Real vs Fake Luau - an actual luau involves working 'aina (land) according to ability, and then distributing according to need. Fake luau is over-priced food made and served by underpaid workers to wealthy foreigners for capitalist profit -- such as all Waikiki, Disney Aulani, etc.
Pre-colonization, we Hawaiians worked 3-4 hours per day, and all resources (food, medicine, housing) were distributed according to need through the ahupua'a system. Zero hoarding (capitalism) was allowed by ali'i (leaders), and mass worker exodus as retaliation prevented it.
Hui were 1800's worker-coops where Hawaiians and other migrants from Asia worked together against white racialized-capitalist plantation owners. Many Asia-Pacific relatives also share the word 'hui'. 'La-hui' - nation in Hawaiian. 'Hui' is a Maori word for gathering. 'Xiaokang She-hui' - 'moderate collective prosperity' in Mandarin. Collective farming in Vietnam is also described as a 'hui'.
Emma Kaleleonālani, fought for the world's first universal healthcare system in 1859, in Hawaii. No Western country would attempt socialized medicine for a century. This system was arguably, 'luau but for medicine'. The US decimated our free healthcare for selfish profit. Today US workers are wealth-stripped by private healthcare.
If you appreciate the education, consider supporting what we do at the Silver Spook Cooperative so we don't become homeless Hawaiians in our own land AGAIN!

@silverspookgames #alt4you Portrait of Queen Emma Kalanikaumakaʻamano Kaleleonālani Naʻea Rooke, to left of black and white photograph of Queens Hospital in 1859, captioned:
Established in 1859, Queens Hospital provided healthcare at no charge to the people of Hawaii. After the illegal military occupation by the US, there was a concerted attempt to defund and destroy this system.
Today, Hawaiians have some of the worst health outcomes in the US.

We were on a rugby trip in 2012 and someone in our team organised us to go one of these fake luau bus trips. The bus drove us past a smelly oil refinery. We were captives there. No one enjoyed it. It was the lowlight of our trip. The kiwis in the team were especially critical.

The real luau would have been awesome. I hope you reclaim your independence, as I am never setting foot in the USA again.
