A reminder that if the government can send migrants to a prison camp without any due process, it can send U.S. citizens there, too. I know because this happened to me and my family in 1942.

@georgetakei

I heard your family's story on the BBC πŸ˜”, thank you for sharing and reminding us.

@georgetakei I didn’t realize you’re 87 year old πŸ˜…
Thank you for sharing these bad memories with us, too many people seem to have forgotten how many people have been victims to racist laws in the past (and nowadays too)
@georgetakei
You know, deliberately create instability and civic unrest, and from there doctoring a pretext that allows you to invoke martial law is only a tiny step. That accomplished pretty much anything goes. It's how it's usually done.
@georgetakei But hey, the Supreme Court has explained that that was "gravely wrong." It took them 70 years to get around to explaining it, though.

@georgetakei sorry George

We need to make sure this will not happen again

@georgetakei May it never happen again πŸ™

@ErikUden @georgetakei

But it is happening - right now.

@georgetakei And that was a time of supposedly "responsible" governing. There's no doubt in my mind that they WILL go after anyone they feel they can, so protect your neighbors, your friends, everyone that matters to you. Be there for them.
@georgetakei it is so painful to see history repeated in the most scary and at the same time most idiotic way. Cruel in both - past and present.
@georgetakei The same happened in Canada. It is sad how easy it is to make happen
@georgetakei at last count, I think there were 7 alleged U.S. citizens disappeared to El Salvador. It's important to note that this is not a normal prison camp, either. It's a black hole where they throw lifers and proudly guarantee nobody who goes there ever returns.

@georgetakei

I was not even alive then, but I know what you are referring to. I am sorry for what you went thru. Way too many people today will never connect the dots. Mainly because they are not aware the dots exist.

#Education #History

@georgetakei I am sorry that happened, and I thank you for bearing witness to it.
@georgetakei and the damage done is uneff able?(can't think of the word, George! have a good night!
@georgetakei Thank you for sharing. It is an incredible thing to listen to generations who bridge the gap between societies great mistakes. I hope we all heed this warning.
@georgetakei I've been reading a book called American Sutra, about American Buddhists and how they lived through that era and in the camps. Amazing story and amazing people. Hard to believe it actually happened here, but alas it did and we must not forget.
@georgetakei But, but, but I thought in Saving Private Ryan, America's the good guy.
@georgetakei why I will not step foot inside the US. It is a #corrupt #fascist dictatorship

@georgetakei they already did so:

@georgetakei Thank you for this reminder. It’s chilling. They can name anything a β€œwar” and put any of us on the other side of that war. I am so sorry you and your family had to endure incarceration.
@georgetakei It allready happens today.
@georgetakei
GOP Congress can stop tRUMP at any time. In the case of tariffs, they could simply reassert their constitutional power to manage tariffs.
@georgetakei Remember it is not just US
citizens, look up extraordinary rendition!
@georgetakei Copied from Wikipedia, β€œA 2018 report by the Intelligence and Security Committee of Parliament found the United Kingdom, specifically MI5 and MI6, to be complicit in many of the renditions carried out by the U.S., by helping to fund them, by supplying intelligence, and by knowingly allowing the abductions to happen.” The UK is just as guilty!
@georgetakei Yet another reminder that in Trump, Bin-Laden has got exactly what he wanted.

@georgetakei

It's the same law is it not, the "Alien Enemies Act" that the Trump regime is using to disappear "non-citizens" to the El Salvador prison?

The law that President Roosevelt used in 1942. It's from 1798.

@georgetakei thank you for your ongoing speaking up about these glaring and disturbing historical throughlines
@georgetakei I find that prospect most chilling.
@georgetakei justice Jackson even referenced Japanese internment during ww2 in her dissenting opinion
@georgetakei And they are building more private prisons as we speak (detention camps)
@georgetakei I sometimes really wish Scotty could "beam us up"

@georgetakei

George, please don't stop saying that. It is just so important.
