Today is the anniversary of the shelling of Ft. Sumter by the South Carolina militia, kicking off what would become the American Civil War.

If anyone tries to argue the Civil War was not about slavery, we need only point that misguided (misinformed, miseducated) individual to this statement from the Mississippi secession convention at the time:

"Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery—the greatest material interest of the world."

@dbsalk Slavery was enshrined in confederate constitution. The p and v.p. of the confederacy said in a speeches it was the reason for their existence. If I remember correctly, shortly after the same day losses at Gettysburg and Vicksburg, the south tried to change the narrative to 'state's rights'. They knew then it was over.

(If Meade would have acted right after Gettysburg, he would have easily destroyed Lee.)

@GregArcus It's too bad that the northern army was hamstrung by inept and/or slow-to-act generals throughout the war, or it might have been much shorter. If my memory serves me, Grant's jealous peers tried to smear him with rumors of alcoholism. Lincoln's response was "I can't spare this man; he fights!"
