*5 hours* out in the yard today to install new microswitch unit for #VW #DSG gear selector - whole entire centre console of #VWPolo had to come out - a bear of a job, especially removing a fiddly connector for the USB and getting it over the handbrake lever). Switch fitted and then it all has to go back together.

At least now I don't have "error: workshop! Leave vehicle only in position P" randomly appearing and USB music playback still works #CarMaintenance #AutoRepair #bladibarsket

@vfrmedia Oh that's not at all entertaining, what a PITA of a job!

@vwdasher My car looked like it had been in a chop shop earlier in the evening, and I had to slacken handbrake cables to allow the lever to raise higher then correct it.

On larger VW's (Golf/Beetle/Passat etc + Seat/Skoda/Audi - other than Ibiza/Fabia/A1 which have same space limitation as the Polo) you can get away with only removing part of the centre console, but cars with a white bit below the gear selector (seems to be older ones) require a different (and more expensive) part 3Q0713128

@vfrmedia it's so much easier in the older ones, so much less tech and shit in there 😆 What a bloody pain!

I remember when the heater core died in my 1990 BMW E30 and took out 17 layers of crap to get to it. Christ modern cars just get more and more annoying to work on.

@vwdasher I often add the hashtag #bladibarsket to my car repair toots, its a mild Malaysian English swear I learned from my late father (who was Malaysian Chinese) when he was working on cars in the 1970s (particularly a classic Mini van which was his first car in 1978) - the term was derived from the Australian English "bloody bastard" 😁
@vfrmedia that really is the perfect word for it 😀
