I miss the days of ubiquitous portable data storage

STOP USING MICRO SD

  • Data Storage wasn't supposed to be swallowable
  • What is even the point of having a disk you could hide under a loose fingernail?
  • With the approximate surface area of, I don't know, a molecule, how in the world is heat supposed to be dissipated??
  • Flash media supports incredible storage densities, but that doesn't mean you have to create a storage format that takes up the same volume of a drop of water!
  • Regular SD was the PERFECT size!!

THEY HAVE PLAYED US FOR ABSOLUTE FOOLS!!!!

Be practical many devices including the one that you use to type many of your messages in only have space for microSD

You're not supposed to take your microSD cards out and leave them on the countertop

@RadioAzureus @amin

It's mostly a joke/[meme] ^___^

I do think regular SD was a better form factor though.

Or better yet, the 1GB thumb drive I bought in 2007: it was a single-piece circuit board with USB contacts and flash chip+controller all embedded within the PCB and/or epoxy blob.

I think it was the direct predecessor to the MicroSD card, and the size was just perfect. It was literally just the size of the interior space of a USB-A port, but extended out a few centimeters so you'd have something to grab.

@rl_dane @amin @RadioAzureus I’d rather have CF cards, so nothing sticks out of the port (think laptop, catsπŸˆβ€β¬›, turning the laptop on the side, etc.) but you have a sensible size, interface and eject mechanism

@mirabilos @amin @RadioAzureus

Oh man, how did I forget CF? I really liked them, too, especially over those weird other cards*. I forgot the name β€” surface contacts like sdmicro, thin like sdmicro, but overall size more like CF. I never had one.

My CF readers never had an eject button, though. Would've been perfect, otherwise.

* SmartMedia! That was the name. I never had one. They're even thinner than sdmicro, though!

@rl_dane

now you're giving memories of my first USB drive's whopping 32MB (yes, MB, not GB) of space and being jealous when my little brother came home from a conference where he'd received a 256MB (yes, again with the MB) drive as swag. Such vast, unimaginable storage! πŸ˜†

@gumnos

I still remember the first 1GB USB disk I got in 2007. Just fantastic capacity, you couldn't even reason it*. 7 years earlier, you counted yourself lucky to have that capacity in a large, heavy, fragile Jaz disk.

Now it was in a one-piece teensy USB disk, not even wasting space to have a proper metal shield around the USB port.

Basically the predecessor of SDMicro in USB form.

* lol I have no idea what I was trying to say here. I have a cold. Brain foggy. XD

@rl_dane @amin I remember seeing the Men in Black movie when Jay was talking about buying the White album and I thought it was way too small. I like the SD format for size, mainly because I have large hands. Ideally, I think they should be playing card size with a bit of thickness but we aren't ever going back to that. :)

@rl_dane @amin

Muh boi spittin' _FAX_ over here!

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign

y'all are such goofballs

@amin @rl_dane

Is there any other kind of ball to be?

...Wait, don't answer that

@OpenComputeDesign @amin @rl_dane

I suppose some might go for "fancy dress ball" but that's certainly not me 😁

@gumnos @OpenComputeDesign @amin

The visual image... it's burning my mind. XD

@amin @gumnos @OpenComputeDesign

Just imagining a bunch of scruffy nerds in dresses?

@rl_dane @gumnos @OpenComputeDesign

In any case, "fancy dress" parties are what 'muricans call "costume" parties. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Costume_party

A costume party (American English) or fancy dress party (other varieties of English) is a type of party, common in contemporary Anglo culture, in which many of the guests are dressed in costume, usually depicting a fictional or stock character, or historical figure.

@amin @gumnos @OpenComputeDesign

Yeah, my neurospicy arse read "dress" and locked on to that quite literally.

@amin @rl_dane @gumnos

My dumbass assumed costume party meant like halloween

@amin @rl_dane @gumnos

Listen, I look ugly in _normal_ clothes :P

@OpenComputeDesign @amin @gumnos

I think I've seen a picture of you at some point, and you're not ugly.

@rl_dane @amin @gumnos

Listen, just because people who have seen me keep telling me I'm not ugly doesn't mean I'm not ugly :P

@OpenComputeDesign @amin @gumnos

No, that's pretty much exactly how it works.

You have been outvoted.

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos

Wait, but everyone telling you that you are ugly doesn't mean you are, that's just bullying? Sooooooo… sorry for bringing logic into this picture, didn't mean to ruin it. Ignore me. :P

@amin @rl_dane @gumnos

Exactly! Why are people always reverse bullying me???

@amin @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos

Dude... read the room. XD

@pixx and I have been "bullying" OCD to not hate himself for like a YEAR now.

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos @pixx

I'm sorry my brain is out of order today, I'm functioning off of a backup

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos @pixx

Plus, "reading the room" has never been my strong suit

@rl_dane @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos @pixx

Especially when there is no room

@amin @OpenComputeDesign @gumnos @pixx

There is no spoon.

Some balls are held for charity
And some for fancy dress
But when they're held for pleasure they're the balls that I like best
My balls are always bouncing
To the left, and to the right.
It's my belief that my big balls should be held every night!

Snowden hid his sdmicro card in a rubik's cube, underneath the axle screw cover (center tile), IIRC

At first, I thought they cut out a real floppy disk, and that made me sad.

But then I realized that even the body was 3d printed.

NICE

@amin @rl_dane and the converters make you lose data

and (someone posted about this a while ago) it’s the absolute worst interface, with no sensible ways to recover or even detect errors

@mirabilos @amin

But the adapters are just dumb hunks of plastic and metal. There's no logic in them. Maybe they lose data because of dodgy connections?

@mirabilos
@rl_dane

Important to create your ZFS datasets with copies=2 or higher for better data integrity on your micro SD cards πŸ˜‰

@gumnos @mirabilos

Is that like having RAID0 on a single disk? ;)

@rl_dane I think @amin really hates micro SD cards at this very moment

@joel @amin

lol, yes I've heard of his woes. ^__^

F

@rl_dane @joel

Apparently the adapter + microSD is recognized and readable by the laptop I have with an SD card reader built-in, but it can't read from the new SD card, which the Tangara recognizes.

@joel @amin

I didn't mention it in the #blost, but N*O*D*E on YT even modded a #Casio watch to hold an SDMicro card. He just took an SD Micro reader component like you'd see on a raspberry Pi and soldered it to the back of the watch.

#CasioCult

@rl_dane @amin yeah! I've seen those videos, there were a lot of pretty cool mods

@joel @rl_dane

SD cards in general, not specifically microSD. My specific issue is with full-size SD cards; I've never actually had an issue with microSD.
