Yes, we know: #RSS isn't exactly cutting edge. 🙂

However, in a world of social media noise and click bait, promoting tried-and-true web services can be smart and innovative, too. 😎

So here's a collection of #DW feeds you can directly tap into via your favorite traditional #news aggregator:

Deutsche Welle
@dw_innovation Well, for me it is still cutting edge, because it is mostly exactly what I need. 😉

@dw_innovation well RSS is on point.

Exactly what is needed, no additional bullshit.

@dw_innovation und mit dieser Möglichkeit könnte #DW in 0,nix einige Accounts im #Fediverse starten

Könnt Ihr da nicht mal mit Euren Kolleg.innen reden?

@Aakerbeere Machen wir.
@dw_innovation endlich mal gute Nachrichten!
@dw_innovation I love rss and use your feeds - thank you for providing news that way.
@dw_innovation and that way I found out that my browser has an internal feed reader. How cool is that?
@dw_innovation Email, ActivityPub and RSS are the only protocols that give you a direct channel to your audience. 👍
@kaffeeringe @dw_innovation
…and http(s) 😎
@rufposten @dw_innovation How do you send via https? People have to actively pick it up and you usually have to rely on search engines to do this. Most people don't even recognise the address bar or bookmarks any more. They type ‘Deutsche Welle’ into the search and Google then does what suits their business best with this query.
@dw_innovation I like RSS in general, but once you're subscribed to a couple of prolific resources, you open your reader once a day and see 100+ posts. That's tough.

@dw_innovation ♥️

That's the way to go!

And here's how to turn #Mastodon into an #RSS reader:

https://rss-parrot.net

RSS Parrot

Home of RSS Parrot, a free Fediverse service that lets you turn Mastodon into an RSS or Atom feed reader.

@dw_innovation Yes, for some reason things that actually work are nowadays all out of fashion. So big thumbs up for doing this old-fashioned stuff!
@dw_innovation
Why don't we talk/use atom more?

@dw_innovation the timestamps in your feeds might be broken, Simple RSS Widget on Android isn't finding them.

Ah just realised it's not RSS it's RDF which is why it's not being parsed by the RSS reader.

@dw_innovation Cutting edge is not a value in and by itself. I applaud everyone who offers RSS feeds and consider them time-proven.
@eikelang @dw_innovation And then there are sites like @ZDF und GIGA.de do have RSS-Feeds but don't link to them anymore since their redesigns. CC: @severinpick
@dw_innovation ActivityPub would be RSS that comments back.
@dw_innovation Thank you for the list, but I was wondering whether there are also RSS feeds for the various language versions, i. e. DW in French, Croatian etc. etc.

@dw_innovation

#RSS is quite adequate and without all the noise!

@dw_innovation No RSS for the Russian service?
🤔
@dw_innovation I love RSS - it's an open standard that does what it should do well - why does DW not use a tool (like RSS parrot) to make each DW RSS a mastodon account - https://fedi.tips/following-mastodon-and-fediverse-accounts-through-rss/

@dw_innovation I love it when websites provide a rss option.
@dw_innovation
Netanyahu government 'morality' is NOT world morality. Pray it never is.

@dw_innovation
Many countries have a channel in English language. #DW is the German channel, #France24 is the French one, #TRTWorld is the Turkish one, etc.

Their usual standards are to give reliable news (verified). But aggregates of verified information can lead to misinformation and influence ... sometimes for the worst.
(see #FranceInfo channel example, autotranslate)

-> Do you have any example of this kind for Deutsche Welle (DW), and how would you rate DW ?

@dw_innovation

RSS is great! Don't be ashamed of it, it's a good way of reading news!

@dw_innovation I guess #jsonld with #schemaorg should also work as Kind of an RSS API. as alternative . Anyone tried that yet?
@dw_innovation Don’t talk down RSS! It’s a superior technology to most crap Silicon Valley has churned out lately
@dw_innovation RSS is great technology and it was murdered by collusion between Google and Facebook. We *can* have nice things but only if we reject the services of Putin/Trump's IT department.

@dw_innovation
RSS is the solution many people don't know they need.¹ There are lots of sources I would not consume if they'd not provide an RSS feed.

And one can build stuff on top.

Oh, and you can follow any Mastodon account via rss too (just try https://social.tchncs.de/@Lapizistik.rss ).

__
¹technically one could argue that pull vs push creates overhead but that's not the point here

@dw_innovation "Cutting edge" is a convenient shorthand for the precise, but time-consuming, phrase "not particularly reliable technology".

@dw_innovation Most of the internet relies on a pyramid of technologies that arent "cutting edge"

And the things that claim to be "cutting edge" are often people misunderstanding a technology & then misapplying it

Like how people seem to think blockchains, or LLMs are solutions to problems that never existed, or incorrect application creating a myriad of new problems b/c lack of fundamental understanding

The cherry on-top is the people competent enough to properly apply tech don't get funding

@ekis @dw_innovation

It's been a while since there has been a "cutting edge" worth cutting oneself on tbh, at least on a large general-public visible scale.

@ainmosni @dw_innovation absolutely, the problem is the tech industry, especially the one in California, heavily relies on not the product, but fantasies of what a technology could potentially provide
& since those projects where you rely on fantasy have higher upside, they get all the funding

This goes for everything from the robot vacuum to all the various misapplications of LLMs or blockchains (& of course, we could both likely keep listing other examples, but its not really worth doing so)

@ekis @dw_innovation

Yep, although I would say that blockchain marks the occasion where SV itself became subconsciously aware that they were out of actually useful ideas and began pushing stuff that really, absolutely, nobody really wants.

@dw_innovation Does #DW have an official mastodon account for its news posts? I have done searches and there are various RSS bots but I was hoping to find one directly under your control.
@dw_innovation I'm using RSS to keep track of Youtube subscriptions. And watch them without account. Because I don't have or use Google account anymore.
@dw_innovation more news sites should use rss. its way more comfy to read than inside social media. so thank you
@dw_innovation Email is not cutting edge. TCPIP is not cutting edge. Ethernet is not cutting edge, although a couple of the latest protocols might be. Walking is friggin' ancient! You know what? There's no reason not to keep doing something that works better than the alternatives. RSS just works better.

@dw_innovation

"RSS is not cutting edge"? 😆

How can creating my own personal newspaper, delivered regularly straight to my inbox, without opening a browser, exactly when I want it, without needing any accounts, passwords or emails, not be cutting edge?!

#RSS is state-of-the-art 😜

@dw_innovation It’s a good start. Now publish the rest of the articles in the feed too and not just a title and description.
@dw_innovation but could you please make them deliver full text? I subscribe to the ES ones and would love to be able to read the actual news offline too instead of just the headlines!
@dw_innovation using https://feedsin.space you can easily convert these RSS feeds into mastodon accounts
