So, I'm just a lady who studies the horrors of fascism and right wing extermination campaigns, but is it a *good* idea to let nazi propagandists completely control the narrative surrounding a fascist government's rapidly expanding pogrom against a highly-vulnerable marginalized group?

Trump’s Anti-Trans Orders Get Most Airtime on Fox News, Report Finds

"In President Donald Trump’s first month back in the White House, Fox News broadcasted more coverage of his anti-transgender executive orders than both MSNBC and CNN, according to a report by Media Matters for America — allowing the right-wing network to shape public discourse on trans people at a critical time for transgender rights.

“The shocking lack of coverage by more liberal media has allowed Fox News to push increasingly harmful narratives about transgender people,” LGBTQ legislative researcher Allison Chapman told Truthout.

In his first 31 days back in office, Trump signed a slew of anti-trans executive orders undermining the rights and protections of transgender, intersex, and nonbinary people. These policies sought to eradicate legal recognition of transgender identities, reinstate a ban on transgender people in the military, cut federal funding for hospitals providing gender-affirming care to trans people under the age of 19, withhold federal funds from schools that allow trans women to compete in women’s sports, and reverse diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives."

Folks, I'm getting pretty tired of explaining to incredulous cis-het people that the larger liberal establishment doesn't care if trans people live or die; the evidence, whether it's raw television broadcast data, a lack of organized protest to oppose anti-trans laws, or maggot collaborators like Gavin Newsome gleefully telling nazi propagandists they make some good points about trans rights, is literally all around you. As both an antifascist researcher and a target of the anti-trans pogrom, I can assure you that this is real and I'm not overreacting. When a government pursing fascist policies and using eliminationist rhetoric officially decrees that there are only two "biologically" determined "sexes" and thus trans people don't exist, they are following an eliminationist blueprint designed to make trans people not existing an enforced reality; if you want to know how that story ends, you should study the step by step process of isolating, de-personing, and demonizing Jewish people that Hitler and the Nazi Party used to justify, enable, and enact the Holocaust. Maybe you already realize this, maybe you know that the fascists aren't going to stop eliminating groups of people they don't like after they get done erasing the existence of trans people, maybe you even care about trans lives on a personal level; but your leaders don't, the opinion makers who control public discourse don't, and the politics being pursued by the larger liberal establishment in the face of an active anti-trans pogrom actually occurring as we speak, make that abundantly clear.

Or, maybe you don't care. Perhaps, like a lot of cis het people, you're not openly transphobic, but you find trans people somehow scandalous, distasteful, or disconcerting, and that's enough to buy your silence and keep you from speaking out against the silence of your leaders and media organizations. I don't know how to make folks who don't think my existence matters care about trans lives if telling them that refusing to speak out and fight back now, means their families, their children, will be next, isn't enough. What I can tell you is that avoiding the subject and hoping the nazis lose interest in erasing trans people from our society isn't going to work, and hasn't worked for anyone else trying to stop a fascist takeover in all of human history.

The fact is that Fox News (and every other fascist propaganda outlet in America) hasn't been pushing a moral panic about trans people (particularly trans women) while gleefully celebrating legal assaults on trans people's right to exist, for no reason; these fascists are dead serious about this, they want their base to be excited about this, and they're putting in the work every day to make sure public opinion continues to favor further marginalizing, punishing, and yes eventually eliminating, trans people. The fact that corporate media muppets and bougie Democrat political strategists can point me to polls showing that the fascists are moving the needle, and defending trans people is unpopular with suburban white voters who picked Trump anyway, doesn't prove their cowardice is justified, it just proves that the larger liberal establishment isn't working hard enough to oppose an anti-trans pogrom; and that, whether you want to believe it or not, puts everyone in danger - even you.

Trump’s Anti-Trans Orders Get Most Airtime on Fox News, Report Finds

The lack of coverage from other networks has allowed Fox News to shape the narrative at a crucial time for trans rights.

Truthout

I'm probably preaching to the choir by posting this on the fediverse, but given the now abundantly clear primacy of transphobia as a permission gate and recruiting tool for the larger fascist project, and the fact that much of the liberal establishment is no longer pushing back on anti-trans propaganda (indeed, some highly influential folks are actually pushing the narrative that even tepid pushback against anti-trans propaganda is why Trump won the election), assuming everyone who isn't a fascist *already*knows this is a moral panic designed to push a trans-eliminationist agenda, seems like the least good option going forward. If the video I'm sharing with you here seems like old news to you, maybe consider sharing it with people in your life who aren't as politically engaged as you are because believe me, all the evidence is saying they do *not* already know this shit.

In this lengthy episode of Some More News, Cody and the crew talk about why trans people are real human beings just like everyone else, debunk the garbage "science" transphobes are using to push an anti-trans pogrom, point out that the social contagion theory of why trans people exist is obviously a moral panic, discuss how rare voluntary detransitioning really is, and how anti-trans activists are being given a massively outsized voice in this discussion given that it's literally the same handful of people, talk about how fascists are actively engendering anti-trans hate as a skeleton key for pushing a wider fascist political agenda, and even tackle why the anti-trans pogrom appears to be working as a strategy for the fascists to accomplish that goal.

It's a lot of information to take in, but Cody keeps the discussion fast-paced and entertaining; and obviously a mainstream media complex that has decided to abandon trans people to their fate at the hands of fascists who mean to erase us (both figuratively and literally, by murdering trans people) isn't going to tell you this stuff anymore.

Trans People Are Real and Detransitioning Isn't That Common – SOME MORE NEWS

YouTube

Recently I watched a Majority Report interview with trans actress Laverne Cox; I'll probably share that here too once MR gets around to clipping the segment. In that discussion she talks about how the road to America's anti-trans pogrom was built built by shifting the focus off (then) unpopular bathroom ban bills, and towards the subject of trans (mostly) women competing in sports, after monstrous fundie think tanks like the Alliance for Defending Freedom (ADF) actually focus tested which trans-related issues were most effective in riling up anti-trans sentiment and triggering the slippery slide towards trans eliminationism.

At the time, I honestly didn't think much of the fascist right's tactical shift; after all, there aren't that many trans women athletes, trans women are not dominating women's sports even when they do participate, and I didn't think America would have much sympathy for the petulant fit Riley Gaines (a woman who finished tied for fifth place with a trans woman athlete in an NCAA swim meet literally nobody would care about otherwise) was throwing. I'm going to have to take the "L" on that one; apparently I forgot that tears from a semi-attractive white woman are often part of the arcane spell eliminationist reactionaries use to conjure up support for fascist ideology and oppression - silly me.

Unless you've been in a coma, you already know the rest of the story; Gaines would appear on Fox News a staggering 29 times in the year after her race, trans sports bans would lead to the very same unpopular bathroom bills now passing, and today we live in a country where the President has made the erasure of trans people in public life (both figuratively, and literally) an official US government policy. In studying the aftermath of this anti-trans propaganda campaign, researchers have noted that the attacks on trans women in sport were an effective permission gate for the anti-trans pogrom because they triggered a sense of "unfairness" in cis-het people who were already inclined to think of trans people, particularly trans women, as an "otherized" and alien group in our society. Which is of course surreal, because as this article by Jules Boykoff and Satoko Itani notes, scientific evidence has repeatedly demonstrated that trans women who've been undergoing hormone replacement therapy for at least a year, literally do not have an advantage over cis-women athletes at all.

https://www.commondreams.org/opinion/trans-moral-panic-falsespor

The Spreaders of the Trans Athlete Moral Panic Live in a Fact-Free Fantasyland

"One in-depth review of existing scientific literature on transgender athlete participation in competitive sport published between 2011 and 2021 found that “trans women who have undergone testosterone suppression have no clear biological advantages over cis women in elite sport.”

Another study found that transgender women athletes could actually be disadvantaged: “Compared with cisgender women,” the study found, “transgender women have decreased lung function, increasing their work in breathing.” Douglas Oberlin, an exercise physiologist who reviewed the scientific evidence related to transgender athletes’ performance, notes that “the limited information available does not suggest that trans men and trans women have much, if any, athletic advantage post-transition.”

In other words, yes, Americans who don't know their ass from their elbow just empowered a real as fuck fascist regime that is now destroying their lives, at least in part because they're big mad about the presumed "unfairness" of trans women competing in sports they otherwise do not care about, despite the fact that said "unfairness" has been scientifically proven to not exist. And while that's a sort of tragic comedy moment on its face, the consequences for trans people and folks who don't like fascism, are no laughing matter.

"Let’s be absolutely clear: The stakes are sky-high. The endgame of this bipartisan, anti-trans witch hunt is twofold. On the practical side, it enables the bracing possibility of raving randos demanding genital checks from the sidelines of youth sports events for kids who don’t conform to their strict versions of gender. (In West Virginia, Republicans have already voted through legislation green-lighting healthcare providers’ ability to perform genital checks on children without parental consent). But more broadly, the endgame is trans banishment. As journalist Dave Zirin put it, “The ‘pro-trans in everything but sports’ position can metastasize into… a broader anti-trans stance, the forcible erasure of transgender people from society.”

The push to expel trans women from elite sport, aided and abetted by Democrats like Gavin Newsom, is stoked by what Judith Butler calls “fascist passions.” As M. Gessen recently wrote, “The message, consistent and unrelenting, is that trans people are a threat to the nation. The subtext is that we are not of this nation.”

The Spreaders of the Trans Athlete Moral Panic Live in a Fact-Free Fantasyland | Common Dreams

When it comes to any supposed advantages that trans women athletes may have, the actual facts are quite different from the “common-sense” hype.

Common Dreams

I should also note that the above article devotes a small amount of space to discussing Gavin Newsom's recent podcast episode with fascist anti-trans propagandist Charlie Kirk, as a way of exemplifying how the moral panic about trans women in support has a significant degree of high-profile, bipartisan support in US politics. I left that part out of my analysis both because I was running out of characters, and because I wrote about Newsom's collaborationist bootlicking in another post published earlier this month; you can find that post here:

https://social.treehouse.systems/@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes/114118054155798227

"Of course, they weren't just talking about the weather; Governor Newsom, who btw has one of the safest seats in all of US government and thus has no electoral need to pander to, again, fascists who want to criminalize and ultimately end the existence of trans people, invited Charlie on his podcast to spew transphobic propaganda in service of an active fascist pogrom targeting trans people and in particular young trans women; and then agreed with him. There is no wiggle room or nuance to be had here, Newsom just helped the fascists make trans people less safe in America and his actions absolutely *will* have a body count associated with them down the line. This isn't about women's sports, or gender care in carceral settings because those are just the wedge arguments the fascists are using to criminalize trans existence; what Newsom is doing here is agreeing in principle that trans people are a danger to women/girls, and that their medical rights should be subject to legislation - all that's left to argue about at that point is to what degree trans people aren't people and thus don't have the same rights as other Americans."

AnarchoNinaAnalyzes (@[email protected])

Imagine for a moment that you were the Dem governor of the most populous state in a country that just elected an openly fascist government that is actively using a moral panic to criminalizing the existence of a highly vulnerable minority group while conducting a much broader pogrom against that vulnerable and targeted minority group; in this case trans people. What is the most pathetic, craven, cowardly, selfish, irresponsible, and openly collaborationist (with fascists) thing you could possibly do? I guarantee that no matter what your brain just came up with, it's not worse than what California Governor and potential 2028 Dem presidential nominee Gavin Newsom just did: https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/ca-gov-gavin-newsom-completely-aligns "On Thursday, California Governor Gavin Newsom launched his new podcast, This is Gavin Newsom. His first guest? Notorious anti-LGBTQ+ extremist Charlie Kirk. The episode covered a wide range of grievances Kirk and other far-right activists have with Newsom, touching on topics from Black Lives Matter to COVID policies. However, the issue of transgender rights surfaced repeatedly. At one point, Newsom stated he was "completely aligned" with Kirk on transgender participation in sports. He also appeared to express agreement with restrictions on medical care for incarcerated transgender people and limits on gender-affirming healthcare for transgender youth." Yes, you read that correctly; the Dem Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, celebrated the birth of his new podcast by inviting Charlie fucking Kirk on to his show and stridently agreeing with him about various aspects of the GOP's fascist war on trans rights and by extension, their efforts to threaten the existence of trans people entirely. I'm sure some Dem apologists reading this are already calling me an alarmist, but before I explain why you can't have just "a little" fascist persecution of trans people, I'd like to make something abundantly clear. Charlie Kirk is a professional fascist propagandist, who is actively employed in the task of creating ideological arguments to support, and popular support for, a real as fuck pogrom against trans people. That's what he is, that's what he does for a living: "Newsom’s invitation and capitulation to Charlie Kirk on his podcast will alarm LGBTQ+ advocates. Kirk has a well-documented history of extremist rhetoric and hostility toward the LGBTQ+ community. In a 2023 video, he stated, “These people are sick… I blame the decline of American men. Someone should have just ‘took care of it’ the way we used to take care of things in the 1950s and 60s, but as you have testosterone rates going down and men acting like women, well…”—seemingly advocating for violence against transgender people. Kirk has also repeatedly used the slur "tr*nny" and has encouraged its normalization. He once called transgender people “a throbbing middle finger to god.” In the last election cycle, TPUSA’s PAC, which he leads, spent millions on anti-transgender ads, making his presence on Newsom’s platform all the more striking." Given that, hosting Charlie Kirk on your podcast in the first place is a profoundly craven and dangerous act of fascist collaboration. Enough so that even if Newsom and Kirk were chatting about the weather, he should still be forced to resign immediately from both the party and the governorship. Of course, they weren't just talking about the weather; Governor Newsom, who btw has one of the safest seats in all of US government and thus has no electoral need to pander to, again, fascists who want to criminalize and ultimately end the existence of trans people, invited Charlie on his podcast to spew transphobic propaganda in service of an active fascist pogrom targeting trans people and in particular young trans women; and then agreed with him. There is no wiggle room or nuance to be had here, Newsom just helped the fascists make trans people less safe in America and his actions absolutely *will* have a body count associated with them down the line. Folks, this isn't some backwater school board rep straying off script; Newsom is probably one of the five most powerful people in the entire Democratic Party and clearly has designs on the presidential nomination for the 2028 US election. If liberals want to prove folks like me are wrong when we say Dems would trade trans lives for ten suburban white votes in an election they'll lose anyway, you need to DO something about Gavin Newsom; immediately. #Fascism #Trump #CharlieKirk #GavinNewsome #TransRights #Pogrom

Treehouse Mastodon

So as I mentioned yesterday, I'd like to share this Majority Report interview with trans actress Laverne Cox about the fascist assault on trans rights, the dehumanization of trans people, and how what I've come to define as the anti-trans pogrom fits in to the larger capitalist, patriarchal, white supremacist, and ultimately fascist project. While Cox is a well informed, focused, and insightful guest that's worth listening to in any setting, as a trans woman one of the things I liked best about this interview is how the two cisgender hosts of the show allowed her to control the discussion and ultimately create a conversation that I think is equally valuable for trans people, other members of the LGBTQ community, and cis-het folks who want to serve as accomplices, not just allies, for a trans community in the fascist crosshairs as we speak.

Cox and the hosts discuss the recent history of anti-trans legislation, the larger fascist quest to eras trans people in public life, and how dehumanizing language and anti-trans propaganda serve as a permission structure for both eliminating trans people's civil rights and further dehumanization. They also talk about the reality that this project to justify and create the anti-trans pogrom is a well-funded, highly coordinated endeavor with architects across the entire American right, as demonstrated by the fact that almost everything to demonize, oppress, and erase trans people that GOP fascists have accomplished since Trump took office, was laid out in advance in Project 2025. Cox even articulates what most trans people already know in their hearts but many cis liberals treating us like a political football don't seem to understand; that the path the fascists are adopting here may lead to the genocide of trans people.

The group then shifts focus to talk about the relationship between the anti-trans pogrom, white supremacist patriarchal Christian Nationalism, and a larger fascist project that ultimately serves to enrich and empower predatory capital. Cox notes that what folks who aren't on the firing lines call a "culture war" is really about civil rights for those who are. The gang points out that policing of trans people in public life, is really just an extension of an ideology that views women as property, and that opens up a pathway to gendered power dynamics and enforced policies that harm *all* women, not just trans women. As both Cox and Vigland note, the fact that dehumanizing anti-trans propaganda ultimately serves as the thin end of the wedge for this larger fascist project and touches on other forms of targeted oppression towards non-white people, women, migrants, and young people, means that taking about the anti-trans pogrom is not a distraction, but rather a vital step towards defending us all from fascism.

Finally Cox talks about the importance of folks who support trans people actually rehumanizing trans folks in the broader culture, why allowing the right to force the discussion into a lens of medicalization is an unworkable strategy, and why nobody who isn't trying to get trans people murdered should be "consorting with the likes of Charlie Kirk." In a moment that may come as a surprise to cis people, she points out that even conceding to the idea that trans identities, trans rights, or trans existence are topics to debate, is an unacceptable level of dehumanization and helps the fascist cause. As Cox poignantly notes, "there is no middle ground when someone wants you extinguished."

Fresh off punting a winnable election to a trans-eliminationist fascist political movement, a Democratic Party unprepared to accept it was a bad idea to pick aiding a genocide, promise to hunt down migrants better than the GOP, and court suburban white fascists who vote Republican over turning out their own base and beating Trump, has decided to blame their loss on trans Americans they already abandoned during that campaign anyway. Now, as the Trump regime legally codifies its attempts to eliminate trans people from public life, and even existence itself, "wise centrists" in the party are using their "one trans friend" as a shield to cover up their plan to, um, defend trans people from fascists even less!

https://truthout.org/articles/democrats-reshuffling-on-trans-issues-cedes-key-territory-to-the-far-right/

Democrats’ “Reshuffling” on Trans Issues Cedes Key Territory to the Far Right

"A Republican lawmakers wage an all-out assault on transgender people, Democrats are reportedly “reshuffling.” In a recent article, sources told NOTUS that the party is attempting to adjust its tone on trans issues following its crushing losses in the 2024 election, instead seeking a sort of middle ground that won’t “inflame” voters.

The myth that Democrats were too radical on trans issues has been echoed by various mainstream pundits in the wake of Donald Trump’s return to the White House. In reality, moderate Democrats largely declined to speak out about trans rights on the campaign trail. "

As a trans woman, I often wonder if rank and file, cis liberals understand the degree to which the (nominally) liberal establishment has completely abandoned, even turned against, trans people at the precise moment a politically empowered fascist movement with a trans-eliminationist agenda, has begun to legally enshrine an anti-trans pogrom.

Given the high-profile (although often performative) support the "liberal" establishment, including the Democratic Party, corporate entertainment and media organizations, and even large companies in the private sector expressed for trans rights a mere eight years ago, I can understand how folks who aren't living a trans existence, or plugged into trans issues, might not even be aware of how ephemeral that support was, and how much the mainstream establishment's appetite for defending trans people from fascist repression has shrunk. Speaking anecdotally, most labor class liberals I know who supported trans rights in 2016, still seem to support them (at least publicly) in 2025, and are opposed to the fascist anti-trans pogrom, but become angry, or defensive when I point out that the liberal leadership class no longer seems to agree with them.

Of course to excuse this act of scapegoating and betrayal, the liberal leadership class points to issue based polling that shows attacking trans rights is popular with cis-het people right now. Can anyone being honest really be surprised by that? Trump and the fascist GOP have spent the past six years manufacturing consent for an anti-trans pogrom, while our "allies" in the liberal mainstream discourse have increasingly refused to even talk about trans rights in a humanizing, effective way; and as such, I'm supposed to be shocked that trans rights aren't polling well in cis-het America? You know what else isn't polling well right now in America? A cowardly, collaborationist Democratic Party that refuses to stand up to Elon Musk, Downmarket Mussolini, and the fascist Trump regime; to turn around and blame the party's feckless incompetence on trans people existing so the GOP can make attack ads pretending that's Democrat's fault, would be craven and malicious at the best of times. To do it in the middle of a fascist anti-trans pogrom, when every trans person resides firmly in the crosshairs of Trump's eliminationist agenda, is unconscionable, and unforgivable.

Look, I don't know how to tell people that my right to exist as my authentic self is not a bargaining chip to be traded with nazis who want me dead, in response to an Astroturfed moral panic, and the results of one election in which there's little evidence the Democratic Party was even *trying* to win, without making them feel defensive. The simple truth however is that if whether or not you're prepared to even pretend to fight for the idea that trans rights are human rights, in the middle of a fascist anti-trans pogrom that is now taking on the force of law, depends on what focus group polling says then you never believed trans rights were human rights at all.

Truthout

One of the most surreal things about living through the opening phases of a fascist anti-trans pogrom, is getting people around me who aren't trans, and aren't paying close attention to what's going on, to understand that I'm speaking literally. Historically, when an authoritarian state legally denies that a dehumanized, targeted people even exist, it's because they intend to take steps to ensure that they don't. More to the point however, you don't have to be a history student to hear what GOP politicians and fascist propagandists are already saying out loud; they've openly talked about erasing trans people from public life, run Congressional campaigns on promises to make being transgender illegal, and we've even caught their think tank groups having strategy sessions with Republican lawmakers where they confess the end game is using attacks on trans youth to make gender affirming care illegal for everyone. I am not exaggerating or speaking metaphorically when I say the Trump regime ran on, and is enacting a trans eliminationist agenda; even if establishment liberals in the media and politics aren't talking about it because they don't care, don't believe the fascists are serious about doing a pogrom against trans people, or don't think standing up for the human rights of trans people is politically popular.

Given that the other option is dying in silence as the test case scenario for stripping the human rights of everyone else the regime doesn't like however, a lot of trans people are speaking out about what is going on here, and why even cis people who are currently unaffected by the fascist right's crusade to wipe out trans people need to take this seriously and fight back to protect trans lives. In that vein, I'd like to share this twenty-six minute discussion between The Bitchuation Room's Francesca Fiorentini and Imara Jones of TransLash Media that focuses on the GOP's current legislative assault on trans existence, how cis people are being played by the fascists to justify their own oppression further down the line, and why the attacks on trans rights and trans identities acts a skeleton key for a larger authoritarian agenda.

I'm often leery of sharing stories like this because the point isn't, and cannot be, that anti-trans policies and the dehumanization of trans people in our society is bad, because it also affects cis people, particularly women, in horrifyingly negative ways. One of the primary reasons we've facing down a politically empowered fascist Trump regime, is that Americans as a society have already accepted the idea that some people don't matter, and aren't human enough for the full spectrum of human rights; even if the folks making those arguments rarely admit what they're actually arguing for in a big picture sense. As in the case of Muslims, migrants, student protestors and women who want to control their own bodies, our society's casual disregard for the human and civil rights of trans people has acted as a permission gate for the Trump regime's larger project to strip the rights of anyone they don't like, or who dares to speak out in dissent.

Despite my reservations about centering cis experiences when talking about the anti-trans pogrom however, the fact is that cis women *are* negatively affected by the war on trans existences in both a micro and macro sense; whether it's hate-fueled transinvestigators invading women's bathrooms to "protect women," or the way anti-trans propaganda serves as a stepping stone for larger patriarchal efforts to possess women's bodies, this is a very real consequence of a normalized anti-trans pogrom that dehumanizes, otherizes, and criminalizes trans people (particularly trans women.) Furthermore, as the story of Dani Davis, a Florida woman fired by Walmart for being tall enough to trigger abusive behavior from a raging transphobe, demonstrates - the reality is that a society that isn't prepared to stand up for the human rights of trans people, isn't likely to stand up for the human rights of women, or workers, either.

For more on that, let's turn to this short (14 minute) video by Mike Figueredo from THR:

The Humanist Report: Walmart Fires Cis Employee *BECAUSE* She Was Harassed by Transphobic Customer in Bathroom

"A Walmart employee named Dani Davis was accosted and threatened by a transphobic customer during her shift, and she was subsequently fired because of it. The customer followed her into the bathroom and accused her of being a man and yelled transphobic slurs at her. Days after she reported the incident to her supervisor, she was fired because she supposedly posed a “security risk” to others in the store. In this video we’ll talk about this disturbing story and discuss how transphobia harms ALL women; both trans and cis alike."

So, is the fascist's ongoing anti-trans pogrom still a "culture war distraction" when it's affecting education funding for the State of Maine - because their Governor won't ban trans women from school sports in deference to the Trump regime's stated quest to erase trans people from public life?

https://truthout.org/articles/usda-suspends-maine-education-funds-over-states-support-for-trans-athletes/

USDA Suspends Maine Education Funds Over State’s Support for Trans Athletes

"The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced Wednesday that it is suspending federal funding for select education programs in Maine, citing the state’s refusal to comply with President Donald Trump’s anti-trans directive to exclude transgender students from girls’ and women’s sports.

In a letter to Maine Gov. Janet Mills (D), Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins said the funding freeze would affect “certain administrative and technological functions in schools,” and warned that “[t]his is only the beginning.”

Rollins also noted that the USDA is reviewing Maine’s research and education-related funding to assess compliance with the U.S. Constitution, federal law, and the Trump administration’s anti-trans policy agenda. She specifically invoked Title IX — which the White House has weaponized against trans people — and Title VI, which the administration has distorted to go after diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts."

You might be tempted to scoff at this story because Department of Agriculture funding is a narrow application of force by the regime, to try and dictate Maine's compliance with Trump's executive order, but as the article notes this is part of a much larger attack on Maine's education funding to force the state's compliance with the regime's persecution of trans people via an executive order that is being challenged in court still. I have no idea if we even have laws or constitutional rights in this country anymore, but if SCOTUS doesn't want to play Calvinball, Trump's order is almost certainly unconstitutional and shouldn't survive legal challenges. Given the existence of a 6-3 fascist high SCOTUS that is quite happy to make up the law as it goes to support the Trump regime's agenda however, you'll forgive me if I don't have a lot of confidence in the courts to save trans folks, particularly trans women like me.

Speaking more broadly, I'm sharing this article to point out how shortsighted and utterly ineffective the liberal establishment's plan to stop talking about trans rights is, even in the face of an anti-trans pogrom, because they think doing so will win them elections that might not even happen or be fair at all. The fact is the anti-trans pogrom is a foundational plank in the Trump regime's larger fascist agenda; it doesn't matter if bougie lib politicians want to talk about it, they're going to make you folks either help them eliminate trans people, or talk about why the rights of trans people are human rights and must be protected. You don't get to opt out, they're pushing this agenda whether you want to talk about it or not.

As I mentioned in the post above, the Trump regime's war on the existence of trans people is clearly important enough to them ideologically and politically, to enact a series of punishments on the entire state of Maine, to cow their governor Janet Mills into submission. That's not just my interpretation as a trans woman, we literally just caught the acting Social Security Administration Commissioner admitting as much in writing:

https://www.commondreams.org/news/leland-dudek-resign

"The top Democrat on the U.S. House Oversight Committee on Wednesday led calls for the resignation of acting Social Security Administration Commissioner Leland Dudek following the revelation of internal emails confirming that the SSA canceled contracts with the state of Maine as political payback after Democratic Gov. Janet Mills publicly defied President Donald Trump in support of transgender student athletes.

The emails—which were obtained by House Oversight Committee Ranking Member Gerry Connolly (D-Va.)—show that Dudek ordered the cancellation of enumeration at birth and electronic death registration contracts with Maine, even though SSAd subordinates warned that such action "would result in improper payments and potential for identity theft."

Dudek—who is leading the SSA while the Senate considers Trump's nomination of financial services executive Frank Bisignano—replied to the staffer: "Please cancel the contracts. While our improper payments will go up, and fraudsters may compromise identities, no money will go from the public trust to a petulant child."

He was referring to Mills, who stood up to Trump in February after the president threatened to suspend federal funding for Maine unless the state banned transgender girls and women from participating on female scholastic sports teams."

I mean good on Connolly to call for Dudek's resignation, but are centrist party strategists even paying attention to what's going on here? I can't stress how degrading it is to keep having to remind powerful cis people who were happy to promote supporting trans rights as a brand eight years ago, that the fascist Trump regime's anti-trans pogrom is going to affect everyone who isn't a fascist negatively, not just trans people. But also, that's exactly what's happening, and even as we speak these same people point to opinion polling as an excuse for leaving trans people and their civil rights to the tender mercies of guys like Stephen fucking Miller.

In a move that demonstrates mainstream Democrat politicians have learned absolutely nothing from helping to build a fascist police state panopticon, and the migrant carceral complex, before shitting themselves so hard they lost to a would-be dictator like Trump, Massachusetts Dems have quietly passed a trans student sports ban timebomb and are trying to sell it as a victory for protecting trans rights:

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/massachusetts-house-dems-pass-bill

Massachusetts House Dems Pass Bill That Could Ban Trans Students From Sports; Senate Next

"On Wednesday, the Massachusetts House of Representatives passed a $1.3 billion budget bill that included a transgender sports ban—the first such measure to pass any legislative chamber in a blue state. Rather than voting to strike down the provision, Democrats advanced an amendment allowing the ban to go into effect only after its impacts are studied. Party leaders framed the move as a win for transgender rights, claiming the study would never materialize and the ban was effectively dead. But critics argue the provision puts transgender people at risk if political winds shift or future administrations decide to act on the study. Discussions suggest Democrats chose the procedural maneuver to shield members in swing districts from casting a vote in support of transgender rights."

Are you fucking kidding me? Let me see if I understand this correctly. In the middle of a state-sanctioned, anti-trans pogrom being conducted by fascists who have already declared that trans people don't exist, and openly admitted they're trying to drive trans people from public life, (two things that historically have preceded the direct extermination of marginalized groups), a solidly blue state government full of supposed "liberals" just passed an anti-trans law they promise not to actually enforce, because - they don't want to go on record standing up for the human rights of trans people as doing so is unpopular? Did I get that right? So the reason you decided to literally provide ideological support for an anti-trans pogrom is that you're cowards, and that makes it okay somehow? Quick question; if launching Chuck Schumer into the sun polled well, would you folks be afraid to oppose that on record too, or are you only cowards when we're talking about the human rights of trans people?

Look, if American liberals don't want me to point out that the war on trans rights (which aids a real as fuck anti-trans pogrom being conducted by the fascist right) is a bipartisan initiative, they need to start telling the political leaders they insist I *have* to vote for to stand up for trans people being targeted by a nazi moral panic with eliminationist characteristics; it's gotta be you folks, because it's clear as fucking day that the Democratic Party as a whole isn't listening to trans people like me.

Although it isn't making even the fringes of the mainstream discourse surrounding the fascist GOP's election-rigging SAVE Act, the reality is that unless nazis with an eliminationist agenda towards trans people make some sort of exception, the bill will likely disenfranchise every trans person in America who has legally changed their name, and quite possibly most people who are in the process of transition and thus have ID that may be inconsistent with their presentation or other documents:

https://truthout.org/articles/the-save-act-is-not-just-about-married-women-its-about-trans-people-too/

Federal Voter ID Bill Attacks Trans Voters — and Anyone Else Who Has Changed Their Name

"Much of the news coverage of the SAVE Act has focused almost entirely on the broad category of “married women” — a bloc of 69 million who may not have updated documents. But arguably, such a law is aimed directly at transgender people in addition to affecting married people who change their names. And that’s not to mention the 140 million U.S. citizens who don’t have passports and tens of millions who also don’t have easy access to a birth certificate. Regardless, the fact that trans people are at the center of this story has been easy to sideline: A story published by NPR last week listed eight things to know about this legislation — but didn’t mention the implications for trans people at all."

At this point can anyone who has been paying attention (a very small group indeed, as far as I can tell) claim to be surprised that trans-eliminationist nazis are trying to pass a law that further erases trans people from public life and social participation, yet most of American society hasn't even registered that as a potential consequence of this disastrous, anti-democratic bill? After all, when the president of the United States signed an executive order more or less saying that trans people didn't exist, which historically is a sure sign that a government intends to make that a reality, most Very Serious PeopleTM in our discourse shrugged and pointed to public polling as an excuse to not speak out to defend trans people. So why would this act of erasure and disenfranchisement be any different?

"Benfield is concerned that not naming trans people as a target of this legislation contributes to an insidious process that is ongoing: the erasure of trans people from public life in general.

“It’s going to affect lots of different kinds of people,” she said of the SAVE Act. “But the reason that the erasure of trans people worries me in this conversation is that it’s consistent with strategic erasure from the public sphere that’s already been happening.”

That strategic erasure includes President Donald Trump’s series of executive orders attacking so-called “gender ideology” and both state and national legislation that attempts to criminalize support for trans youth in physical and social transition. There are now only two genders — “male” and “female”— and anyone who falls outside of that could potentially face being pushed out of public life, including schools, sports, restroom facilities, and now voting itself. Even policies like Trump’s executive orders that aren’t immediately enforceable create a chilling effect, pushing trans people into the closet through intimidation."

I would hope that because it requires sixty votes in the Senate, the SAVE Act is a dead on arrival bill; but I can't say I'm all that confident in a Democratic Party that is openly blaming the results of an election they seemingly *tried* to lose on their (actually, nonexistent) support of trans rights, and its ability to protect people like me. Even if the SAVE Act is shot down however, the fact that this attempt at the mass disenfranchisement of trans people in American civic life doesn't even rate a talking point in this very public debate, strongly implies that when these bills only target trans people, the establishment "opposition" to the fascist agenda will continue to shrug, offer empty words of condolence, and simply let it happen; which is pretty much par for the course in the fascist Trump 2.0 era.

To say that living in a society where your rights and even your existence are not so much up for debate, but rather already judged to be either irrelevant, or non-existent, is surreal and unnerving, would be an understatement of massive proportions. I guess there is one upside here however, because if trans people can no longer vote, perhaps I'll finally be free of liberals who honestly don't give a rats ass about my life, screaming at me to support a Democratic Party that doesn't care whether I live or die, while pretending their party is a much better advocate for my right to exist, than they actually are.

The SAVE Act Is Not Just About “Married Women”— It’s About Trans People, Too

A bill passed by the House last week could disenfranchise millions, including most trans people, if it becomes law.

Truthout

I don't know how many times I have to tell cis-het people that we're in the middle of a real anti-trans pogrom, and when the state says you don't exist, they literally mean to make it so, but the fascist GOP is signaling their intentions to eliminate gender-affirming care, including adult care, entirely; which is literally how you go about ending trans people if you don't want to worry about messy arguments over civil or human rights:

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/the-trump-administration-threat-to

The Trump Administration Threat To Transgender Adult Care Is Growing At Lightning Speed

"It appears increasingly likely that the Trump administration is preparing to target transgender adult healthcare nationwide. In his campaign video, Trump stated he intends to investigate gender-affirming care for transgender people of any age. At the same time, reports indicate the Department of Health and Human Services is preparing to release a junk science review targeting both transgender youth and adults, with one internal letter referencing plans to study the “chemical and surgical mutilation of children and adults.” The warning signs for transgender adults are blaring: when Republican legislators say behind closed doors that their goal is to end gender-affirming care “for everyone,” and when figures like Michael Knowles call for the “eradication” of transgender people at CPAC, this is what it looks like when those words begin turning into action.

It would not take much for transgender adult care to be severely disrupted. The forthcoming HHS report could be used to justify a national executive order threatening hospital funding for any institution that treats transgender adults. Given the widespread over-compliance already seen in response to executive orders with no statutory authority—whether around DEI rollbacks, the erasure of LGBTQ+ people, censorship of AIDS/HIV prevention resources, removal of critical historical narratives, or retaliation against law firms that challenge the administration—such an order could have sweeping, chilling effects. The threat of investigations alone could freeze care for countless trans people, forcing providers to pause services out of fear. These disruptions are already underway in Arizona following Planned Parenthood’s decision to halt transgender care—an early indication of the nationwide consequences should the Trump administration continue its campaign against transgender people unchecked."

Frankly, I have to admit that trying to convince people around me that a fascist government literally means to end me and folks like me, is pretty disheartening. Plenty of trans people and legal observers warned you that Christian Nationalists had no intention of stopping with trans youth sports bans, and society at large simply shrugged; yet now we're already watching fascists pass laws that ban trans youth medical care, and bathroom ban bills that never got off the ground eight short years ago are all the rage. The fascist American right has openly admitted that they're trying to drive trans people out of public life, and we've caught them on tape admitting they want to criminalize being trans and ultimately, end the existence of trans people. The goddamn nazi President of the United States publicly acknowledged he wants to end all gender affirming care, even for adults, and on his very first day in office he issued an Executive Order officially declaring that there were only two "biological" genders and thus trans people don't exist. Now the larger fascist right seems poised to use anti-sterilization laws meant to protect marginalized people from eugenicist freaks, and federal funding mechanisms, to deny life-saving gender affirming care to everyone in America, regardless of age; so much for these anti-vax nazis' commitment to "bodily and medical" autonomy, right?

The truth is, if all of that is not enough to make cis-het people realize these nazis want to eliminate (by any means necessary) trans people, then I don't know how to make them realize it; or worse, I don't know how to make them care. The warning signs that this project is ultimately about eliminationism and possibly even genocide, have been there from the very beginning; and yet, cis-het people, even folks who call themselves liberals and were happy to chase clout supporting "trans rights" a mere 8 years ago, have simply ignored them; indeed, the Democratic Party has at times joined the nazis in justifying the persecution of trans people because defending trans rights is "unpopular" after a solid decade of unchecked otherizing, dehumanizing, and attempts to criminalize trans people in the public discourse.

And what have these wise and unconcerned heterosexuals won for their troubles? A fascist dictatorship run by Christian Nationalist freaks who rode to power, in part, on a drummed up moral panic about trans people just existing. I hope you folks are happy with your harvest; I probably won't live long enough to see the day *you* find out.

The Trump Administration Threat To Transgender Adult Care Is Growing At Lightning Speed

Many transgender adults have wondered when their care would be banned by the Trump administration. Now, we are seeing the first vectors to do so.

Erin In The Morning

The fascist right's war on trans existence is both opportunistic and ideological, and as such it is not bound by imaginary lines on a map. As this piece notes, the all-too-often bipartisan support of an anti-trans pogrom in both the US and Britain is having a distorting effect on Canadian politics as that country approaches its federal election.

https://xtramagazine.com/power/politics/right-obsesssion-trans-people-election-272578

We must be ready to counter the right’s obsession with trans people

"The 2025 Canadian federal election campaign is underway, and it arrives in a moment where it seems like conservative media and politicians just can’t get enough of trans people. They’re seemingly addicted to discourse about pronouns and bathroom access. They’re fixated on high school girls’ volleyball, gender markers on passports, puberty blocker prescriptions or even haircuts. They accuse their opponents of forcing “radical gender ideology” onto young people, as they strip away peoples’ rights to healthcare and self-identification.

The first part of this century saw progressive politicians campaign on expanding LGBTQ2S+ rights—see: Obama-era expansions to marriage equality or Canada-wide “X” gender markers—while their right-wing opponents largely remained silent. But the script has flipped. Now, Donald Trump has won an election on the back of campaign ads like “Kamala is for they/them” and turned questions about the very existence of trans people into a Day One executive order. We’ve seen bad science like the Cass Review in the U.K. guide public health policy in that country and beyond, and U.K. prime minister Keir Starmer campaign on restricting trans women from women’s spaces. Yes, the current anti-trans movement was born in the United Kingdom and United States, but make no mistake: it has found roots in Canada too.

Conservative Party of Canada leader Pierre Poilievre has embraced much of the anti-trans discourse from abroad. Last year, he spoke out against puberty blockers for young people and trans women in women’s spaces, arguing that “female spaces should be exclusively for females, not for ‘biological males.’” And this January, following Trump’s inauguration, he parroted the U.S. president’s stance about being aware of “only two genders.”

Reading this piece through the lens our present anti-trans context in America was difficult, because it reminded me of a time only years ago when the anti-trans pogrom and the fascist right's obsession with genitalia was still a marginal issue and our society, spurned on by an establishment that doesn't give a damn about trans people, missed a golden opportunity to stand up for trans rights and shove these weird nazi underpants police into the proverbial locker. Although I won't claim the Canadian ruling class cares any more for trans lives than the UK and US establishments do, it's very clear to me that the reason Canadian public figures in the fascist movement have to play a double game of admission and denial around the subject of trans rights is because the political establishment in Canada has at least made a stab at defending trans people's right to exist in society; with the exception of s few governments in fascist controlled areas. Indeed as recently as the fall of 2024, three "conservative" parties in Canada fought provincial elections on the back of anti-trans propaganda and all three of them lost.

This contrasts of course with the British and US experience, which has seen bipartisan support for anti-trans policies and the complete surrender of the mainstream "liberal" center on the issue of trans rights. This capitulation to fascist arguments about why trans people don't deserve the same medical and participatory rights as cis people do has in turn not only accelerated the anti-trans pogrom, but perversely allowed fascist political movements to win entire elections on the backs of drummed up moral panics about trans people. The Canadian example, so far, demonstrates that the only way forward that doesn't end in both trans eliminationist politics and victory for fascist political forces at the ballot box, is to fight back against the anti-trans narratives driving these moral panics. Which is probably a lesson we shouldn't have to learn from Canada in the US at least, because our fascists were losing elections fought on these subjects too until the liberal establishment decided to abandon trans people to our present fate.

Of course, I would strongly advise Canadians not to get too confident in their country's support for trans rights, precisely because of our American experience. If the rise of the anti-trans pogrom that helped put Trump in office did nothing else, it demonstrated that these freaks aren't going to just go away because they lost the debate on trans rights a few times; it takes constant vigilance and pushback to keep these nazis in the weirdo genital inspector box where they belong.

In between preparing American cops for martial law, and creating a fascist surveillance database of autistic Americans, the Trump regime is still finding time to aggressively prosecute its anti-trans pogrom and ultimately trans-eliminationist agenda. In what is undoubtedly a preparatory move for further assaults on trans existence in American life, the HHS department has released its own sham "anti-trans" study into youth gender affirming care that aligns completely with the sham UK "Cass Report" that is being used to strip trans rights in that country.

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/fact-check-trumps-hhs-review-on-trans

Fact Check: Trump's HHS Review On Trans Care Filled With Pseudoscience, Pushes Conversion Therapy

"On Thursday, May 1, the Trump administration’s Department of Health and Human Services, now helmed by Robert F. Kennedy Jr., released a report masquerading as science but serving as a blunt instrument of ideological warfare against transgender youth. Commissioned under Trump’s Jan. 28 executive order, the report’s conclusions were preordained, its framing designed to validate a political agenda rather than present credible research. It names no authors, has no peer-reviewed process, and bears no hallmarks of legitimate scientific inquiry—just a faceless document no one was willing to claim. Among its recommendations: conversion therapy for trans youth, the reclassification of social transition as medical treatment, and an absurd assertion that transgender care should be judged not by patient well-being or satisfaction but by “employability” and the presence of “romantic partners.”

At more than 400 pages, the document is poised to draw a wave of fact-checks and scientific rebuttals. The American Academy of Pediatrics has already issued a sharp condemnation, calling it “inaccurate,” “misleading,” and a distortion of “the current medical consensus.”

There is something entirely unnerving about feeling like you have to explain to cis society at large that a blatant piece of fascist anti-trans propaganda, which is what this HHS report is, is not a credible work of science, medical policy, or academic rigor. Medical associations and trans rights groups are already coming forward to point out this is junk science and propaganda written to achieve an objective, rather than solve a real problem. That objective is clearly the dehumanization and medicalization of trans existence, while ominously promoting literal fucking conversion therapy as acceptable medical practice to "treat" youth gender dysphoria.

Furthermore, given that the report seems to define trans "youth" as anyone under the age of 26, the regime's open threats against even adult trans medical care, and the decision to cloak this entire anti-trans agenda under the framework of anti-genital mutilation laws, it shouldn't take a degree in gender studies to figure out this report is going to be used to go after trans rights and the public existence of trans people of all ages; particularly given that the Cass Report it was modelled after has been used to accomplish some of those same goals in the UK. In fact I'm so certain that this report is the tip of the spear for an American state attack on trans existence as a whole, that I'm mostly sharing Erin Reed's debunking of its most egregious and appalling arguments for future reference, because I'm sure the regime itself is going to refer back to it early and often.

While I certainly recommend you read the entire piece, I'd like to highlight her notes on the conversion therapy issue; otherwise known as legalizing and normalizing "torturing the trans out of your kids."

"The review flounders when attempting to present viable alternatives to gender-affirming care—chief among them, psychotherapy. There is no comprehensive evidence that talk therapy alone can treat gender dysphoria. On the contrary, the documented harms of conversion therapy are extensive: LGBTQ+ youth subjected to it are more than 2.5 times as likely to report multiple suicide attempts in the past year. The report attempts to have it both ways—insisting that psychotherapy for gender dysphoria isn’t conversion therapy, while also suggesting, in the same breath, that conversion therapy (“psychotherapy” or “psychiatric care” in the report) might actually be effective in curing gender dysphoria."

Folks, I don't know how to say this any more clearly; gender ideology is a conspiracy theory, social contagion is a winger cope to explain away their trans children without acknowledging their kid's agency, and none of this is about protecting children. The Trump regime's Christian Nationalist agenda openly includes ending gender affirming care and driving trans people out of public life. Among the very first things Trump did when he got back in office is issue an executive order decreeing that trans people don't exist. These freaks are serious, and they're coming for trans people at pace.

In a ruling that simultaneously demonstrates that "the cruelty is the point" and "the American legal process is designed to work for the oppressor," the Supreme Court has granted the Trump administration an emergency stay of lower court orders blocking their unconstitutional and frankly eliminationist trans military ban; allowing the government to immediately begin discharging trans service members while lawsuits against the ban make their way through the courts.

https://www.advocate.com/news/scotus-allows-trans-military-ban

Supreme Court allows Trump administration to enforce transgender military ban

"LGBTQ+ advocates condemned the ruling. In a joint statement, Lambda Legal and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, which represent plaintiffs in the case, called the decision “a devastating blow to transgender servicemembers who have demonstrated their capabilities and commitment to our nation’s defense.” The groups argued the policy “has nothing to do with military readiness and everything to do with prejudice,” adding that the ban “violates constitutional guarantees of equal protection and will ultimately be struck down.”

The administration had sought an emergency stay from the Supreme Court after the Ninth Circuit denied a similar request on April 18. In their response brief last week, attorneys for the plaintiffs said the government’s request was based on a “shocking proposition that transgender people do not exist,” and argued the policy “fails under any level of review.” The brief emphasized that the active-duty plaintiffs have over 115 years of combined military service and over 70 commendations."

Alright, let me state up front that I remain a committed anti-imperialist, peace advocate, and anarcho-syndicalist. I am not for war, militarism, or gunning down brown kids in far away lands on behalf of American oil companies and calling yourself a hero afterwards. If I had my way, there would be no military for trans service members to be banned from. But this ruling isn't about banning military service for everyone, it's about banning military service for trans people specifically because the government has legally declared that trans people don't exist while simultaneously implying that being trans is a type of mental illness that makes folks unsuitable for employment by the Department of Defense. In that regard then, this ruling is a part of the Trump regime's ongoing anti-trans pogrom and the larger fascist right's open attempts to drive trans people out of American public life. There are real people here, who even if I strongly disagree with their career choices are being harmed for nothing more than their gender identity; the fact that this is happening in the US military with the support of a Christian Nationalist-friendly SCOTUS doesn't make it any different than if McDonald's were firing trans people because "they're too unstable to operate a fry cooker." This similarity is of course intentional, because anti-trans fascists don't want to just remove trans people from the military, they want *everyone* to stop employing trans people entirely; that's how a pogrom works.

All of which of course leaves us with the harms themselves, and the lawless, vindictive nature of the Trump regime's war on trans existence. The fact is it remains highly unlikely that the Trump trans military ban is going to ultimately survive the numerous legal challenges against it; and the six fascist or fascist-friendly judges sitting on SCOTUS know that. Unless they're prepared to effectively invent new law, the ban will ultimately be struck down; which begs the question of why they would allow the Trump regime to start enacting the ban in the meantime while the suits against it make their way through the courts? Particularly given that discharge will irreparably harm the careers of trans service members who are likely to successfully sue the government for doing so once the ban is ultimately overturned. The answer of course is that doing so will allow the regime to harm, purge, and demonize some trans people in the interim, and since all these folks would be for simply locking up or eliminating trans people if the law would allow it, they're happy to err on the side of destroying trans lives and careers to feed raw meat to the Christian Nationalist base this movement relies on for support.

With much of Democratic Party leadership playing dead and apparently hoping Trump dies from embarrassment after reading his polling numbers, there hasn't been a lot of political opposition to Trump's fascist regime to talk about. One noted exception however, has been Maine Governor Janet Mills and her refusal to cave to Trump's anti-trans pogrom on behalf of transgender athletes in the state's school system. Some of you may remember Mills from her contentious encounter with Downmarket Mussolini in the White House where the president threatened federal funding for Maine and tried to intimidate the Governor into enforcing his (unconstitutional) anti-trans executive order. Mills famously responded "I'll see you in court" and now she has; winning a decision to block the Trump administration's attempts to withhold federal funds for school lunches in the state unless Mills agrees to discriminate against trans kids.

For more details about this story, I'd like to share this fourteen minute video by Mike Figueredo of the Humanist Report. I picked this admittedly broad discussion because Mike does an excellent job of putting the Trump regime's actions in the proper context of authoritarianism and anti-trans discrimination, while effectively contrasting the activities to resist Trump in the Democratic Party, against the collaborators and surrender muppets who're consistently advising the Party to abandon vulnerable marginalized groups at the precise moment a fascist regime comes for those people.

One segment that really stood out to me is when Figueredo explained that estimates indicated there are as few as two transgender athletes playing high school sports in the entire state of Maine. This of course highlights the unfathomable malevolence of the Trump regime towards trans people, in that they would threaten a school lunch program that serves 170,000 students in the state among other threatened funding cuts, just to discriminate against two trans people; the fact that Mills is willing to fight for the human rights of two people in her entire state when the stakes are this high demonstrates her ability to rise to the moment in the fascist Trump 2.0 era. By contrast however, when Mike asks if anyone believes a guy like Gavin Newsom would make the same choice, I think anyone who is paying attention can agree the answer is no. By contrasting Mills' active resistance to Trump's ongoing war against her state, with the appeasement and collaboration agenda proposed by folks like Newsom, Rahm Emanuel, and Elissa Slotkin, Figueredo also illuminates the likely reason that the public doesn't feel like Democrats are doing enough to resist the Trump agenda, and the Party remains mired in terrible polling even as the Trump regime also craters in popularity.

It's a broad, electoral politics-focused discussion, and I don't want to blow sunshine up your butt about a single court ruling. But if we're going to rip the liberal establishment for collaborating with fascism, it makes sense to talk about what a realistic opposition to Trump's fascist agenda might look like. Nobody is throwing a ticker tape parade here, but a Democratic Party lead by folks like Mills, Van Hollen, Pritzker, Ocasio-Cortez, and Sanders all resisting the Trump regime is an asset to folks who don't like fascism; while one that insists on embracing Trump's fascist agenda and throwing marginalized people to the wolves, is not. It would be nice if for once, The Democratic Party's leadership class made the right choice.

As more information leaks out about how objectively horrifying the Big Billionaire Bill the GOP is ramming into law and hoping nobody notices it will kill their own voters actually is, it's becoming clear that the Act is also a way to prosecute the Trump regime's eliminationist agenda at the same time. We've already uncovered a GOP plot to defang judicial oversight over Trump's illegal and unconstitutional mass deportation campaign, and now observers have exposed another last minute change that would deny gender affirming care to, and likely cause the forced detransition of, hundreds of thousands of transgender Americans.

https://theintercept.com/2025/05/22/big-beautiful-bill-trans-medicaid-healthcare-minors-adults/

Republicans Launch Midnight Attack on Health Care Access for Trans Americans

"Late Wednesday, Congressional Republicans amended the bill to prohibit the use of Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care, potentially ripping healthcare access away from hundreds of thousands of transgender Americans.

An earlier version of the legislation targeted Medicaid funding for gender-affirming care for minors. In a midnight-hour maneuver, Republicans removed the word “minors” from that provision, prohibiting the use of Medicaid funding for “gender-transition procedures” for children as well as adults.

The legislation broadly defines “gender-transition procedures” as everything from surgery to hormone therapy. It needs only a simple majority to pass the Senate.

Experts on transgender health care said that if this provision advances, it could make an already-dire landscape for transgender care significantly worse. They described devastating consequences for the hundreds of thousands of transgender Americans who rely on Medicaid that will be further compounded by the roughly $700 billion in cuts to the health program in the GOP bill."

For the past three years, and in response to a dangerous shift in rhetoric and tactics by the fascist Pig Empire right, I've been trying to explain to cis het people that Trump and the GOP's anti-trans policies are unquestionably part of a larger anti-trans pogrom designed to eliminate or otherwise end by any means possible, the existence of trans people in America. The accuracy of that analysis was demonstrated on day 1 of Downmarket Mussolini's second term as President when Der Leader issued an executive order declaring there were only two legally recognized "biological sexes" in America; thereby decreeing that trans people effectively don't exist. This should have been a massive wake up call for cis people who don't want tens of thousands of dead trans people, particularly trans women, on their hands, because historically when a state says that you do not exist, it's because they mean to make it so.

Unfortunately, this warning, which was also supported by multiple leaked GOP and far right strategy sessions in which elected Republican politicians and think tank minions openly admitted their ultimate goal is ending trans care in American entirely, and Donald Trump's repeated public campaign promises to do the same, has largely gone unheeded; particularly by a Democrat establishment much more interested in blaming Harris's 2024 US election loss on her utterly nonexistent defense of trans rights. Well folks, we're here in the exact place I always told you would be arrive at, and my only question is "what now, wise centrists?"

The fact is this article doesn't even come close to properly articulating what a horrifying development this is for both trans people, and anyone who doesn't want to live under a fascist dictatorship where a reality TV show nazi President gets to decide who has a right to merely exist. The Republican Party knows full well that the US Constitution and international human rights law will make it extremely difficult to just round up trans people in concentration camps to force detransition them and start murdering folks, so they've settled on a subtler but no less homicidal strategy. The fascist right is thus working to eliminate gender affirming care for trans people entirely, while threatening anyone who employs or financially supports trans people to drive us out of the work force. These guys know all about the mental health problems and suicide rate increases brought on by untreated gender dysphoria, community isolation, and poverty; in fact, they're counting on it to allow them to wipe out trans people without getting any blood directly on their hands as they let "nature take its course."

Of course, I expect this warning to once again fall on the deaf ears of Very Serious People TM in the American liberal establishment, where transphobia runs almost as rampant as it does inside GOP war rooms. Who cares if labor class trans people die without gender affirming care when the point here is to signal to suburban white crackers who will never vote for you that you're just as anti-trans as the Pork Reich, right?

The Intercept

I've written a lot about how demeaning and demoralizing it is to have to defend my existence as a trans woman against nazi conspiracy theories, pseudoscience, and dehumanizing medicalization arguments in the broader discourse of a public that often doesn't know very much about trans people, but should by now be aware that the "side" in the "trans debate" that's full of nazi abuser fundamentalists does not give a fuck about science or "the children" and they just hate queer people for existing. I'm also leery about the way stories like this one can function to make trans existence merely a pleasant schadenfreude moment for a liberal establishment that has by and large, done little to protect trans people from an active anti-trans pogrom.

With all that noted however, there clearly are still a lot of people swayed by scientific-sounding anti-trans propaganda, so let's take a look at how that worked out when Utah Republicans commissioned an independent study on trans youth care to justify their already ongoing anti-trans legislation.

https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2025/05/utah-transgender-youth-affirming-care-ban/

Utah Study on Trans Youth Care Extremely Inconvenient for Politicians Who Ordered It

"Now, more than two years later, that review is here, and its conclusions unambiguously support gender-affirming medical care for trans youth. “The conventional wisdom among non-experts has long been that there are limited data” on gender-affirming pediatric care, the authors wrote. “However, results from our exhaustive literature searches have lead us to the opposite conclusion.”

The medical evidence review, published on Wednesday, was compiled over a two-year period by the Drug Regimen Review Center at the University of Utah. Unlike the federal government’s recent report on the same subject, which was produced in three months and criticized gender-affirming pediatric treatments, the names of the Utah report’s contributors are actually disclosed on the more than thousand-page document."

Look, if libs want to snark about the dripping GOP hypocrisy exposed by this story, who am I to stop them? As a trans woman however, I need folks to *also* understand the broader context this story is occurring in and what it means about the entire anti-trans pogrom being conducted all over the United States and much of the Pig Empire. The study conduced by the Drug Regimen Review Center at the University of Utah was completely unambiguous. There's actually a lot of peer-reviewed scientific literature about youth gender affirming care, the medical outcomes of that care are overwhelmingly positive, and receiving gender affirming care at an earlier age actively reduces mental health issues and risk of suicide among the trans population. So the medically documented truth is quite literally the exact fucking opposite of the arguments Utah Republicans used to block youth gender affirming care, including medically reversible puberty blockers.

Furthermore, this story does not exist in a vacuum. Time and time again the supposed "scientific" or "medical" arguments presented to justify denying gender affirming care for trans people, youth or otherwise, do not survive the barest degree of qualified scrutiny and directly contradicts the actual medical and scientific research about trans people. The studies anti-trans bigots present are doctored, do not survive peer review, must frequently be retracted, or like the UK's Cass Review and America's HHS Review On Trans Care are purely political documents rejected by scientific, medical, and academic authorities broadly. If the people behind the anti-trans pogrom do actually allow an independent study to be commissioned, as in this case, it too invariably rejects the bigoted nonsense and pseudoscientific arguments that buttress anti-trans laws.

Despite this, the broader US establishment continues to accept the arguments of clearly deceptive, openly bigoted anti-trans activists and politicians at face value, as if despite all their previously exposed lies, the bigots might this time have some factual basis for their arguments against trans existence. Just a couple weeks ago the Washington Post editorial board published an op-ed that more or less endorsed crackpot RJK Jr's trans care review even though it's been broadly rejected by virtually every medical body that knows anything about trans people, and the goddamn report advocates for fucking conversion therapy rather than gender affirming care to treat gender dysphoria. All of which is occurring against a backdrop of Democrats blaming trans people for their election loss, refusing to effectively oppose the GOP's anti-trans pogrom, and periodically even lending ideological support to that pogrom.

So by all means, have a chuckle at Utah Republican's expense; but I am begging you not to forget what this report proves about trans youth and trans existence in general, the next time some fundie fascist tells you trans people existing is a danger to children and broader American society.

Mother Jones

Unfortunately, some recent interactions with well meaning cis-het people have lead me to believe that the reality of just how far mainstream, ostensibly anti-Trump figures in our media and political discourse are going to effectively aid the fascist anti-trans pogrom in progress today. I assume this is the result of a lack of knowledge, because the alternative is a lot more unflattering for all parties involved in these conversations. Okay, fair enough; obviously we have to spend more time talking about these egregious betrayals of human and civil rights by influential self-identified liberal institutions, when those targeted happen to be trans.

Let's start with the nationally-read "liberal" paper of distinction in the city that sits at the heart of the US federal government: the Washington Post. We've previously talked about HHS Secretary RFK Jr's sham review on trans care report that among many other horrors, embraced fascist pseudoscientific theories about trans people and promoted conversion therapy (also known as torturing the trans out of people) as a treatment for gender dysphoria; if you want to know more about why the entire report is anti-trans, eliminationist garbage you can find that post up in this thread. The short story here is that the HHS review is objectively an attack on trans existence in America, and is being widely rejected by pretty much every scientific or medical body that has cared to comment on it.

All of which apparently wasn't enough for the Washington Post to come out on the right side of this issue; in a May 11th, 2025 Op-Ed, the paper's editorial board fully embraced the report, and with it the harmful anti-trans propaganda and pseudoscience it was built on.

https://www.erininthemorning.com/p/washington-post-shamefully-endorses

Washington Post Shamefully Endorses RFK Jr's Pseudoscience Report On Trans People

"The Washington Post editorial board describes the HHS report—laden with disinformation and distortions about transgender care—as “careful” and “thorough.” While the op-ed concedes that the report was born out of executive orders that deny transgender people even exist, it fails to grapple with the obvious: the report was constructed to reach a predetermined conclusion. There is no world in which the study’s authors could have released any report affirming transgender healthcare’s importance, given the executive order that made it possible and those in charge of selecting the authors, whose names were kept anonymous. The editorial calls for “neutral, unbiased studies” on transgender health care, yet in the same breath treats a 400-page screed—designed explicitly to justify banning that care—as if it meets that standard. The contradiction is as glaring as it is dangerous.

Almost none of the content from the HHS report actually makes it into the Washington Post editorial. The piece largely ignores the avalanche of criticism from scientists, medical experts, and transgender people over the report’s glaring falsehoods. Nowhere in the editorial will readers learn that the report endorses thoroughly discredited theories like “rapid onset gender dysphoria” and “social contagion” to explain trans identity. It deadnames some of the earliest known transgender patients—seemingly out of spite—and classifies social transition, something as simple as a haircut and a new name, as a medical intervention requiring regulation. It leans heavily on fringe, debunked studies and repeatedly cites known anti-trans ideologues like Jesse Singal, Ray Blanchard, Paul Hruz, James Cantor, Michael Laidlaw, and Quinten Van Meter—figures courts and experts have ruled unqualified to speak on transgender health care. None of this, nor the hundreds of factual distortions and pseudoscientific claims littering the report, are addressed in the Post’s editorial."

I confess that I don't share Erin Reed's excellent journalism and analysis as often as I wish I could; the remarkable legwork she puts in to laying out and proving an argument is the same thing that often renders my additional commentary redundant. This article for example lays out an airtight case that for whatever reasons (latent transphobia, in my opinion) the WaPo editorial team has gone out of its way to embrace fascist pseudoscience that justifies harming trans Americans, in complete violation of their stated principles and how they've treated similar ideological junk science positions forwarded by RFK Jr, the HHS, and the Trump regime in general. I fully endorse every word of this piece and strongly encourage you to simply read all of it.

Finally I would like to remind all the well-meaning, trans-embracing liberals in my life and online, that I'm not saying you or even the vast majority of liberals in America hate trans people; it may rather be the opposite. But the traditional pillars of the liberal establishment *are* actively abandoning trans folks to our fate, in the face of a fascist GOP pogrom.

Erin In The Morning

In the wake of several appalling decisions handed down by the US Supreme Court, I have begun describing the current American political environment as "an executive branch dictatorship with theocratic characteristics." I'm working on an article about the Roberts Court and their enabling of that executive branch dictatorship, so in the meantime let's talk about those "theocratic characteristics" as exemplified by *another* SCOTUS ruling that's an epic disaster for folks who believe in public education and aren't Christian Nationalists. Although it didn't receive nearly as much attention as granting Trump the right to ignore the US Constitution in real time, the reality is that the 6-3 fascist majority also delivered a ruling under the guise of supporting parental religious rights, that will almost certainly act as a de facto ban on teaching LGBTQ material in schools, and is indeed likely to reach much further into our educational system on behalf of people who believe Jesus was white and dinosaurs might be hoax.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/jun/27/supreme-court-lgbt-book-ban-case-ruling

US supreme court rules schools must let kids opt out of LGBTQ+ book readings

"In the ruling, the conservative justice Samuel Alito wrote: “We have long recognized the rights of parents to direct ‘the religious upbringing’ of their children. And we have held that those rights are violated by government policies that substantially interfere with the religious development of children.”

At the end of Alito’s judgment, the ruling stated: “Until all appellate review in this case is completed, the [school] board should be ordered to notify [parents] in advance whenever one of the books in question or any other similar book is to be used in any way and to allow them to have their children excused from that instruction.”

Folks, I'm just spit-balling here but perhaps we should stop putting legislative and judicial power in the hands of people who believe a man in the sky who curiously shares all their bigoted beliefs is directly speaking to them and telling them to purge queer people from American life? Just a thought.

Snark aside, this is precisely the kind of concern-trolling "parental rights" Trojan Horse the religious right intends to use to dismantle public education and force fascist indoctrination by default, on American children. Faced with a diverse, hand-picked group of religious parents who don't want their children to even know identities other than cis het fascist exist, the Court ruled along entirely partisan lines, that "schools must give children the chance to opt out on faith grounds from listening to storybooks being read out loud that feature gay and transgender characters." Given that in the year 2025 I probably shouldn't have to explain why "treating the knowledge that queer people exist as if it were pornography your children must be protected from is deeply homophobic," let's talk a little bit about why this seemingly narrow decision is likely to have a huge and objectively terrible impact, on American educational life.

The first thing you need to understand is that the American public school system is horrifically underfunded, and as a whole controversy-adverse. In theory, all the SCOTUS judges have ruled here is that schools have to provide advance warning to parents that materials acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ+ people are going to be taught, and allow them to opt their child out of being exposed to objectionable ideas like "queer people are human beings just like you." In practice however, this is just going to be a straight ban on LGBTQ+ material being taught in public schools because the solution of separating out into two classes is expensive and unworkable for educators who are legally obliged to provide supervision and educational programming for the religious opt-out students simultaneously. Nobody has the time, or money, to deal with a problem like that in our current anti-educator political environment and as someone quite familiar with education system bureaucracy, I can assure you that the majority of school boards are simply going to ban anything even remotely related to the existence of LGBTQ+ people.

This is of course a huge win for fash-friendly fundamentalists, but I would caution cis-het people who believe this is purely a queer community issue to consider for a moment, just how many highly-politicized things in American life politically-empowered Christian Nationalists consider "against their religion." After all, if parents can opt their kids out of even knowing LGBTQ+ people exist because "God," what's to stop them from demanding an opt-out to avoid their kids learning about evolution, women's suffrage, or say the dark history of American chattel slavery? And why would broke and terrified schoolboards have any more money to provide two separate classes during those lessons?

Buckle up folks; this ride is about to get even bumpier than it already is.

The Guardian

As we discussed in a recent post about Gestapo raids targeting undocumented sex workers, the consequences of fascist oppression on a targeted group have historically fallen hardest on, and compounded for people in that group who also exist under multiple layers of marginalization in our society. For example, in a white supremacist patriarchal state currently conducting an ethnic-cleansing operation, and an anti-trans pogrom, undocumented trans people are going to be subject to the state-sanctioned oppression and terrorization applied to both migrants, and trans people, as well as compounding forms of oppression unique to the trans migrant experience.

Furthermore, because this marginalization serves to mark out worthy and unworthy victims of various forms of oppression, a situation compounded by the fascist agenda of the Trump regime, this more extreme (and potentially fatal) targeting may occur entirely apart from the more visible and commonplace attacks on the larger targeted group. In short, multiple vectors of marginalization tend to create "forgotten people" its easier to get rid of amid a larger, extremely unpopular fascist political program careening towards eliminationism at speed.

All of which is why I think its extremely alarming that the Gestapo stopped keeping track of the number of transgender migrants they're locking up back in February; despite a Congressional mandate ordering the Gestapo to report the number of trans and other vulnerable people detained in immigration facilities.

https://theintercept.com/2025/07/11/ice-transgender-immigrants-data-trump/

Trans People Have Disappeared From ICE Records, Against Congressional Orders

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement quietly stopped reporting how many transgender people it keeps locked up in February, as the total population of immigrants in detention soared and the agency rescinded protections for trans people.

The move follows Trump’s executive order in January to essentially stop recognizing that trans people exist. According to the nonprofit Vera Institute of Justice, it appears to run afoul of a congressional mandate to report how many transgender and other vulnerable people are being kept in immigration detention."

As this article implies, context is crucial here as this decision to cease tracking trans inmates in the migrant carceral complex, comes at the same time the Trump regime is arguing that trans people don't exist, working to deny trans medical care nationally, and erasing evidence of trans people from public life and official government websites. Please remember this is a regime that already had to be taken to court multiple times to force them to stop housing trans woman inmates with male prisoners in the regular carceral system, despite clear and unambiguous evidence that doing so exposed trans inmates to discrimination, violence, and sexual assault. It seems likely then that due to the more lax oversight of immigration detention facilities and the operations of ICE in general, they are almost certainly replicating that same pattern of behavior with undocumented trans migrants in the ICE gulag system.

Although the number of trans inmates in ICE jails is not likely to be high, it has certainly risen in much the same way detained migrants overall have risen since the Trumpenreich stepped up its ethnonationalist, ethnic-cleansing operation under the banner of "mass deportations," but we have no way of knowing, or even being sure trans migrants inside the system are still alive, because the Gestapo is intentionally no longer tracking trans inmates in the system. This should be a problem for a US Congress that ordered them to do so going forward back in 2021, but given the GOP's control of government, as well as their fundie fascist support for the anti-trans pogrom going on in our society, I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for them to do something about it.

Of course, just because the fascists want to end trans people in US life, doesn't mean they aren't also cracker supremacists trying to deport their way to an ethnostate. As Bridget Crawford from Immigration Equality notes, the nature of trans marginalization globally often means that undocumented trans migrants have excellent asylum claims once they do arrive in the US.

"The broader context is quite alarming, especially because the vast majority of our clients have very, very strong asylum claims,” Crawford said. “The vast, overwhelming majority have experienced very high levels of abuse, sexual assault, often torture before they come to the United States.”

As I've said before, when an openly fascist government says you don't exist, and takes efforts to erase records that prove you do, it's usually because they have designs on making that a reality. The triumph of cruelty in America, the entire fascist program, now hinges on getting you to accept that some people aren't worth protecting. If you let them disappear trans migrants now, don't be surprised when the knock on the door comes for you in due time.

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

Didn't SCOTUS declare “their“ POTUS above the law as long as whatever he does pleases the KKK SCOTUS majority? Couldn't they somehow overrule whatever lower courts might still regard as lawful? They've done that ever since the fascists of the bunch got the overwhelming majority, so I wouldn't rule out that it lasts until the pogroms will “lawfully“ continue - as they did in fucking fascist nazi Germany.

Not much resistance either, press seems thankful for the show... /o\

@GNUmatic I dunno; the last couple of times this sort of thing has come up, they can't get to five votes. And the way Trump's immunity works is that he can't be criminally charged for "official acts" - it's a personal thing, not a right for the STATE to violate the constitution.

That having been said, they struck down Roe for wholly made up reasons not based on the law at all, so anything, literally anything, IS possible.

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

That's what I'm trying to convey, yes. Peculiarities aside, it's fascists, so in a nutshell:

Their law. Their order. No limits.

I guess the sooner we treat it as worst case, the better. I mean - they've spent decades of preparation pushing back. They can't let it slip, can they. They know what their fate would be, don't they. Dark place, but I guess that's where we are. Sooner, rather than later. /o\

@EndicottAuthor Thank you for this vital information; I absolutely did not realize any of that. In fact, I didn't read the article I just linked, heavily quoted from, and expanded on - could you read it for me and summarize here in the comments?
@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes @lisamelton oh hah, i always assumed getting *trans* people off the rolls was the primary purpose of that bill, and also wiping out the votes of most married women was just collateral damage they didn't mind…
@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes
Can we all just admit that the answer at the end of the national anthem is a firm "no."
@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes I'm in a MA district, and folks in my community are contacting state senators to express opposition to both the anti-trans legislation and the analyze-and-expire approach. Here's a response from one of the senator's offices...
"An amendment to study the issue is really a way to kill the original amendment. The period to study the issue runs out at the end of the year. There is no vehicle to allocate resources to actually study it. This approach is often used to kill amendments. The senator recognizes the importance of the issue and would never vote for something like this. The person who proposed the original amendment will doubtless keep doing it, and we will continue to find ways to kill it whenever it comes up."
@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes Better than capitulation, but not particularly reassuring. Hopefully we'll do better.

@hwebb No offense but I kinda feel like you didn't read the article right? Since Erin did get a comment on why it was done that way and it doesn't match what your Senator is saying:

"New information emerged late Thursday night during discussions with Democratic Representative Mike Connolly, who was pressed on the lack of a vote to strike the sports ban. Connolly initially stated that taking such a vote “would not have advanced the interests of trans people,” and noted that Democrats did not want to proceed without “coordinating strategy with swing district Reps,” suggesting the decision to pass the sports ban language was made to protect vulnerable Democrats. When pressed further, Connolly revealed that the amendment did not receive a vote because of concerns about taking a vote “where the final tally — and the implications of that tally — are unknown,” implying that Democrats may have supported the sports ban outright had it come to a vote."

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes I'm going to forward that to the senator. Thanks!

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

Mainer here, this is true. Resisting online and on the ground.

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes does it "cost" the regime anything to do things like this? I think it can be both ideological and an effective distraction from the higher cost efforts. I don't want to minimize the impact of anything here, but I'm sure if Project 2025 is forced to choose between "continued and accelerated redistribution of wealth upward" and "destroying trans populations", they'd choose watered down health care reform just like we did. I mean, who needs a livable environment?

@AnarchoNinaAnalyzes

This is why I HATE so-called progressives that say we need to focus on class solidarity rather than 'identity politics'.
