Manga—Japanese comics—can trace its roots back to the 12th century with picture scrolls like #ChōjūGiga, which humorously depicted animals in human scenarios.
But the modern form we know began emerging in the post-WWII era. 2)
One of the most influential figures in modern manga was #OsamuTezuka, often called the “God of Manga.”
His 1947 series #NewTreasureIsland revolutionized the medium with cinematic storytelling.
He later created #AstroBoy, a key stepping stone to anime as we know it. 3)
Anime (Japanese animation) started gaining momentum in the 1960s with shows like Astro Boy (1963), which brought Tezuka’s characters to TV screens.
Its stylized art, limited animation, and deep themes made it instantly distinct from Western cartoons. 4)
By the 1970s and 80s, anime branched into genres like #mecha (#MobileSuitGundam), #magicalgirls (#SailorMoon), and #cyberpunk (#Akira).
It wasn’t just for kids—it explored politics, philosophy, and emotion in unique ways. 5)
Manga and anime exploded internationally in the 1990s and 2000s.
Shows like #DragonBallZ, #Pokémon, #Naruto, and Sailor Moon built global fanbases.
They sparked a new generation of fans—including my co-host this week, my daughter Lidia.
Today, #manga outsells American comics by a huge margin.
Anime dominates streaming platforms.
And creators like Briana Lawrence are helping make #fandom more inclusive, more joyful, and more magical. (6
