG Farben skated on its Nuremberg charges.

1. Get depositions by witnesses
2. Copies of documentation
3. Examples of public corruption
4. Money laundering records
5. Lists of assets stolen or forcibly forfeited
6. Names & DNA of perpetrators so they can't hide in South America
7. Names of donors, quislings, & collaborators who can be convinced to flip and testify

Build a case against the GOP.

@Npars01 @jackhutton i hope you can keep the evidence secure, so that itll survive the civil war.
@jackhutton Call this what it is: The modern slave trade. This picture is of a slave auction. #slavery #humantrafficking
@jackhutton If we manage to stop Trump's reign of terror at the ballot box in the next elections, this won't happen, because the Dems and the MSM will insist it's time to "move on." If it comes to mass protests and violence to overthrow a dictator, that's where we'll see real consequences for these monsters.
@jackhutton When has that ever happened?

@jackhutton I wonder if Obama ever thinks about what an abject moral and leadership failure it was to say "we tortured some folks" and then let the war criminals off with a tepid scolding.

I sure do.

@jackhutton This picture always triggers me.
Why is there a front row of people shirts off but the others are not?
This inhuman vision is staged to make anyone believe that this is okay. That they deserve to be trated like this without a chance of due process.

This is insanity.

@jackhutton

I don't want Kristi Noem jailed.
Costs money.

I don't want Kristi Noem executed.
Costs money.

I want her tossed into a stone pit that she can't climb out of.

Then I want 20 starving dogs released in.

@jackhutton I really wish it would happen, but it's not. Obama didn't even do anything to the torture people during GWB.

Hell, we can't even get John Yoo's car keyed in Berkeley.
