Our latest European shiny alternative is Pixii 🇫🇷, a French camera manufacturer. 📷

The company was founded in 2017 by David Barth, an entrepreneur who worked on Linux development for Ubuntu for almost 10 years, helping to develop and make Ubuntu more accessible.

He couldn't find the photo camera he wanted, so he decided to make one.

Pixii cameras are designed and made in Besançon, a city famous for its watchmaking and precision engineering. The final assembly of the camera happens there, but the parts that make up the camera come from different places. The mechanical parts are made in the Vosges region of France, while the electronic components are sourced from Germany and China.

The company's graphical designer, Isabelle Colas, has experience from the luxury and watchmaking industries, and she is responsible for the #Pixii cameras' elegant design. Her work has won the company awards like the Red Dot Design Award.

Pixii is competing with Leica 🇩🇪, but it works with #Leica's lenses. It's aimed both at #photography fans and the "Instagram generation". Despite challenges in increasing production, Barth's approach has attracted international attention and financial backing, including investments from people with experience in the industry.

Pixii Camera - Digital rangefinder camera

Pixii is a modern digital rangefinder camera made in France. Pixii features a high-precision rangefinder, interactive optical viewfinder, native smartphone connectivity and Leica-M compatible lens mount. Its sensor delivers a remarkable image quality, outperforming all comparable rangefinders on the market. Photographers enjoy its film-like experience thanks to the absence of a screen, subtle color profiles and unique RAW monochrome mode.

@ueeu - Is this a hidden way of "publicity" on Mastodon? I don't like this way of explicit "promotion". Smells fishy.

@wimvdputte

No, it's not 🙂 Maybe it's because we use the DeepL Pro corrector for our long texts? We've chosen a "business" tone to make it sound more factual, but we also adapt it to our way of writing, so it's not thaaat businesslike either 😅.

@ueeu The video begins with a dark scene where a small, indistinct object is barely visible. The scene transitions to a close-up of a black device with a textured surface and a silver border, prominently displaying the text "PIXII" in white. The camera zooms in on the device, revealing more details such as a dial and a button, with the text "4200" and "1500" visible on a small screen, indicating the device's model and specifications. The focus remains on the device, highlighting its sleek design and the "PIXII" branding.

The video continues with a close-up of the same black device, maintaining the focus on its top surface. The device's screen shows the text "M 4200" and "1500," along with other specifications like "1080P" and "120FPS," emphasizing its high-resolution capabilities. The camera angle shifts slightly to reveal more of the device's controls, including a large dial and a button, with a lens visible in the background, suggesting the device's use in photography or videography. The video concludes with a side view of the device, showcasing its sleek design and the lens, set against a dark background that highlights the device's features.

@ueeu There is a reason “our” European products can’t compete. €4200 for a camer with no lense? I would rather go for a decent Pentax or Sony with a lense included in the price, for half that amount of money 😂
@ueeu somehow I hoped the camera would use a linux derivate and could somehow be community driven, that could be a selling point for me.

@max
I have no idea why, but professional FOSS cameras are as elusive as FOSS printers. Maybe it's because there is no overlap between precision optics engineers, high speed image processing DSP knowledge and SoC design for Linux?

#SamsungNX was running a binary blob on top of Tizen Linux back in 2014. Sony had an Android runtime on some alpha models, and there is a bunch of Linux based dashcams (Novatek) still in production. That seems to be it.
