Read this. Spread it. Our nation does this in our name to a tourist--and much, much worse to immigrants without power or protection.

“Bana, from Romania, was on holiday in Canada and visited Peace Arch park, on the international boundary between the US and Canada. She told Becky she had been taking selfies with her husband when a US border official told her they had strayed into American territory without the right visa and took her into custody.”

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis Seems like it's best to avoid even being close to the US.

@old_hippie @jeffjarvis

True, but sad because the park has for so long represented the dream of a future that will surpass borders.

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis

I hope that Trump either forgets to or dies in office before he can blanket pardon the ICE and "deputy" officers that are "just following orders". And then I hope we can have a Nuremberg for the lot of them.

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis

Maybe it is past time to put up a border Fence on the Canadian Side, to be safe from the US agents who surely salivate for this sort of "opportunity" to handle "trespassers"... This shit won't end or it won't end soon...

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis The #USIsATerroristState Enter at your own risk. Avoid at all costs.

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis @mpjgregoire
Maybe we should close the gates at Peace Arch Park? You know, those that are not meant to be closed…

That’s how bad it has gotten.

@DavidM_yeg @jeffjarvis These motherfuckers will grab anyone to make the quota.

@jeffjarvis not in my name...there is no "we", in this....there is no "us" in this.

THEY are doing this in THEIR own names, for their own gain.

Let's keep the factions nicely separated to avoid mental cross contamination.

@jeffjarvis OK America, we get the message, we'll leave you to Brexit yourselves, we'll move on with our lives without you. 🤷‍♂️
#BeckyBurke
@jeffjarvis Despicable. She is right - everyone stay away from the US. Don't give them your tourist money, go to a nice country instead. Don't buy anything american.
@jeffjarvis This is absolutely disgraceful.
@jeffjarvis I have many American friends, from the time I lived and worked in Boston. But today America should hang its head in shame. Either that, or stand up and insist the carrot head be removed from office. This is #Brexit but in a far larger scale. The greatest act of self-harm the world has ever seen.
@Becksy @jeffjarvis I'm hanging my head, but I'm also raising my voice.

@alisynthesis @jeffjarvis

As a German I feel with you. I'm removed generations from Nazi Germany — born in the 60s. It is with mixed feelings to get Germany's past thrown in your face every day with the current sins of the US.

But if Germany's past as the ultimate baddies helps prevent some of the atrocities in this world, I'm good with it.

#Fremdschämen #NaziGermany #Mores #CautionaryTales #Humanity #HumanRights #Dignity #Politics #Resistance

@silkester @jeffjarvis I can only imagine how hard that must be. I truly hope this country can snap out of it before it comes to that. If we do, it will be in no small part because of Germany's very impressive reckoning with its own past.

If we don't, I guess Americans will be in your situation in a few decades.

@alisynthesis few decades? Try a few months at most.

@Tenor2JT Oh yeah, we'll have a fully authoritarian regime in a few months if we're not careful. We likely already do. I meant a few decades before America has grappled with the really awful things we did.

Oh wait...the really awful things we will have done MOST RECENTLY.

Oh wait...

This country is so fucked up. :(

@jeffjarvis
"Officers took away all her personal belongings, measured her height and weight, made her pose for a mugshot, and assigned her an “A” number (short for “alien”). Whenever she asked the people processing her arrival how long she would be detained for, they told her they couldn’t help: they worked for GEO, the private company contracted to run the facility, and not Ice, the government body that would decide her fate."

The Scarlet Letter meets the prison industrial complex.

@jeffjarvis After Jasmine Mooney our family policy is no visits to the US, even though we're a half hour drive to the border from our home. Also no more visits to Peace Arch park apparently....

@jeffjarvis Okay, she might've infringed the terms of her tourism visa. Normally, you then have to leave the country, and you may be subjected to a re-entry ban for up to five years.

Looks to me as if the U.S. is trying to make their country as unattractive and hostile as it gets.

@jeffjarvis "Special relationship", riiiiight.

@jeffjarvis

When is UK/Europe reacting and putting pressure on America? It's incredible that America can simply detain citizens of their allies on their way back home and no one is reacting.

If I was the British prime minister, I would have immediately had the US ambassador in my office for a conversation...

@jeffjarvis

Apart from anything thing else it will kill off the Tourist Industry in the US.

As much as I might want to see many places in the US there is no way on Earth that I'm visiting voluntarily 🫤

@jeffjarvis I have already heard about conferences in the us losing overseas attendees because people don't want to risk it.

I wonder which will be the first major conference to move it (to Canada most likely).

@loke @jeffjarvis will be a very empty 2026 FIFA World Cup
@twallutis @jeffjarvis we will see. But, have you seen football fans? There is very little that would stop them from watching their games.
@jeffjarvis "Canadian border officials told her that her living arrangements meant she should be travelling on a work visa, not a tourist one. They sent her back to the US." I hope Canada updates our protocols so this doesn't happen again. Surely we could have provided her temporary refuge until the visa issue was resolved or made arrangements to get her safely back home to the UK.

@jeffjarvis @briankrebs guys, don’t go to DEF CON. Don’t go to Orlando or Vegas. Being white or Canadian or British won’t save you
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs in 2018 I narrowly avoided an interrogation as I was foolishly wearing an ‘impech the motherfucker already’ tshirt entering lax (later I was told I was lucky it was thanksgiving Day). The customs agent put a chill up my spine when he indicated I might have a bad time if I continued to express opinions. I vowed that day to never return. I can’t imagine the risk anyone who doesn’t lick boots is taking entering the us now. Blink wrong and you’re in the hole for 9 days.
@delProfundo @jeffjarvis @briankrebs it’s not just even being political. Being a hacker or having cybersecurity stuff could be enough. Do not go!!
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs yeah exactly. If we’re already hearing about these cases the ones we haven’t heard of will be horrific
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs I've wondered whether @defcon should warn foreigners to stay away, they way they warned Feds after the Snowden exposures. It seems unkind to attract people into a hostile Nazi state run by madmen.
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs
Hear me out: DEF CON in Casino de Montréal!
@hacks4pancakes @dragonsidedd @jeffjarvis @briankrebs I would be like "ew no, literally anywhere else please" but I realise that the reasons I am like please no, likely make it a suitable replacement for Vegas 😂
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs
In case you were wondering: ' What's the alternative in Northern Hemisphere Summer' -> In Europe this is festival Season. We don't want to be indoors. There are a gazillion of Hacker Camps. Not boot camps. Tent Camps. With all the Blinkenlights and Wifi you can eat. Most of them are small but some are big. Some are listed here https://events.ccc.de/ But there are more!

@hacks4pancakes After just realizing your masto-handle: Some of the Camps will have @c3WOC attending!

@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs there's there Dutch hacker camp why2025.org at exactly the same weekend.

Way cooler, way more teaching, way more interesting.

It's next to Amsterdam and flights there are rather cheap these days from the states

@mcfly @hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs I am so excited about WHY, "what the hack" was my first conference of that scale, and left a strong impression on me, but I haven't been back to a outdoor event yet, due to budget and distance.
@hacks4pancakes @jeffjarvis @briankrebs it would be awesome if we finally had a reason to stop patronizing the ecological disaster that is Vegas.
@jeffjarvis
It really is insane. And I think that the whole point of the Dump administration is just plain cruelty. People should rethink whether or not they want to come and be a tourist in the US. This is just utter nonsense...
@jeffjarvis Why would anyone want to visit the US now? There are so many other countries inbthe world where you cam stay in a nice hotel or accommodation rather than be humiliated in a detention centre. It's now a very dangerous place for most of us to visit.

"[graphic artist Rebecca] Burke had arrived in the US during the Biden administration, only to become one of 32,809 people to be arrested by Ice during the first 50 days of Donald Trump’s presidency. Since February, several young foreign nationals have been incarcerated in Ice detention centres for seemingly little reason and held for weeks, including Germans Lucas Sielaff, Fabian Schmidt and Jessica Brösche."

A few weeks ago someone was calling out decisions to continue holding international tech conferences in the US. I didn't understand why. Now I do.

"Bana, from Romania, was on holiday in Canada and visited Peace Arch park, on the international boundary between the US and Canada. It just occurred to me that the international community could boycott imports from the US, or refuse to exports to it. But the specifics need thinking through. Like;

* what changes would be considered sufficient to declare an end to the tactic?

* How could it targeted at the oligarchs siding with the Orange Stalin regime, rather than making it even harder for ordinary USAmericans to make ends meet?

@jeffjarvis
From that article:
"Becky says America isn’t the country she thought it was. Her advice to anyone planning to travel to the US is simply not to go."

Yep, that sums it up pretty much. America is off my list forever. I don't want to set foot there, the risk is too great.
